Alfred Sant almost won the 2008 general election. He didn’t because his close aide Joseph Muscat let the cat out of the bag about the Mistra scandal that he planned on revealing, while talking within earshot – deliberately – of Nationalist Party officials.

And knowing what I do about his modus operandi – he thinks he is the original model for Niccolo Macchiavelli’s Prince – he will have done that specifically to destroy his boss’s chances of winning, which would allow him to become party leader and prime minister himself within five years, which he did. Labour will do anything and everything in their power to hang on to power, short of a military coup. In fact Muscat has already successfully manufactured a soft, silent coup d’état.

Today the Partit Laburista controls the army, the police force, Bank of Valletta, former Labour Party journalists and activists planted inside the courts of law as magistrates and judges, another crony holds the position of Law Commissioner, while many authorities have been neutered if not turned into a Labour Party club.

It would be foolish for the Nationalist Party and Maltese citizens hoping for a change to believe that the forthcoming general election campaign will not be a dirty and corrupt one. We shall be seeing a number of frame-ups, lies, corruption charges against Nationalist MPs, dishing out of favours to Labour cronies and supporters, and vote-rigging.

The recent poll commissioned by The Malta Independent showed a massive 33% of the electorate to be undecided/not voting. It would be foolish for anyone to make a prediction at this point.
