Sharon's ship is sinking

Here’s a comforting thought: Sharon Ellul Bonici is doing really badly. Here’s a not-so-comforting thought. The man who gave up his seat to Joseph Muscat might yet be rewarded with a seat in the European Parliament – and he can’t even speak English.

  1. Albert Farrugia says:

Sharon faring badly…and this in an ant-EU party! Interesting innit?

[Daphne – All the candidates on the Labour list voted against EU membership, Albert, because they all voted for Sant in 2003. Sharon is exceptional only in the fact that she hasn’t toned down her extreme position. She has fared badly because there was an internal whispering campaign against her – just as there was a whispering campaign in favour of Joseph Cuschieri.]

  2. Shannon Andrews says:

Probably she is negotiating a contract with the Eurosceptics right now.

  3. il-Ginger says:

Does that matter? You can address Europe in Maltese.

Better Cuschieri then Mizzi. Mizzi not only doesn’t know how to vote, but only realized after she told everybody, so this election could have gone worse for Malta.

    • Corinne Vella says:

      ‘address Europe in Maltese’

That’s a little grandiose, don’t you think? What you really mean is that MEPs may address the European Parliament in Maltese. It’s funny, though, that no one who complains about how taxes are spent ever complains about this particular waste of tax money.

  4. Meerkat:) says:

Joseph C might ask Anglu the Elephant to help him improve his English…

  5. Mark Dalli says:

The fact he cannot speak English is no problem – that is why the PN made Maltese an official EU language.

[Daphne – Is he going to drag an interpreter round the corridors to help him communicate with others, then?]

    • Frank says:

Official EU language or not, I think that Maltese MEPs should stop this absurd nonsense of addressing the EU parliament in Maltese. It is too pedantic and pointless seeing that we are supposed to be fairly competent in English. Besides, being able to communicate in English should not be seen as demeaning (colonial hangups and all that crap) but rather as a positive attribute that gives us the edge on a multitude of other Europeans who cannot.

  6. David Buttigieg says:

Actually one reason I am happy Louis Grech is in the lead for Labour is that he is the only one who used common sense and addressed the EP in English i.e. avoiding, for example, the need for two translators, one from Maltese to English and another for English to, say, Latvian (or whatever the language is in Latvia, don’t feel like looking it up) when both can speak English to begin with.

  7. P Shaw says:

Muscat and Jason have lured Sharon to run on an MLP ticket, in order to make sure that she does not run on an independent ticket (remember the youtube campaign she launched lin April 2008 for the new party?). Once she was safely on the Labour ticket, Jason & Co launched a whispering campaign against her.

  8. Frank says:

I am a staunch europhile and have always believed that Malta’s place was in the EU. Having said that I am still amazed by people out there who are either unable or do not want to understand that individuals critical of the EU, eurosceptics or whatever you want to call them, should also be in the european parliament. In Denmark anti-EU parties do their best to get members elected and nobody bats an eyelid. Danes understand that the European Union and its parliament are not perfect and that a critical eye and voice are also essential to further Danish interests. It is only in Malta that we drag political debate into a simplistic and foul gutter, where the only strategy is to use any means possible to discredit and demolish anybody of a different persuasion.

[Daphne – Nobody is saying that people who were anti-EU shouldn’t be in the European Parliament. We’re just remarking on the strange logic of voting for somebody who tried to do you in only six years ago. I can understand somebody who was against EU membership voting for a Labour candidate. I can’t understand what would make somebody who voted for EU membership give a leg up to somebody who didn’t. That’s all.]

  9. J. Mifsud says:

By any chance, all you who seem to know anything and everything about the PL (whispering campaigns etc), can you please illuminate us about any whispering campaigns against any PN candidate? Thanks in anticipation.

  10. Antoine Vella says:

Is it true that Joseph Cuschieri can’t speak English? On his Hi5 profile he claims to be reading European law at the University of London.

    [Daphne – Long distance?]

  11. marks says:

no antoine i don’t think thats true – its just joseph cuschieri is really hated around here

  12. Joseph Micallef says:

After all this may well be a blessing in disguise for the PN!! And by the way, if the MLP MEPs were incredibly good how come two out of three will be left out in the cold? Also, what is this movement Muscat is talking about? Surely not the European Socialist Movement with the resounding thumping it got.

  13. Lorna says:

I’m really happy Sharon wasn’t elected – or at any rate, she is not likely to be. This is just the people’s way of thanking her for almost making us miss the opportunity to join the EU. Being a Eurosceptic is different from trying to keep a whole nation out of the EU to further one’s own political interests and to sabotage the government’s project just because it’s not one’s own government.

For me, this in itself, is a great victory of common sense and “divine” retribution.

    • kev says:

True, Lorna, but I would blame Dr Fenech Adami. He should never have asked ‘the people’ to decide, or at least he should have made it clear that it was not a real referendum: there should never have been a No side and no one should have been allowed to campaign for the ‘No’.

But all in all, this was a great victory for the Maltese Europhiles. They will have six seats in the EP. And our tough representatives can continue playing the Yes games that are played in that arena, including the Yes-for-pocketing-delegation-funds game and other spare-change games. ‘The people’ won’t even notice as they chew on sugared carrots; and deafened as they are by whispering loudhailers, they would mistake a whistle for a hiss and run the blower down like a snake. Not even Salvu Balzam, the great defender of humanity, is able to want to see through the charade. And Daphne? Well, we all know she is a focused person and that easily translates to narrow-mindedness. She will never sniff the penny in the left hand as the right hand holds her ‘EU passport’ before her squinting eyes.

So there – a great victory for all, even with Fenech Adami’s referendum ordeal. As you said, Lorna, “divine retribution”.

      • Corinne Vella says:

“there should never have been a No side and no one should have been allowed to campaign for the ‘No’.”

Are you for real? This wasn’t a referendum. This was a EP election – the second, in case you hadn’t noticed.

Whispering campaigns are notoriously effective at undermining all other attempts to sell a political idea or candidate. Perhaps you should lay some blame at that particular PL door.

      • Antoine Vella says:

Kev, are you accusing Louis Grech and the other PL MEPs of ..how did you put it?….playing the “Yes-for-pocketing-delegation-funds game and other spare-change games.” ?

      • Mandy Mallia says:

Oh Kev – Why don’t you just go and make use of those celebratory pink balloons,? Just make sure you don’t land in the gravy train this time.

  14. Ian says:

Going from being a welder at drydocks to reading law in England without knowing English makes me wonder – is this all part of the progressive party?

[Daphne – Nothing wrong with going from being a welder to reading law. I would say that’s to be admired. But no, it isn’t possible with no knowledge of English, which is why he’s taking a distance learning course.]

  15. Mandy Mallia says:

Do you really mean that he can’t speak English at all, or that he simply can’t speak proper English? Either way, it’s a shame.

  16. Nigel says:

We are all saying that Sharon has always been a Euro sceptic and that she has not changed her stance. At least she is not a hypocrite like the rest of the PL charlatans including Joseph Muscat who were totally against the EU, were part of Sant’s team who froze our membership application in 1996, voted no in the referendum, but still contested both MEP elections in ’04, and now are stating that they have had a massive victory. They do not believe in the EU but the gravy train is irresistible.

If you fight for a cause that you do not believe in that makes you a mercenary who is interested only in the money.
