From my experience, I can tell you that if you are in middle management you shouldn’t be living from hand to mouth. As for your pity towards low income earners, I would tell you to stop worrying because as soon as one’s income goes down, income tax/NI contributions will go down while social services shoot up.

If the “basic wage” earners start scraping the bottom they will be entitled to more help: if they have children studying they will have extra financial help and subsidies on their water and electricity bills.
