Muscat's got a little competition for his anti-government demo

What's it to be? Liverpool-Man U or a thrilling anti-government demo?

What's it to be? Liverpool-Man U or a thrilling anti-government demo?

I guess Joseph Muscat’s not a sporting man. I know that his new public affairs consultant is clueless about public affairs. First rule of event-planning: check what else might be on that day that people might prefer going to, and allow for unexpected competition, like an earthquake or the birth of the new messiah.

So if you’re Joseph Muscat and Marisa Micallef, you’ll think that the big event on the afternoon of Sunday, 25 October is the Labour Party’s – sorry, national coalition’s – anti-government demonstration in Haz-Zabbar.

But if you’re anyone else, the big event that afternoon is the Liverpool-Manchester United match, and if you’re not staying home to watch it, your husband certainly is.

So Muscat’s going to find himself with a crowd of football widows or people who are so keen to hear yet another of his dispiriting harangues that they’ll tape the match to watch it later.

He told us the other day, amid all the kvetching and griping, that he’s close to the people and knows what they want. I guess this means he’s not close enough to know that a good 70 per cent of the men in this country support either the one or the other, and that 90 per cent of men would rather watch the match anyway than stand about on some street listening to somebody moan into a microphone – no matter how much they might love him.

I suppose Muscat’s counting on a lot of marital rows that will lead to many men being dragged to his demonstration and away from the match against their will, or on enthusiasm for him trumping enthusiasm for one of the most-anticipated matches this year.

You know what this reminds me of? The time the Labour Party held a fund-raising telethon on Super One in the general election campaign last year….while every Labour supporter who could drive, walk, catch the bus and stand was at a mass meeting on the Floriana granaries, screaming adulation for Alfred Sant.

The only people watching that telethon were people who weren’t at the mass meeting because they were damned if they were going to vote Labour – like me. I watched, and like everyone else watching, I didn’t give – not a damn and not a cent.

Labour – they’re so slick.

Well, Marisa MIcallef is even stupider than we thought. A friend tells me she has a passion for English football, so she actually knows about the big match and failed to recognise that this is serious competition. To my mind, having a clue about public affairs and ignoring them is even worse than being clueless about public affairs.

Halleluja! Sport – and more importantly Manchester United – have finally made it onto this blog!

Giggsy has played more than 800 matches for ManU; a ton of trophies and not a single red card. There’s an on-line petition to the Queen for the award of a knighthood … get on and sign it if you haven’t already done so.

[Daphne – Something tells me I’m going to have to start separate threads for fanatics of Eastenders and Manchester United.]

A choice between real and political football.

EastEnders is my favourite programme and Man. United is my favorite team. Just great.

    • Darren says:

How can you stand a programme like ‘EastEnders’, Jenny?

      • Jenny says:

I watch EastEnders everyday, and really hate missing an episode. I also enjoy watching Casualty and Holby City. Come to think of it I enjoy watching BBC Prime even though there are many repeats. British comedy is another favourite of mine.

I like The Antiques Road Show, Cash in the Attic, Bargain Hunt and Only Fools and Horses. But if there is a game like this on TV, I would be watching it – no need to say that our roads would be virtually empty.

I’m no great football fan: the best United match I watched on TV was when Scmeichel in the last minutes went out to ‘help’ his team confusing his adversaries.

Manchester United scored the equaliser, the game went into extra time and ended with a penalty shootout. United won.

    • john xuereb says:

      How sad.

    • Darren says:

I like watching BBC Prime too, especially the sitcoms; Only Fools & Horses is my favourite, but I cannot stand the soaps. I do have to watch them sometimes, though, because my girlfriend never misses an episode.

why dont you talk about something serious for the maltese people instead of the usual political propoganda daphne

Half HIV infected in Malta are immigrants…and the number has qradrupled…hurrah for you multi culturalism. Three cheers.

    • Jenny says:

And who are the other half may I ask?

      • john aguis says:

The other half are maltese obviously …some might be some unfortunate victims who went with that immigrant who was prostituting herself. if you remember the story on the newspaper article..and daphne ..are you implying im a terrorist now becuase im worried for the maltese people getting infected? haha…i guess any type of conversation regarding immigrants you always try to make him/her look as an evil racist right..there’s no space for discussion with you… no problem say whatever you like…im just worried and yes also angry that the goverment is letting his people get infected to defend these ‘poor souls; but not enough to go and make an arson attack on people..bye and take care

    • john aguis says:

and if that’s not enough for you.

      http://www.bio-medicine.org/medicine-news/Number-of-TB-Cases-in-Malta-Increasing-in-Part-Because-of-Immigration-20245-1/

but i guess since your family is safe and sound in the villa its ok right no need to worry about the rest of the maltese.

[Daphne – Actually, ‘john’, the one place my family was NOT safe and sound was ‘in the villa’ (it isn’t one, incidentally), because that’s where people of your sentiments tried to burn us alive in our beds.]

      • JBB says:

‘unfortunate victims who went with that immigrant who was prostituting herself’

        beautiful logic.

        prostitute = evil murderer.
horny bastard who abuses prostitute’s vulnerability (and does not use protection) = victim.

is it a coincidence that misogyny and racism so often go hand in hand?

      • john aguis says:

That’s a pity …putting your family at risk to protect these ‘poor’ souls jahasra ux..these ‘poor’ souls come equipped with a satellite phone and well fed. I dont even know myself what a satellite phone is. How lucky and convenient that these poor souls found a satellite phone while running away from war ux. haha! funny indeed.

[Daphne – Kemm int bniedem ahdar. It doesn’t take a wild guess to work out that you vote Labour, as you explained in a coarse and vulgar comment which I deleted. Such brilliant irony: Muscat bleats about his progressive party, and all the backward, backwoods, extreme-right racists flock to vote for it. You deserve each other. More fool the ‘liberals’ who think they’ve found their home with Muscat, only to discover they’re sharing it with the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis.]

    • Joseph Micallef says:

      John

Any ideas of your own as to how address the issue? …or is it just talking you are interested in.

As for the competing events, granted that I am no fan of the teams vying for attention against Joe…but hey wait a second, I wouldn’t be sure I want to miss the gathering…curious as I am to see how Jason and Marisa will behave, as the earth shattering drama unfolds!

      • john aguis says:

the solution is simple joseph….forget the multi cultural idea/fantasy and protect the lives of the maltese first and foremost.have to go be back later if you want to discuss.

      • Joseph Micallef says:

And how do you suggest we do it!

      • John Schembri says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if statistics show that 10% of people using our health services are Africans. And 25% of the janitors in our hospitals are non-Europeans.

    • Jenny says:

      @ john agius
The “poor soul” should have gone with a Maltese prostitute. It might have been ‘safer’.

      • john aguis says:

Jenny it might not have been safer going with a maltese you’re right. But two wrongs don’t make a right…however taking in context that hiv has doubled in Malta one has to be totally stupid not to attribute this to immigrants but to attribute this to us not having safe sex..unsafe sex has always been a problem for malta..immigration only until recently..and only until recently the rate of HIV has doubled..and increased 8% in europe in just one year..so i attribute this to immigration yes(let’s hope i dont get called racist and xenophobic against hiv pplfor this these are REAL statistics)..now they will once again attack us for saying this and say we are discrimating hiv infected people and stigma ..bla bla bla more human rights excuses and counter attacks instead of delving into the truth.

    • Antoine Vella says:

John agius (I’ve spelt your first name with a capital letter as, in English, ‘john’ might mean something else)

I don’t identify with your prejudice and bigotry: they represent a mentality that I know exists but which is alien to me so you and I obviously belong to different subcultures. You may however express freely your opinion – shameful as it might be – because in Malta we enjoy that multi-culturalism which you despise so much.

      • john aguis says:

As usual instead of an intelligent reply..an immediate attack. ..prejudice bigotry racism stigma taboo..any other fancy word?
        When I said…
let’s hope i dont get called racist and xenophobic against hiv ppl for this these are REAL statistics…
        which part didn’t you understand.
        These are Strict Facts.
Africa = half the worlds HIV poulation
malta HIV doubles.Guess why.condom use? no! immigration.
Yes I despise having to integrate with some nation who half of them are HIV infected. Maybe you can prove to me how multicurtural you are by having sexual intercourse with the hiv infected africans? Or maybe tell your children to do so.
I’m sure you would tell them not to if you cared for their welfare that is.

  8. john aguis says:

    JBB
you got it wrong. sorry maybe i didn’t explain well enough
unfortunate victims who went with that immigrant(hiv infected) who was prostituting herself’

beautiful logic. I think it was on news about a year ago.

prostitute+hiv = hiv to the maltese unfortunate.
i hope it makes sense now..this is not some racist blabber but actual fact and news that an hiv infected immigrant was prostituting herself. Anyway the way we’re heading..nationalism doubling in Malta and also in all of europe we are heading for disaster and the sooner the goverments of all europe realise that integration with someone who wants to replace you and take over you is impossible the better. Goverments in other countries are deciding to absorb the nationalism (you can call them racists neo nazis whatever for now) . Why you ask? By absorbing them and joining they avoid letting them take over basically the majority of people and avoid a catasrophe. Like Sarkozy did and Berlusconi they gave them seats but try to control them..look at the way they are treating immigrants roma people ..and those camps in france. Really do you people follow the european news or just local news. Will the Maltese goverment just watch like the rest of Europe and let nationalism get bigger? Things are getting serious if you really check..and its not jusr racism ..it isn’t coming from nothing ..even Sweden Denmark..the most ‘peacful’ in Europe..neo nazism is doubling also.

    • Jenny says:

Neo nazism should please you, as the arguments you put forward are extreme right.

[Daphne – Le, ‘john agius’ – who has now started to post comments as Mark Cuschieri – qieghed mal-progressivi ta’ Muscat.]

      • Jenny says:

If his thoughts are progressive then I’m a supermodel.

      • haha I don’t give a rat’s ass about Dr.Muscat..really Daphne I thought you understood what I stand for from your last post. You made me laugh and I really felt proud. Trying to associate me with Dr.Muscat will get you nowhere …I do not care neither about Gonzi ..nor about Muscat…both are finished in my opinion..just like this country at the present moment.

[Daphne – You’re the one who said you vote Labour. Clearly, you’re confused.]

  9. One last thing before I go Daphne no need to post them ..first of all I have nothing against you..I love you as I love all maltese…UNLESS what you do or say will cause death and misery to other maltese people..or let a 14 year old maltese girl get raped by a savage african…this I will never tollerate and willing to go to the extreme end to stop him and help the poor girl. Please try to show the current goverment that the way he is going is a catastrophe…nazism will rise as long as immigration rises I can promise you that..it has happened in all of europe..do you think Malta is special..this amount of immigrants coming is making people edgy and swiftly joining what you term nazis.Since you called me a Nazi I leave you with this song listen to it at your own leisure ahahahha

    • Daphne I’m back./.I vote labour because I see this country is finished..doesn’t mean I feel he will do a better job..he will probably be another alfred sant complex.

      • Jenny says:

Your reasoning is way out of this world. If all the people who will vote labour in 2013 have the same mentality as you do, then “this country is finished” or better still doomed.

      • ok so let me be straight…I am 29 years old…1996 election..was too young..wanted to vote MLP..1998 realized he was too contradicting..vat/sisa idiocracy..he was always contradicting himself so I didn’t vote him in 1998 I voted PN. Well you could call me a floater ..I see it as an intelligent voting disattached from any tradition..I vote who I think at that time is best for the job. So 98 voted Pn at first I liked eddie and he had my support but as I read what I read on news (to refrain from be insultive) he lost my credibility..2003 voted mlp…2008 voted mlp..wanted change in the country..2012 will probably vote mlp again since I see the goverment unmoveable on the illegal immigration issue..who knows he might solve it till 2012 send most of them back ..leave some here ..I have no problem with that..even multi culuturalism would be agreeable for me if the number is small ..say like they leave 2000 refugee in Malta. In that case I would vote PN. So as you said earlier on I’m blurRed (not visually)hehhe
