And the band plays on
So they’re carrying on with the festivities in Xaghra, as planned. Our Lady of Victories should be thrilled.
This is not the time to make smart remarks about Gozitans, so I won’t. But I’m tempted.
The parish priest felt the need to point out that yesterday’s festivities were cancelled. Well, I should ruddy well hope so. What was the alternative: five truckloads of fireworks blow up at 6pm, killing four people including a pregnant 21-year-old and leaving another two with 80 per cent burns, and while rescuers are searching through the rubble the band plays in the village square?
I don’t think so.
Let’s see if I can follow the line of reasoning here. Issa la mietu, mietu. Imbilli ma naghmlu xejn, x’se niehdu b’daqshekk? Majtezewel carry on.

They have got to be joking. Why not slot in a question about divorce while they’re at it?
Trid jew ma tridx li f’Malta jidhol id-divorzju?
Le, ghax diga haddtu mil-AwstrUUUlja.
Did you notice that ‘some of its members had a conflict of interest.’? The whole thing is a shame and a mess. Tal-biki – but I have no more tears.
Fireworks enthusiasts always insist that without “nar” there would be no festa. Since they won’t have any fireworks display this year, they are contradicting themselves by going ahead with the festivities anyway.
Have you seen the comments on timesofmalta.com? I’ve rarely been this appalled.
Here’s one of the gems:
“to those accusing the priest: Sorry to say, but I DO NOT AGREE with what you are saying. First of all, the church and those organizing fireworks are different organizations. Secondly, we paid thousand of euros, which were blown up like this, and now you’re asking for the feast to be cancelled as well, more thousand euros to be blown in vain too?? are you serious?? we will not be celebrating the death of these people mind you, but the birth of our lady!! we are a catholic village who celebrate feast with a religious aspect, unlinke most of your feast who swear, and celebrate feast with a very ateist side!!!
This have nothing to do with you, and please shut up and don’t come if you simply do not agree. Band marches will be different than usual and that’s for sure. But you don’t have any right to impose on our priest and tell him what to do?!!! who are you?!! neither the prime minister can tell him what to do.
I symphatize with the families involved!! You’ll never be forgotten, and the people of Xaghra will keep you in their heart and in their prayers”
I wonder if any billboards will be erected to illuminate us as to God’s will with regards to this mess and waste of human lives.
Or is God only interested in sex and marital affairs?

In the meantime, an immense car-cade (over a hundred cars, for sure), equipped with horns and loud music, has just passed through Mqabba, Qrendi, Kirkop and other villages celebrating the conclusion of Zurrieq’s village feast.
Il-karkejd tax-xalata jghidulha! As if it wasn’t enough that all of us living in these neighbouring villages had to endure a whole week of bum bum bang at all times of the day and night.
Somebody has to stop this madness.
The state is responsible. The police are responsible.
And most of all the Catholic Church, which is supposed to represent Christ not Pontius Pilate!
ALLA DILETTANT TAN-NAR
Satan will vouch for that.
I saw that carcade along the Coast Road. What impressed me most was the dangererous manner in which a truck and a jeep were loaded with people standing up, half drunk, swaying and singing.
Just one sudden braking and they would have all come flying off the vehicles.
Another car had a thick ‘garland’ stuck on the windscreen and I can’t for the life of me imagine how the driver could have a clear view of the road.
Not one policeman in sight when I’m sure they know that this farce takes place along the coast road every Monday evening.
[Daphne – Do they still drive along Tower Road past the Preluna? Or have they been put off by the traffic jams over the years? On Monday evenings in summer we used to watch the lorries laden with creatures from another planetary culture as they rolled past drinking and swearing and pulling out their family jewels and spitting. At least we knew it wasn’t because Labour had won yet another election because there were no Patrick Holland posters.]
I remember those carcades as well. When I was a kid, they used to pass through the main streets of Mellieha at 8 – 9 am on their way to Armier. and at 6 pm on their way back.
They call this Supremazija in Zurrieq
I don’t know about Tower Road, but they still stop at Bugibba square acting like savages as tourists watch in bewilderment.
Daphne, you say “it wasn’t because Labour had won yet another election”.
Well, Labour won only two consecutive elections in your lifetime, so “yet another” sounds a bit exaggerated.
And I would dare say that if after a Labour victory they limit themselves to celebrating on trucks past the Preluna, drinking, swearing, showing off their family jewels and spitting, that would be very decent celebration by Labour standards.
It’s so simple, the feast is just a show, within a bigger show. And I guess everyone knows that “the show………”
To my knowledge , police are being stationed at the Regional Road crossing into St Julian’s on Monday evenings, not allowing the “Marmalja tax-Xalati” to parade through St Julian’s and Tower Road.
“Our Lady of Victories should be thrilled. ”
She is: we’re back to the days of appeasing the gods through human sacrifice.
Imbaghad irridu li l-Knisja tibqa’ relevanti! I have never been so disgusted in recent memory! The superciliousness of the archpriest on timesofmalta.com is incredible.
How could he be so out of touch? Maturity? Pah!
Bqajna bil-kummiedji tal-carcades u l-pulizijia ma taghtix kaz tal-periklu li jgibu maghhom fit-toroq.
Nitakar meta Birkirkara kienu rebuhu l-league. Naf persuna xtrat karozza li kienet scrapped, naturalment minghajr number plates biex qaghdet iddur biha fil-carcades. Ara kemm kienet safe din il-vettura ghat-triq?
Xi snin ilu rajt ukoll f’Tower Road is-supporters tal-football team tas-Sliema jaghmel dawn il-kummiedju wkoll. Meta s-sufarelli suppost kienu pprojbiti mill-festi dawn kienu fuq it-trakkijiet tas-supporters. Biex ma nsemmix ukoll il-birra li tefghu fuq min kien ghaddej mill-front.
