What was it that police officer said? That this is not Somalia?

Well, we sure have a lot of men around who think they’re starring in A Fistful of Dollars.

Updated: Man slightly injured in Siggiewi shooting
A man slightly injured in a shooting incident in the limits of Siggiewi yesterday evening has been released from hospital this morning, the police said. They said that two men, both from Siggiewi, had an argument at around 7.30 p.m. and one of them, a 26-year-old, was hit when a shotgun was fired. The other man, a 32-year-old, has been arrested.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke is holding an inquiry.

You’ll notice that all these shootings are acts of revenge or passion or both. If you keep your nose clean, and mix with the right people, you’ll be ok. I don’t know the exact numbers but I wonder what the statistics say about random violence? Where the victim does NOT know the attacker. I get the impression that this is rare in Malta. Am I right or is it just an impression?
[Daphne – That’s just your impression. We have had at least two ‘random shootings’, within my memory at least: a man in Zejtun, if I recall correctly, who flipped and began chasing people and shooting in the street after his wife hassled him to do something because their son was being picked on. And the other was when a man got onto a bus with a gun – that was in Paola, I think. And no, it isn’t only about revenge. And I don’t think keeping your nose clean is sufficient safeguard. I think what you mean is keeping your head down, not keeping your nose clean – which is what people tend to do here anywhere, not to attract attention, violence and the evil eye.]
Slightly worse than Somalia. These men were both carrying guns….legally!
On a different note…if you missed last night`s 7.30pm news on One TV, Dr.Joe Mifsud spoke about the situation in Gaza…the caption underneath read…ESPERT FUQ IL VANT NOFSANI! Blair beware!
[Daphne – Oh dear God, how presumptuous he is, with his law degree and his ‘experience’ in the Super One newsroom.]
unfortunately some people will only obey one law – the law of force. Stalin once (in)famously asked how many battalions did the Pope have. In little Malta, some people are impervious to the demands of the law and will laugh in your face if you plead illegality (try pleading that to a bird trapper/shooter).
The Zejtun incident wasn’t random at all – as far as I know all victims were related to the man who threatened murderer’s son… long story and quite a pathetic one really.
There was also the Mosta shooting of a completely innocent passer-by. Remember il-Pips, a dealer who got high on his own stuff and in a fit of paranoia thought that the victim was after him?
I agree that the Tiger Bar area was always shady but its still sad that someone got mugged for simply stopping to buy a Coke… regardless of who the muggers were.
@Dunstan: “Slightly worse than Somalia” – that was tongue in cheek right?
On a different note. The kumpilazzjoni on the Mqabba shooting case started yesterday. I found this video on You Tube which shows that were it not for the prompt action of the two police officers the situation would have been far worse..a massacre perhaps!

[Daphne – And then some other police officers felt it necessary to shoot dead a man who hadn’t taken his medication and who was armed with a – oooh, scary – penknife.]
I did mean keeping your nose clean. Keeping your head down is slightly different. I meant be careful of what company you keep, and what you get involved in. If you are sleeping with somebody else’s wife on the sly, you may be keeping your head down, but you certainly are not keeping your nose clean. You’re asking for trouble. (not necessarily shot, but you are asking for trouble!).
[Daphne – Oh great, so the law of the jungle prevails. If you have an affair you can expect to get shot.]
