What a nerve

So now the Labour Party “listens to everyone without dictating” and is “the home of liberal-minded people”.

Unbelievable.

But then this is the same man speaking who has reinvented himself as an A1 European after campaigning very assiduously and publicly for people to vote No in the referendum on EU membership.

Does brown foundation adhere to brass neck?

“People have a choice between a confessional party that expected to dictate matters to the people and the Labour Party that listened to everyone without dictating. The Labour Party is the home of liberal-minded people.” – Joseph Muscat, yesterday

Meanwhile, seeking to heighten the drama, Malta Today’s is running right now with the headline news that ‘Gonzi has summoned his cabinet this morning’ because of the divorce referendum result.

Is it possible they don’t know that the cabinet meets every Monday morning and has done so for yonks? Maybe they’re just being deceitful.

  3. Bajd u laham says:

If the PL is not a home for liberal-minded people, what makes the PN then, an underground bunker for the likes of confessionalists, religious fundamentalists and inquisitors?

Speaking of confessionalists, what do you make of Fenech Adami’s latest comments where he said that the Church could have done much more than it did and been more vocal throughout the campaign?

The same man who, at the Granaries, used to shout in our face the words xoghol, gustizzja u LIBERTA (you got that right, LIBERTA), has the cheek to tell us that the Church did not put enough effort into trying to stop the introduction of divorce. I suppose he expected the Church to resort to Interdict-like persecution tactics, like, possibly, the burying of YES voters in landfills. Mur gibu konna ha ndahlu l-ewtanasja xkien jghid. Ma x’biza ta nies. But he doesn’t dye his hair, so he’s ok.

[Daphne – Read my post tomorrow. It’s about how THE NUMBERS, i.e. THE FACTS which emerged from this referendum show that it is in fact the Nationalist Party which is a coalition of liberals with those who are more conservative. Fact: Malta’s liberals vote PN. How conservatives vote does not change this fact. On conservatism: both Labour and PN have a preponderance of conservative politicians. This is a reflection of the fact that Maltese electors are predominantly conservative, whether they vote PN or MLP, a vote that is generally made on tradition rather than political philosophy. If you wish to get a true picture of the situation, rather than merely give vent to your prejudices, look at the numbers with a cold, clear mind.]

      “Fact: Malta’s liberals vote PN”

I’d rather say ‘voted’ PN . Come 2013 the state of affairs could possibly and will probably change. True liberals (not the would-be’s and wannabe’s) who previously voted PN could become hesitant to do the same this time round.

They might think – and rightly so, might I add – that given that the PN opposed divorce and has put a lot of stumbling blocks in the introduction of such a mundane civil right, the chances are that they (the PN) may even do worse, in the event of a possible future bill on, say, gay marriage and or assisted euthanasia.

[Daphne – Please look at the whole picture. It’s important when you analyse situations. So, let’s start out by saying that we vote PN. So we won’t do so next time because they’ll object to gay marriage (where did you get the assisted suicide from, when not even the world’s most liberal democracies allow it?). We look at the alternative government: Labour, even more conservative about these things than the Nationalists are (the Nationalists promote gay people as their public face and are about to legislate for cohabitation rights for gay couples). Where does that leave us? Political parties exist only in response to their electors. They are a reflection of those electors. When they are not, they are in trouble, as the PN is discovering now with this referendum result. The Labour Party must contend with an electorate (its own) that voted against EU membership, is racist and xenophobic, and stayed at home rather than follow the party directive to vote for divorce. What do you think the reaction to gay marriage among Labour supporters is going to be?]

Not to mention the fact that most of these liberals might have been offended irreparably by the PN’s official position on divorce, the hidden dirty tricks they used during the campaign, their ambiguous relationship with the church, or the disgustingly, patronising comments recently left by some of its members.

[Daphne – Absolutely, and if the PN has any strategic sense it will respond and make changes immediately. The prime minister has to do the same with his cabinet, which is currently made up entirely (with the exception of Mario de Marco) of representatives of its core conservative vote, while the liberal vote that returns it to power every time remains completely unrepresented.]

There’s a saying “Isma’ bilfors, emmen jekk trid”. This applies to the whole spectrum of politicians, influential contributors and the Church amongst others.

Bajd U Laham, Fenech Adami believes in liberty and his opinion is that the Catholic Church did not use that liberty to express its opinion. You were free to listen and free to decide.

If the divorce campaign was extended by another week we would have had another four groups on each side of the issue. Xi dwejjaq.

At times these soap-box speakers who preached in favour of one side or the other, did more damage to their cause.

A bit out of subject. Whenever Saviour Balzan speaks, especially in recent debates, his hatred for Gonzi PN is evident. His remark,”the beginning of the end for Gonzi PN” was silly, to say the least.

I think it is the contrary and that the PN can take advantage of the result, as you and many other commentators have said.

  5. A Grech says:

Daphne, you can be a huge asset to the citizens of this country by reporting what many others don’t dare to report but at times I’m tempted to label you as Xidja – why you keep bringing up silly things when there are so many serious things to talk about.

    Please!!!!!!

I notice that on this subject of divorce – and the position of the Church (which he attacks with the use of terms like “confessional”), to which the Church, as an interested stakeholder, is entitled – Joseph is not very “prudent” and he speaks out without fear.

On the contrary, on the subject of the dictator and murderer Gaddafi, and his regime, Joseph Muscat, the liberal-minded leader of the Partit Laburista, prefers to be “prudent.”

This goes to show the lack of substance of the Labour Leader, and no amount of brown foundation and volumiser will cover it up.

  8. Macduff says:

Perhaps it is time for another reshuffle, Daphne. The Nationalist Party desperately needs to pull its act together, if it wants to fight off Labour come 2013.

How can it do so with Tonio Fenech, him of the weeping Madonnas, and Tonio Borg embarrassing it everytime they open their mouths?
