From timesofmalta.com, beneath the story about how the Xaghra feast will go on as planned:

to those accusing the priest: Sorry to say, but I DO NOT AGREE with what you are saying. First of all, the church and those organizing fireworks are different organizations. Secondly, we paid thousand of euros, which were blown up like this, and now you’re asking for the feast to be cancelled as well, more thousand euros to be blown in vain too?? are you serious?? we will not be celebrating the death of these people mind you, but the birth of our lady!! we are a catholic village who celebrate feast with a religious aspect, unlinke most of your feast who swear, and celebrate feast with a very ateist side!!!

This have nothing to do with you, and please shut up and don’t come if you simply do not agree. Band marches will be different than usual and that’s for sure. But you don’t have any right to impose on our priest and tell him what to do?!!! who are you?!! neither the prime minister can tell him what to do.

I symphatize with the families involved!! You’ll never be forgotten, and the people of Xaghra will keep you in their heart and in their prayers

we paid thousand of euros, which were blown up like this, and now you’re asking for the feast to be cancelled as well, more thousand euros to be blown in vain too?? are you serious??

And then they say that we shouldn’t allow people in from alien cultures because we can’t understand them and they can’t understand us.

    Fifth fireworks victim believed dead

[Daphne – So now we’re going to count up five dead people because one of the four was pregnant. L-ewwel imaqdru tal-Gift of Life u imbaghad jaghmlu bhalhom ghax Saviour Balzan fl-ahhar se jfaqqas ta’ hamsin sena man-new wife meta mmissu isir nannu mhux daddy. Serial obsessive, that man: expect lots of Malta Today coverage of pregnancy issues and a sudden swing towards Paul Vincenti. ]

    • Norman Vella says:

Sorry to disappoint you but they’re not referring to the unborn child:

“The fifth victim in the tragic Gharb fireworks explosion, Raymond Farrugia, 35, is reported to have succumbed to his wounds. He was the son of factory owner Ninu Farrugia, and brother to Noel Farrugia, both of them dying instantly in the blast”.

[Daphne – You do disappoint me. I had hoped he would survive. Almost a whole family destroyed in one night – it doesn’t bear thinking about.]

Turns out that Malta Today was lying, got the facts wrong, or just jumped that gun. The man died at 3.30am this morning, several hours AFTER the leading lights of Maltese journalism announced his death:

With more than 70% burns it’s a question of when not if.

@ Norman Vella: why not ‘produce’ another Xarabank like the one on the control of the ‘festi’ , put again Fr Gouder as a punch bag with Ignatius, Marlene and company shouting at the top of their voices to keep this ‘delizzju/tradition’ uncontrolled.

I’m sure there will be enough shit to stir to keep the viewership high.

I noticed lately that no VIPs attended the funeral of the last Mosta victim. This could be a signal that they would not be treated like heroes.

From the side of the fireworks enthusiasts the message taken would be that they are working for the ungrateful when the big heads don’t participate in their funerals.

      • Dem-ON says:

        @John Schembri
John, maybe there is a chance that Marlene Pullicino may beat St. Paul with a second Damascene conversion, this time about the fireworks, after her u-turn on divorce?

  4. Andrew Borg-Cardona says:

Just on a point of logic: shouldn’t ALL festi be cancelled this weekend? They have as much of a connection with the dead as Xaghra.

  5. Rover says:

I am waiting for some clever dick to regale us with that old monstrous cliche: “they (that is the dead blown up people) would have wanted us to carry on with the village feast”. They wouldn’t want us to lose out on thousands of euros now, would they.

  6. Anthony says:

They can afford to blow hundreds of thousands of euros on dubious explosives and festas.

Very plausible given that everything is VAT neutral and hardly anyone pays income tax in Gozo. Good luck to them.

    Niccelebraw lil qaddis taghna!

Persuna tal-familja qed imut b’cancer u ftit passi l-boghod mid-dar tieghu qed jisplodu l-murtali tal-festa. X’jimpurthom li l-murtali u l-istorbju li jgibu maghhom jaf ikun ta’ tortura ghal certu nies specjalment ghal min hu marid.

Nahseb li l-qaddisin veru tpaxxihom il-kultura Maltija.

Mela kien hemm eluf ta’ euros ghan-nar li sploda, eluf ta’ euros jintremew jekk il-festa ta’ Xaghra ma ssirx, U L-IKTAR KONT li il-poplu ta’ Malta u Ghawdex li hallas (dilettant tan-nar u tal-festi jew mhux) kien dawk il-membri tal-protezzjoni civili, ambulanzi, militar, helikopters gejjin u sejrin bejn Malta u Ghawdex.

X’ nista naghmel jien biex dawn l-ispejjez ma nohrogx is-sehem tieghi ghax jien nigi nitmejjel mil-festi?

    • janet galea says:

I agree with pippo. They should start collecting money in Gozo not for future feasts, but as compensation to the state for all the expenses incurred.

    • Blue Rabbit says:

Mela il-familjari ma jhallsux talli jmorru jfittxuhom?

Niftakar meta kien hemm l-incident tas-Simshar, il-mara ta’ sid id-dghajsa ma riditx li javzaw minhabba li jekk johorgu jkollhom ihallsu l-ispejjez.

      Two ways, two measures?

[Daphne – Sea rescue is different, and she may have had other reasons for not wanting to alert the authorities.]

  9. Line Cert says:

It’s the same the world over though. The truth is, we’re only just animals and nobody really gives a damn about anyone else , unless iof course something affects themselves in some way. Look at the New Yorkers, still partying away soon after 9/11.
The rest of us “civilised people” are hypocrites and try to hide it, and feign sympathy, but the Gozitans don’t even try to hide their selfishness, probably they have no insight at all, or maybe they don’t give a damn. At least they’re fresh. Kudos to them. Truly an alien species.

  10. mark v says:

I believe that the church and government together should take a common stand. Ban fireworks from festas next year and see how it goes. Let’s not fool ourselves; fireworks have become a very profitable business – tax free, by the way.

    • ciccio2010 says:

The point is, fireworks are not used only in village festas. They are also used on state-sponsored occasions. And now we have the Malta Fireworks Festival in the annual cultural festival, sponsored by the government and others.

So how can the state take such a stand? I personally would not agree with such a stand. In my view, what needs to be done is proper regulation, including that by the industry itself.

NOTHING CAN BE ON ANY CONSOLATION TO YOU. BUT JUST FOR THE RECORD, MY FATHER COSTANTINO MIFSUD HAD DIED IN HIS FIREWORKS FACTORY 0N 24TH JULY 1981. THAT YEAR, THE ST. ELENA FEAST AT B’KARA HAD GONE ON AS PLANNED. 29 YEARS HAVE PASSED BUT THE PAIN IN OUR HEARTS IS STILL THERE. I DON’T USUALLY RESORT TO RUDE WORDS BUT A MALTESE SAYING GOES ‘IL-HAJ MAL HAJ U L-MEJJET IMUR JITN……K’

    • Anabelle Azzopardi says:

Helen, I am very sorry for your loss.

I lost my father three weeks ago, whilst we were on holiday in Malta. We had to bring him back in a box. He was only 48. The pain never goes away.

      • Helen Cassar says:

        Annabelle,
My heart goes out to you. It’s true the pain will never go away. Just relish the good memories.

    • ivanf says:

Helen, your father is still fondly remembered in Qala, Gozo. He used to produce fireworks for the St. Joseph feast. Id-Dahna Kulur ta’ Kustanz is still being proudly produced year in year out. I know it will not take away the pain, but hope it makes a difference. I might have some photos of him around-doing what he did best.

      • Helen Cassar says:

Thank you Ivan – comments like yours do make a difference. Yes I remember Alex, Freddie and the Qala feast as we used to accompany him. Happy memories like those bring some joy and a smile. I had posted the previous comment because I still feel that, out of respect, the Birkirkara feast should not have taken place, just three weeks after the accident. Thanks again.

Il-Padij ta’ Hal Luqa kien miet hu u jlesti xi nar ghal-Mosta fil-kamra tan-nar ta’ l-Ajkla. Li kien qed jaghmel kien ghal flus. Ma sarx luttu l-Mosta.

L-istess gara hawn. Il-luttu ma jsirx, ghax min kien qed jahdmu ma kienx mir-rahal u kien qed jaghmlu ghal-flus – jixtri u jbiegh ….u forsi kif qed jinkiteb jiftah.

    Dan hu l-iragunar wara d-decizjoni.

Ta’ min jinnota li dawn id-dizgrazzji qed jigru ftit qabel il-festa waqt l-ahhar preparamenti.

Ten people killed from fireworks explosions over the last 12 month or so is the equivilent of 2000 people dying in Germany. Can you imagine the national outrage that would cause, not to mention a massive overhaul of anything remotely linked to explosives. And here what do we do….? Well you all know the story.

Biss nghid li l-festi ghandhom jithassru meta tigri dizgrazzja bhal din. After all, min imut fl-ispluzzjonijiet tal-kmamar tan-nar ikun qed jahdem ghall-dawk li jhobbu l-festa.

Mela kemm ser idumu dawn in-nies jissograw hajjithom ghal nies tant ingrati?

    • RayBOND says:

Jien inhobb il-festi u partikolarment in-nar. Pero mhux kull min ihobb il-festa, ihobb in-nar…u vici-versa. In-nar illum il-gurnata jintalab mhux ghal festi religjuzi biss, jitolbu l-Gvern; l-Oppozizzjoni; tal-Lukandi; l-organizzaturi ta’ kuncerti; koppji li jkunu ha jizzewgu u ‘l bqija. Dan f’Malta, ghax barra l-uzu tieghu u bil-wisq aktar mifrux. Jigifieri ma nalludux ruhna li l-festi u l-qaddisin huma r-raguni li jsir in-nar, altru min hekk!

Wiehed irid izid ukoll li issa n-nar fil-festi, sar jinkludi spettakli akbar u isbah li jpaxxi anke l-eluf ta’ turisti li jigu jzurunha. Wiehed irid izid ukoll li l-maltin huma maghrufin mad-dinja kollha li ghandhom prodott tajjeb hafna w innovattiv fil-piroteknika u l-fatti juru li kull meta kkompetew mal-barranin, rebhu dejjem. Jigifieri pozittiv hemm ukoll fil-loghob tan-nar.

PERO dan ma jfissirx li jien kuntent bis-sitwazzjoni prezenti fejn jidhol dan il-mistjier u delizzju. Bhalissa s-sitwazzjoni hi allarmanti ferm u nkwetanti ghal kulhadd, ghal dawk li huma favur in-nar, daqskemm ghal min ma jhobbux. L-ewwelnett saru wisq incidenti f’qasir zmien. Barra dan, il-kagun taghhom hu aktar stramb mis-soltu. Issa mhux biss qed itiru l-kmamar waqt ix-xoghol tan-nar izda anke meta x-xoghol mhux jinhadem! X’qed jikkawza dan kollu ma tantx trid tkun espert biex tifhem ghax id-delettanti u min jahdem in-nar ilhom jafu! Alla jbierek issa l-awtoritajiet stembhu u ordnaw inkjesta li fost l-ohrajn tara li jigi analizzat il-materjal li jintuza ghal manifattura. Jien ili midhla tal-kmamar tan-nar u tal-Ghaqda Piroteknika fejn min jaf kemm il-darba konna prejokkupati bil-bicca tal-materjal. QATT ma sar xejn fil-konkret, la mill-gvern, la mil-kumitat tal-ghaqda u wisq anqas mill-puluzija.

Jista xi hadd jghidli kemm saru spezzjonijiet mill-puluzija fil-kmamar tan-Nar dis-sena? Kemm gew arrestati persuni li ma kellhomx licenza tan-nar A jew B u kienu fil-kumplessi tan-nar? Kemm gew imharka nies meta ma kienx hemm distanzi kif stipulati mill-Ligi biex jinharaq in-nar u meta gie mahruq f’hinijiet li mhux skond il-Ligi? Jista xi hadd jghid kif u min qed igorr in-nar fuq il-braken f’postijiet bhal tas-Sliema u lejn Ghawdex? Kemm qed jidhol nar illegali u legali min barra (mahdum) bhal dak tac-Cina u kemm dan hu safe?

Pero nahseb li l-akbar problema hi li min jahdem in-nar ghandu hafna pressjoni ta’ xoghol. Meta d-delettanti li jahdmu baqghu prattikament l-istess numru li kienu hamsin sena ilu, issa l-ispettakli li qed isiru specjalment lejliet il-festa bil-fire one, jitolbu ammont ferm akbar ta’ nar li biex jitlesta jrid isir sforz akbar. Barra minhekk, peres li l-materjal dejjem joghla fil-prezz, bosta kmamar tan-nar qed jahdmu aktar xoghol ghal festi ta’ rhula ohra kif ukoll ghall-okkazjonijiet li m’ghandhomx rabta ma festi tradizzjonali. Ma dan zid il-Festival tan-Nar Nazzjonali, issa ma’ tal-ajru zdied dak tal-art u l-partecipazzjoni f’kompetizzjonijiet barra min malta. Barra minhekk, issa mhux biss l-irhula li tradizzjonalment ghandhom il-kmamar tan-nar qed jaharqu hafna nar, pero anke ohrajn, specjalment f’Ghawdex, qed jaghmlu l-istess. Dan kollu ZGUR li qed ikollu konsegwenzi negattivi u nghid ukoll dizastruzi. Irid isir kontroll malajr kemm jista jkun biex ma jkomplix dan il-genn ta’ piki bla razan.

Jien jiddispjacini hafna ghal kull incident kawzat mil-piroteknika, specjalment kazi tragici. Dan ta’ l-ahhar f’Ghawdex hu tal-biza u jkexkixni, fejn familja tilfet bosta membri taghha b’dan il-mod. Jien naf ukoll li Ninu, li tieghu kienet il-kamra kien tal-affari tieghu fil-mistjier u anke min kien jahdem mieghu. Dan ghalihom ma kienx biss delizzju pero hobzhom ukoll. Wisq probabbli, ghalkemm kienu qed jahdmu xi nar meta gara l-incident, seta l-bidu tal-ispluzjoni kellu ragunijiet ohra u mhux tord taghhom! Pero xorta wiehed ma jistax jiskuza certi prattici li QATT MA KELLHOM ISIRU. Insemmi biss li t-tragedja ma kienet qatt tkun ta’ dak il-kobor kieku ma kienx hemm hazna kbira ta’ materjal mhux mahdum; kieku ma kienx hemm dawk l-ingenji mimlija nar mahdum min Malta meta n-nar lest mhux suppost jinzamm f’dawk il-kundizzjonijiet; filwaqt li l-mara bit-tarbija fil-guf qatt ma kellha tmur f’post perikoluz bhal dak. Issa li gara, gara u xejn ma jista jigi lura ghan normal, pero wiehed jittama li xi lezzjoni niehdu ghax ghalkemm in-nar sabih….il-hajja hi ferm isbah!!
