Malcolm criticises you for commenting on ‘superfluous’ things like a companion’s fashion sense. He fails to see that a person’s character can be read through such clues.

The digital version of that is what companies like Cambridge Analytica do. They see who your friends are, what Facebook posts you liked and what they liked, and many other variables. They look at a lot of such data points and build a pretty accurate picture of who you are.

They manage this BECAUSE there is real information about you in the posts you choose to like, who your friends are, etc.

Our brains do the same subconsciously. We judge based on dress, manner of speech, choice of companions, etc. There is REAL information in these, whether people like the idea or not.
