The solution is to change the law on the way a Commissioner of Police is appointed and how he is removed.

It is precisely because the Opposition does not have the right to request (not order, those are your words not mine) an investigation that we are approaching Baku like there’s not tomorrow.

If the investigation does not happen or turns out to be a superficial or vitiated on is another matter.

It is at times like this that I truly despair. That the government and the Opposition MAY NOT request the Police Commissioner to investigate (or request him NOT to investigate) is a safeguard against the abuse of power and is in THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

It is so easy to tell that democracy did not evolve naturally in Malta but was imposed on it in the form of a simple parliamentary system and electoral vote. People just don’t understand these things. It’s actually disturbing.

Well if the Opposition as a constitutionally recognised entity has no right to formally request a police investigation into serious wrongdoing by government representatives and not based on frivolous impulses, then this may need to be re-evaluated as the current inaction by successive police commissioners is a salient case in point.

The Commissioner of Police cannot be ordered to investigate, not by the Opposition and not by the government. We are in a European Union member state, not Baku.

Requests for investigation/prosecution are covered by a restricted part of the law and you have to be directly involved: for example, a request for action (kwerela) if your neighbour slashes your car-tyres.

Has the Opposition written to the police commissioner officially requesting investigations yet?

If so, they should publish such official request.

No doubt that he will be called to the witness stand.
