Sharon Ellul Bonici's political playmate says we should leave Schengen
These are days for things to come crawling out of the woodwork. First it was the Communists, and now it’s Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici.
Standing before a CNI backdrop – CNI, like the Communist Party, is back – he told reporters that Malta must withdraw from the Schengen area at once. Schengen is a form of colonialism and anyway, Gaddafi doesn’t like it. And we all know by now that Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici likes Gaddafi.
He said that Malta is now being forced to abide by decisions which are not in the national interest, where dealings with Libya are concerned.
Something tells me he belongs to the school of thought that would have had Malta shackled to Italy to stop the bombing in World War II.
People like that can’t distinguish between short-term and long-term interest, and fail to understand the wisdom of pulling together with others so that others will pull together with you when you need them to do so.
Despite the many, precious and hard-won Maltese business interests in Libya, I am certain that if you ask people whether they would rather be in Schengen than in a close friendship with Libya, given that the two would appear right now to be mutually exclusive, they would go for Schengen.
It appears that Astrid Vella has fixed the description ‘flawed’ into what was always a highly restricted vocabulary. The Times reports Mifsud Bonnici as saying that “the Schengen arrangement is flawed”. Given that he speaks Maltese at press conferences, I would imagine that this is The Times’ reporter’s choice of word.
And what do you know – he’s back to defending the Constitution. Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici’s defence of the Constitution has always been highly selective. The bits to do with rights and how they should be respected tended to be overlooked in his time as premier.
But now he thinks, as he has for some time, that the Maltese army’s participation in EU and Nato military missions violates the country’s neutral and non-aligned status.
Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici – right now, Joseph Muscat needs him like he needs a hole in the head.

Helsien, non-alignment, neutrality – have these guys understood that it’s 2010?
No.
Dear Labour party, who’s the leader: Joseph Muscat or Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici? Answers please before the next general election.
IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT ASK DR. GONZI.
They’re one and the same. Mark my words: come 2013, Joseph Muscat will withdraw Malta from PfP, the EU military committee, the European Defence council, and the EUPM in Georgia. If anyone wants us to become the laughing stock of the world they should vote Labour.
Incarcru demmna ghall-barrani, mhux hekk, Kev?
It seems the dinosaurs are back.
I don’t know how Joseph Muscat will be going to Australia and leaving all this behind him. How can he trust all these factions not to cause his party any trouble while he is away.
Dont worry isnt it better for gonzipn?
It’s no good for anyone that a party that wants to govern doesn’t know whether it’s coming or going.
Been there, done that.
Thank you for this opportunity and freedom of speech! Let no authorities intervene.
Why doesn’t KMB retire from public life, live happily and leave us in peace.
Maybe it’s because we need to be reminded of what life was like when Malta was led by someone who hadn’t been voted into parliament.
HE WAS ELECTED FROM 2 DIST. WITH OVER 12000 VOTES
YA John, stop shouting please. When KMB was elected as you say (and I did not check the facts), “Malta was led” by Eddie Fenech Adami.
Duminku biss issa baqa biex jerga johrog. Dak zgur li jbezzaghhom, ghax jigi ghalihom bil-bastun. U imbaghad jaraw x’veru nsarfu ahna il-Maltin qalbiena, dawk il-qabda p**ta tas-Cnagen, jew ma nafx xi jghidulhom.

KMB’s instructions to the Irish to vote no in the Treaty of Lisbon without mentioning the huge economic gains the Irish made out of the EU is a huge gross ignorance.

I thought he would say that we should stand by Switzerland in its position against Ghaddafi, considering that he has neutrality at heart, and that he supported the Partnership and the Switzerland in the Mediterranean policies of his failed successor.
Switzerland is one of the oldest neutral states in Europe, and Switzerland is not a Member State of the EU. That said, talk of a unilateral action as backed by Joseph Muscat (The Times, 13 March 2010), is similar political nonsense.
My God…. Your acumen is Malta’s best interests in geopolitics is so enlightened… I think you should apply for Tonio Borg’s job!
How does Tonio Borg come into this? It was Joseph Muscat who according to The Times suggested unilateral action (Saturday, 13 March 2010). “The time has come for action by the Maltese government, even unilateral action, to safeguard the national interest and the interests of Maltese families.”
Is Joseph seriously suggesting that Malta defiantly reaches unilateral agreements with Libya over visas? Do you seriously believe that unilateral action would be in the national interest?
You see, Minister Tonio Borg is holding meetings with other EU countries affected, so that is not unilateral action.
Well, maybe Malta should consider sending Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici to the EU to officially inform them that the Schengen Agreement, which has been in place since 1985, is “flawed”. Perhaps also suggesting a couple of adjustments to suit the most important of the EU states – Malta.
No… What would be best is for the PN administration to send over a delegation led by Tonio Borg with people like KMB accompanying him… And, yes, as Tonio Borg himself hinted – and not, I add, in isolation within the EU – if necessary, to ignore the Schengen clauses misused by Switzerland.
Once again it’s back to the colonial mentality – take, take, take and let it never cross your mind to give something back in return.
Dear Daphne, you manged to send a shiver down my spine as KMB’s photo reminded me of Saturn devouring his Son by Goya.
Dear Karmenu,
The Armed Forces, to a man, would like to send you a big loud F**K OFF.
This guy has reached old far(t)dom. Time to pack it in.
Wasn’t KMB going round Malta door-to-door with some anti-EU protest or other? I’m still waiting … to slam the door in his face.
It’s time to realise his wildest dreams.
