The pretext is that ‘The Premier’ was a gas bomb under the National Library.

Apart from the fact that it is a lie bigger than his waistline, when the issue is public security or national interest the government, through the Land Department has the power to evict without going to court.

According to Times of Malta, the Café Premier Minister earlier today said that the government was not prepared to spend years in court to get its property back.

He also said he was comforted by the fact that in its report, the NAO remarked that the price paid reflected the property’s commercial value.

The Café Premier Minister is purposely overlooking a basic point and twisting facts.

If the Government did not have a legal basis to terminate the lease, paying €4.2 million would have been acceptable, BUT the tenant was in breach of the lease and the government had every legal right to take it back without paying €4.2 million.

Another point to consider: aren’t the directors personally liable for tax and VAT not paid by a bankrupt company? Given their wealth and considerable assets, the government would have still been paid the outstanding tax and VAT had it sued.
