Daphne,
Random capitalisation can Sometimes be used to Draw attention to specific words in a Sentence - in this case Nouns. It's actually something that was common place in the english language in 17th & 18th century (and is still part of modern day German). Shakespeare was party to such grammar crimes... but i don't think it stopped his message getting across. :)

Your primary concern should be that your daughter's headmistress doesn't know what proper nouns are.

The image of a school isn't affected by the smartness of its pupils but by a letter from the headmistress peppered with capital letters where none should be.

Don't bother about it - it's quite a common mistake since the advent of non-church, non-state schools. Before that (in the dark ages when I was at school), church schools were NEVER known as church schools but always as private schools.

It's a private school. The distinction is between state-owned and non-state-owned.

Private schools are then sub-divided into religious schools and independent schools.

Independent schools are then further subdivided into those run by foundations and trusts (not for profit), and those run as businesses (for profit).

So any other days girls can go to school without wearing full summer uniform, and with their shoes dirty.

Capital letters for nouns that are not proper nouns, calling the prime minister's wife 'Ms' - the headmistress needs to go back to school herself.
