Because PROOF of an affair – and yes, you had to prove adultery in divorce cases of old – constitutes actual fornication. Anything else is not an affair – not adultery – but friendship. It’s sex that makes the difference, and how do you prove sex?

“Seeing your partner in an uncomfortable situation” – by which I suppose you mean compromising – is the sort of thing you have been brushing off as circumstantial evidence in this Panama scenario.

But when you see your girlfriend in a compromising situation with another man, you just know, don’t you – you don’t wait until you see them having sex. Well, same difference here.

We here have a prime minister and high level officers under a magistrate’s inquiry, and in a situation which conflicts with their posts.

With all the authorities and with all our affiliations with the EU and so forth, nothing if not the pressure by the population can make them suspend their posts or resign until they are acquitted from the serious allegations.

The smell of wrongdoing is too much for any serious public officer to represent our interests while there are doubts. It is not a matter of whether there is proof without reasonable doubt that they are guilty of any breach of law, but whether in their activities they have done anything unbecoming or unethical or irregular enough to represent a decent society in a European Union state.

I have a hunch that other banks were also used in similar arrangements – banks which loaned money to people who were almost bankrupt and were not paying rents and were paid by the Lands Department to return a cafe in Valletta.

I hope that the current serious allegation will bring about a proper effort by our society to modernise its authorities who will have the power and the controls to take action against the executive and legislative if necessary.
