Will the person with the above IP address who for the past few days has been using this blog to stalk me with obscene and violent remarks about myself and other people, and threats against various persons, using a variety of male and female names but unaware that the same IP address shows up against them, kindly desist from doing so or I will put this IP address on record with the police.

——-

Since the person in question doesn’t appear to know that I am addressing him, because he has just sent in another two pieces of violent abuse, I am going to reproduce his latest name and latest fake email address.

  1. Kenneth Cassar says:

You could report him/her to Melita (the ISP) as well. Make sure you do not delete the messages.

[Daphne – I haven’t. It’s not like I don’t have years of experience in dealing with nut-jobs and people with a pathological fixation.]

  2. Antoine says:

I would have reported him to the police before revealing his IP. If he starts using some stealth techniques like an IP shield, you won’t be able to identify him that easily.

http://www.nethealth.net.mt/cgi-bin/traceroute.cgi?host=88.203.26.13 shows it’s an onvol subscriber though (as Kenneth says) so if s/he does change their IP, you should be able to trace them via OnVOL.

According to an IP address search 88.203.26.13 is coming from server c26-13.i05-7.onvol.net .

Euroweb.net.mt is a web host very close to the MLP.

  5. Sandro says:

Seems like the IP location is Zebbug. (Try http://www.ip-adress.com/ipaddresstolocation/)

[Daphne – Thanks for confirming that, Sandro. Let’s see now. Who lives in Zebbug? Click.]

  6. Kenneth Cassar says:

Regarding Zebbug, don’t be too sure. The link Sandro gave shows my IP to be in Nadur, and I’m pretty sure I’m actually in Marsascala.

I believe that the locality is only an approximation. It shows a different location if you use another IP look-up site. However, what is certain is that the ISP is Onvol/Melita, and they would know whose the IP is.

  7. Meerkat :) says:

    @ Sandro

Don’t want to nit-pick. You mean Zebbug Gozo or Haz-Zebbug Malta?

  8. Marku says:

I hope you find him/her. What an ass!

  9. Kenneth Cassar says:

By the way, the locality would probably refer to the ISP, not the user.

  10. Dr. C. says:

The IP location only refers to where the server hosting the IP resides, not the address of the end user.

  11. amrio says:

    Dear all,

    Don’t confuse things please.

The IP address quoted only shows that this guy is sending mail from a PC who’s connected to the Internet via Melita as an ISP, not that he’s a Melita subscriber. The fact that he has a EuroWeb address means that at home, he has a EuroWeb internet connection. I was with EuroWeb, and as far as I know if you switch ISP, EuroWeb will cancel your account once you don’t pay for their Internet connection.
My guess is that he is using his home email address to send emails either from work or from a friend or relative’s PC (probably the former)
Daph, if the mails are being sent only during office hours, then probably he’s sending his dirty mails from work.

  12. Lino Cert says:

“The fact that he has a EuroWeb address means that at home, he has a EuroWeb internet connection”

I dont think he would be so stupid as to use his real email address, or could be a “she”

  13. Kenneth Cassar says:

    @ amrio:

“The IP address quoted only shows that this guy is sending mail from a PC who’s connected to the Internet via Melita as an ISP, not that he’s a Melita subscriber”.

True, but he can still be traced. If the police question the person who owns the pc, he will have to tell them who was using his pc at that particular time.

“The fact that he has a EuroWeb address means that at home, he has a EuroWeb internet connection”.

I think it has already been established that the email address is probably fake. He is not posting emails. He is posting messages to this blog, which requires an email address (even if it is fake).

  14. R says:

I dont see why you’re all wasting time with this guy. Most of your theories, such as the presumed location obtained via a simple traceroute are bullocks and in no way do they indicate the true location of the IP address, but rather the DSLAM’s location.

Daphne was quite clear. He’s been warned and should he be dumb enough to persist, well, I’m pretty sure the lads at the cyber crime unit would be having a word with him in a few days.

So please… just let Daphne handle it. I’m sure she could do without our advice.

  15. R says:

In relation to my previous post, kindly note that DSLAM had to read CMTS as DSLAMs are used only by adsl providers, whilst the IP address in question is assigned to a Melita cable subscriber. Therefore the IP indicates the region where the CMTS is based but not the subscriber.

  16. Tony Pace says:

    Get the police in. Period.
    These nuts are dangerous.

  17. Jomar says:

    I agree with Tony Pace.

Actually Daphne would have been smarter to report him first, then publish his/her IP address in case someone else is receiving this kind of garbage.

[Daphne – Believe me, I know what I’m doing.]

  18. Kenneth Cassar says:

@ R: What you say is true, but like I said, all that matters is that the IP points to the user’s PC.

Also, don’t be too hard on people who are only trying to help, even if what they write doesn’t really help. If Daphne didn’t want comments, she would have disabled the comments function.

  19. Graham C. says:

I’ll try to help a bit:You can run a trace from your own PC.

Open command promt , tracert 88.203.26.13

    4 16 ms 17 ms 16 ms 217.22.191.105
    5 17 ms 18 ms 18 ms 217.22.191.50
    6 19 ms 18 ms 17 ms vl02-north01.csr01.onvol.net [212.56.129.104]
    7 17 ms 18 ms 18 ms gi01-ubr6.csr01.onvol.net [212.56.130.26]
I assume the last computer accessed was his computer, [212.56.130.26] .

    Using http://www.ip-adress.com/ipaddresstolocation/
    IP address: 212.56.130.26
    IP country: Malta
    IP Address state:
    IP Address city: San Gwann
    IP latitude: 35.905602
    IP longitude: 14.476100
    ISP: Melita Cable plc
    Organization: Melita Network
    Host: gi01-ubr6.csr01.onvol.net

Hope this is of any help and doesn’t just point to some Onvol Server :)

  20. Mario P says:

@Graham C – wow that’s impressive – with the lat and long you can actually pinpoint the house in Google Earth.

[Daphne – Graham is a real person and a very young one. Maybe you should hire him.]

  21. Mario P says:

Daphne – ask Graham to send his cv to my email address. Thanks. No promises but you never know.

[Daphne – Graham, if you’re reading this, drop me a line at dcg@proximuspr.com and I’ll put you in touch with Mario. Thanks for those coordinates. Paul mapped them and the location he pinpointed is just a couple of blocks away from the Malta Today offices. This could, of course, be an incredible coincidence.]

  22. Antoine Vella says:

Graham’s linked website (http://www.ip-adress.com/ipaddresstolocation/) allows you to map the location of the IP address. My own IP, for example, is located close to the university (bang in the middle of the skateboarding roundabout actually) which makes sense as the uni is my ISP. I live in Balzan, however.

According to the same website the IP address 212.56.130.26 is located somewhere in the San Gwann Industrial Estate.

[Daphne – The location pin-pointed is just a couple of blocks away from the Malta Today office. With geographical coordinates, you can pinpoint it pretty accurately. However, as several people have already pointed out, IP addresses are dynamic, so this kind of information is not reliable. It can be double-checked in other ways to give you a better indication of the likelihood or otherwise of this information being correct. In this case, for example, I happen to have the IP address for emails sent from the Malta Today offices. I looked them up, matched them to the IP address for the latest abusive comment, and the number is the same one. So what we have here is IP address X showing up for Malta Today emails being exactly the same as the IP address for an abusive comment posted on this site, and the geographical coordinates given for that IP address pointing to a location not just roughly in the area of the Malta Today offices, but just a couple of blocks away.]
