People are told that the boats are safe. By the time they find out it’s not the case, it’s too late to turn back.

They are usually beaten and threatened at gunpoint into boarding. ‘Safe’ is a relative term.

What it means to you means something entirely different to someone on the run from a hell of someone else’s making.

They will die on land instead of in the sea.

The purpose of the naval blockade they are talking about is not to prevent migrants reaching Europe but to get hold of those who are trafficking them.

Stop and think before you speak. If the immigrants are prevented from leaving Libya by sea, what do you think will happen? Are they going to turn right round and undertake the dangerous and expensive journey back home?

No. Those who are trafficking them will simply kill them where they are.
