How bizarre (but that's Labour for you)

The Labour Party has said NOTHING about the changes taking place in Egypt and Tunisia. No talk of hope for democracy. No talk about recognition of basic rights and freedoms. Nothing.

Just some Ganni ta’ Nuna market trader nonsense about how best to rip off the situation.

But then open the document which the Labour Party has distributed in conjunction with its current annual general conference, and you’ll find this bit about Alex Sceberras Trigona’s overtures in Tunis.

TUNEZIJA

Fil-bidu ta’ Novembru (1-4) s-Segretarju Internazzjonali attenda l-konferenza tal-partit Tunezin, Rassemblement Constitutionnel Democratique.

Il-proposta tas-Segretarju Internazzjonali biex jibdew jiltaqghu anki l-partiti tal-pajjizi 5 + 5 tal-Mediterran, li diga jiltaqghu regolarment f’qafas governattiv, sabet appogg issa anki fid-dimensjoni taz-zghazagh, kif artikolata, u anki sabiex tigi estiza f’kull dimensjoni ghal 6 + 6 li tinkludi lill-Grecja u lill-Egittu u anki ‘l quddiem lill-partiti Adrijatiku u anke fit-Turkija.

Dan il-qafas il-gdid ghandu jsahhah tassew l-isforzi diplomatic kemm governattivi kif ukoll parlamentari ghal aktar koperazzjoni, sigurta u sliem fil-Mediterran.

There, just like that, a description floating in time and space and with no mention of what has happened to Tunisia since.

BIZARRE.

But taken in view of Muscat’s unsound remarks about ripping off their tourism market, it’s more bizarre still.

The Rassemblement Constitutionnel Democratique is Ben Ali’s party.

The Labour Party’s conference notes do not say that on 17 January 2011, Socialist International, of which the Partit Laburista is a member, expelled the RCD.

And their Maltese member party is proposing that we seize the moment to make some money.
