Yana Mintoff, 65, son Danny Mainwaring, 32, stabbed by her Romanian boyfriend, 39; Mintoff’s Tarxien house set on fire

Yana (real name, Joan) Mintoff Bland, 65, one of former Maltese premier Dom Mintoff’s two daughters, was stabbed in the chest last night in a violent argument with her Romanian boyfriend, 39, at her home in Tarxien originally part of her parents’ house) where she and her boyfriend have been living.

Her son Danny Mainwaring, 32, whose father is Mrs Bland’s first husband, Geoff Mainwaring (she also has a daughter by him, Cetta Mainwaring), was knifed in the thigh when he went to his mother’s defence.

When Mrs Bland and Mr Mainwaring were driven by friends to the Paola state clinic for medical help, the boyfriend stayed behind and set a fire in the house. This brought the fire brigade and the police, who found the boyfriend up a tree and covered in blood.

Mrs Bland and Mr Mainwaring were taken from the Paola clinic to the state general hospital’s A & E department. Their injuries have been described as “minor”.

Yana Mintoff Bland with Konrad Mizzi at the vote-counting hall in the last general election. Trading on her father’s name and memory, she stood for election on the Labour Party ticket but gained few votes. Mrs Bland left Malta as a child in 1960 and has not lived in Malta since.
