Well, maybe this is a wake-up call to cease and desist from the dumb charity stunts

The President appears to believe that she is Malta’s fundraiser-in-chief rather than the head of state with a proper Constitutional role.

She has reduced that role to a total shambles.

The Community Chest Fund has always been taken care of traditionally by the First Lady, to give her something to do. It has never been the main role and purpose of the head of state, and it is totally ridiculous that President Coleiro should have brought that role down to this.

Secondly, this is not the Victorian or even the post-war age.

This is a welfare state, yet all this relentless fundraising for the sick, the poor, the old, the needy and the people who need fridges and slimming plans just makes you wonder whether we’re not living in sub-Saharan Africa or some developing country in South America where people depend on charity for survival.

Get a grip, the whole lot of you. You have turned private charity into a public circus and have made the challenge of raising money an end in itself.

It’s just another form of savagery.

Yes, life is boring on a small island, but charity is not an entertainment solution.
