Has the cat got Joseph's tongue?

Published: February 22, 2011 at 12:48pm

Gaddafi, Mintoff and AST - back in the days when all of Europe bar Malta treated the first like a pariah, which is just what he deserved.

Joseph Muscat was very keen, last summer, to tell us all about his 90-minute meeting with Muammar Gaddafi, when he trotted along there with old Gaddafi acolyte Sceberras Trigona.

Maltastar was VERY impressed. Super One was in raptures. The coverage was wall to wall.

But now there’s silence. Presumably, Joseph and AST are glued to the drawing-board with that useless Marisa and the Poison Dwarf, wondering what best to say or whether silence might just be as golden as the years under Labour.

As for George ‘God Forbid We Should Join The European Union’ Vella, the foreign minister in Joseph’s kitchen cabinet, he is keeping his lips zipped as tightly as he did in court when asked to say what Ganni Psaila told him about the killing of Raymond Caruana.

Labour is trying (unsuccesfully) to cancel its dirty past from Maltese minds. Glorious past indeed.

I was never a keen admirer of Colonel Gaddafi, but why don’t you comment on the recent visit of our Prime Minister to Libya and embracing Gaddafi and inviting him to officially visit Malta. He was a friend until few days ago…. now we see him as !!!!

Do you remember the Gaddafi posters in the 70s celebrating his visits to Malta? What about those posters depicting a dark hand shaking a white hand with ‘blood brothers’ (or something to that effect) written underneath?

It’s ok to kick il-barrani tan-nemmex which is still obvious in Joseph Muscat’s absence on days commemorating the fallen but his lot didn’t mind brown-nosing THAT barrani. Remember the compulsory Arabic lessons at school and the green passports?

It was sad and so ironic to hear, on last night’s local news, Libyans taking part in the Malta protests angrily shouting of Gaddafi’s regime that (said in Maltese):

‘We can only buy clothes that he (Gaddafi) brings for us! The food we eat – only what he brings for us!’

You know I’m SURE I’ve heard that before somewhere!?

  12. Antoine Vella says:

THE HISTORY WE NEVER FORGET IT…WHY? IN THE BEGINNING OF PL GOVT AND HARD TIMES IN MALTA ,THAT PL HAD A GOOD RELATION WITH LIBYA ,PN ALWAYS SAY TO THE PEOPLE THAT PL IS FRIENDS OF AFRICAN GOATS !! AH SO AFTER 87 THEY TRY TO GET RID AND BE FRIENDS OF AFRICAN GOATS TOO….AH NOW IN MOMENT WITH THESE AFRICAN PROTESTS AGAINST THE DICTATORSHIPS OF THEIR OWN LEADERS , THEY CONDEMN THESE ESP TO LIBYA …..AH WHAT A HISTORY DEAR FRIENDS …NOW ARE ALSO FRIENDS WITH AFRICAN GOATS..SO THE PROVERB SAY DONT SAY NOTHING BEFORE THEY TELL YOU . WHAT A SENSE OF GOVT WE HAVE ? IPOCTRICY GOVT ….THATS MALTA MUST MAKE BECAUSE WE ARE THE SAME IN DICTATORSHIP MORE THEN 25 YEARS WITH THESE MISERABLE GOVT , HERE PEOPLE SAY THAT THEY HAVE TATTOOS,HIGH TEMPERAMENT ,RUDE PEOPLE ETC….AND WE DONT MAKE NOTHING ….EVEN A SILENT PROTEST …SO WE ARE HAPPY. Note to those who pasted those comments: it was your party that built those ties with Gaddafi in the first place. It was Mintoff who wanted Malta to end up like Libya. We have freedom, so stop deluding yourselves.

Imagine they decide to take to the streets and “overthrow” our government. How embarrassing would that be. Europe will laugh at them for being such babies and then criticise them for making a mockery of the serious events taking place in countries that actually have a dictator to overthrow.

  20. Riya says:

‘Gaddafi live on Sky, BBC and CNN right now’

Yes, reminds me of Mintoff’s and KMB’s rambling speeches, full of threats and no substance at all.

  21. Observer says:

Let me get this off my chest. How does KMB feel today, having saved Gaddafi’s life in 1986 when the Americans bombed Gaddafi’s house? What if Malta had not interfered?

That attack was aimed at a leader sponsoring terrorism through out Europe, killing innocent civilians such as the attack on Berlin night club.

Perhaps the world today would have been a much safer place if KMB hadn’t shot his mouth off. How do Labourites feel today seeing hundreds of Libyan people being butchered by Gaddafi’s henchmen when they know that it’s only thanks to one of their great leaders from the Golden Years that he’s still alive to have them killed?

Thanks to KMB and Co. we now are witnessing the bloodiest reprisals against protestors that we have seen so close to home. May Joseph Muscat enlighten us as to what he thinks about this glorious past. Or maybe his international secretary Alex Sceberras Trigona will do so instead.

Seems like it’s all over in Libya. It appears that the regime is in control and cracking down heavily on opponents. Sadly for the Libyan people it has ended like Iran for them. More pain and suffering is the only thing they can look forward to.

  25. C Falzon says:

On TVM news they interviewed some of the people coming in from Libya. What strikes me as odd is that the Maltese ones seemed to shrug it off reporting seeing only such things as a few burning skips, some noisy people and so on whereas the other nationalites looked shaken and described a far more serious situation.

Do we Maltese have a different way of seeing such things or what?

[Daphne – Yes. That’s why Mintoff could get away with what he did, and that’s why Karmenu Vella and those other hideous dinosaurs can make a comeback.]

Belgium granted €18 million of licences and Bulgaria €3.7 million. ” unquote

Can we please have some light on who in Malta actually was involved in shipping EUR79.7 worth of small arms to the Gaddafi regime?

  28. Dr Francis Saliba says:

There was an unfortunate, regrettable and reluctant “propping up” of the Ghaddafi oppressive dictatorship that was excusable (if not justifiable) for commercial and economic reasons .

Mintoff’s Malta had the unenviable distinction of propping up Ghaddafi additionally for ideological reasons as part and parcel of the MLP’s anti-American, anti Western and pro AAPSO stance.

We now must put on sack cloth and ashes and to beat our chest in sorrow and anger as this recipient of our “Gieh ir-Republika” slaughters his own countrymen with the aid of foreign mercenaries, whilst blaming everyone else.

Mintoff wanted integration with Britain, not independence.

[Daphne – Same old, same old Labour ‘reasoning’: lose an argument against somebody sharper and more well-informed than you are, and resort to childish taunts. I end up in court BECAUSE I’m truthful in what I write. ‘Dress in something respectable’: you mean ‘wear’ and not ‘dress in’. You get dressed, and from that moment on, you’re wearing your clothes. Then you undress. As for looking like a tart, you must have mistaken me for the magistrate. The trouble with you, I suspect, is that you think Malta’s appalling dress sense and lack of style is ‘respectable’. You obviously don’t get around much. Good luck.]
