There's a saying “Isma’ bilfors, emmen jekk trid”. This applies to the whole spectrum of politicians, influential contributors and the Church amongst others.

Bajd U Laham, Fenech Adami believes in liberty and his opinion is that the Catholic Church did not use that liberty to express its opinion. You were free to listen and free to decide.

If the divorce campaign was extended by another week we would have had another four groups on each side of the issue. Xi dwejjaq.

At times these soap-box speakers who preached in favour of one side or the other, did more damage to their cause.

In reply to Bajd u laham.

"Fact: Malta's liberals vote PN"

I'd rather say 'voted' PN . Come 2013 the state of affairs could possibly and will probably change. True liberals (not the would-be’s and wannabe’s) who previously voted PN could become hesitant to do the same this time round.

They might think - and rightly so, might I add - that given that the PN opposed divorce and has put a lot of stumbling blocks in the introduction of such a mundane civil right, the chances are that they (the PN) may even do worse, in the event of a possible future bill on, say, gay marriage and or assisted euthanasia.

[Daphne - Please look at the whole picture. It's important when you analyse situations. So, let's start out by saying that we vote PN. So we won't do so next time because they'll object to gay marriage (where did you get the assisted suicide from, when not even the world's most liberal democracies allow it?). We look at the alternative government: Labour, even more conservative about these things than the Nationalists are (the Nationalists promote gay people as their public face and are about to legislate for cohabitation rights for gay couples). Where does that leave us? Political parties exist only in response to their electors. They are a reflection of those electors. When they are not, they are in trouble, as the PN is discovering now with this referendum result. The Labour Party must contend with an electorate (its own) that voted against EU membership, is racist and xenophobic, and stayed at home rather than follow the party directive to vote for divorce. What do you think the reaction to gay marriage among Labour supporters is going to be?]

Not to mention the fact that most of these liberals might have been offended irreparably by the PN’s official position on divorce, the hidden dirty tricks they used during the campaign, their ambiguous relationship with the church, or the disgustingly, patronising comments recently left by some of its members.

[Daphne - Absolutely, and if the PN has any strategic sense it will respond and make changes immediately. The prime minister has to do the same with his cabinet, which is currently made up entirely (with the exception of Mario de Marco) of representatives of its core conservative vote, while the liberal vote that returns it to power every time remains completely unrepresented.]
