Shocking, unbelievable and stinking of desperation: the Labour Party is now claiming that video footage of Karmenu Vella and fellow ministers assaulting Fenech Adami in parliament is 'manufactured'

Published: February 7, 2011 at 4:41pm

This is what the Labour Party’s official newspaper, KullHadd, said yesterday about the video footage of Karmenu Vella and other Labour ministers rushing across the floor in parliament to assault Fenech Adami and stop him speaking about the murder of Raymond Caruana and the shooting spree by – we found out 10 years later in court in 1997 – Karmenu Vella’s driver, among others.

Dawn il-filmati qed jinhadmu b’apparat modern bhal dak li ghandu NET Television, minn grupp ta’ nies maghrufa bhala Area 51. L-istess filmati qed jinhadmu b’mod inqas vulgari, imma bl-istess rizorsi u filmati u jitpoggew anke fuq is-sit tal-You Tube tal-Partit Nazzjonalista. L-agir ta’ dan il-grupp huwa responsabbli direttament ghalih Lawrence Gonzi.

Their thinking is straight out of China’s Cultural Revolution.

Thank heavens for the internet and for Daphne – so many things are coming to light and cannot be denied by the PL, try as they may. That accounts for their panic.

  2. ciccio2011 says:

The film strip showing the attack on Fenech Adami in Parliament has been on Youtube for many months.

In fact, someone had even posted a link here many months ago.

And I remember this event taking place live, back in the 80s.

A case of Labour rewriting history, indeed.

  3. Antoine Vella says:

After 1987, KMB told his supporters – and they believed it – that the PN had imported a machine that somehow turned MLP votes into PN ones inside the ballot box.

More recently we had “hundreds of voters” who, according to Anglu Farrugia, had been bribed by the PN to vote for them. And he had proof he assured us.

When you think about it, Labour leaders must think very poorly of their supporters if they expect them to swallow such fairy tales.

    • jenny says:

But they do swallow such fairy tales. It is amazing that they are so ignorant.

      • Anonymous Coward says:

It’s not really that amazing if you thought about it. Mintoff raised a generation of people who are convinced that (i) education is unimportant; and (ii) their welfare is the state’s responsibility, not theirs.

These people raised their children in the same sort of environment — hence the high rates of illiteracy in the “inner harbour areas” (cf. The Times, today I believe).

It is natural that people with such a mentality fall into the Labour fold, since Labour is the only reason the mentality exists in the first place.

Not sure how we can go about educating these people. Education seems to be the only way to break the cycle.

      • snoopy says:

What is amazing is the so called “floaters” (I would call them opportunists) who believe them.

    • Josephine says:

They’re measuring others by their own yardstick.

    • KUGIN IEHOR. says:

BUT guys, they each have a vote, damn it.

  4. Joe Micallef says:

When yesterday Karmenu Vella asked the media to let him be, was it a warning and threat?

  5. Angus Black says:

“…that the PN had imported a machine that somehow turned MLP votes into PN ones inside the ballot box”.

Their brain washing techniques are second to none.

    • David Buttigieg says:

What I recall, and I actually read it in one of their rags, and it was after the 1992 election, was that the some votes were printed with special ink so that Labour votes would turn Nationalist inside the ballot-box. Equally loony, of course.

  6. Andrew Borg-Cardona says:

So our memory of seeing this happen live is manufactured as well?

  7. H.P. Baxxter says:

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party plays silly buggers over divorce, Pullicino Orlando and John Dalli, when they could be tearing the MLP to shreds without breaking into a sweat.

  8. obzerver says:

Though I read, enjoy and agree with all your blog posts, without feeling the need to comment as my feelings are usually the same as yours or other commentators, I would like to point out that this article from ‘KullHadd’ was much longer and the paragraph extracted was following a paragraph explaining how the PN machine is trying to tarnish Joseph Muscat (not Karmenu Vella) with edited videos posted on YouTube.

[Daphne – There is a link to the entire article somewhere in this stream of comments. The videos are not edited. You cannot edit a video to make people run across the floor in parliament and assault the leader of the opposition, unless they are suggesting that these are all digital figures a la Chicken Run.]

Well done on the rest of the blogs which give people like me more info about the pre-80s political era.

I wish all Journalists had the ‘balls’ to write and dig up all there is to know.

  9. La Redoute says:

    Manufactured, eh?

Well, if this were their zmien helu all over again, all importation of similar videos would be banned.

    These people are nuts.

  10. Thaddeus says:

Could somebody please post a link to this video?

Imma tal-Labour ghandhom time machine fenomenali. Jghaddu s-snin, imma line-up jibqa’ il-cabinet Mintoffjan. Qishom l-irjus preservati ta’ Futurama.

      • ciccio2011 says:

Baxxter, I agree with you that Labour have a phenomenal time machine. They use it “biex jghaddu z-zmien bin-nies.”

  12. GiovDeMartino says:

It was Nationallist supporters who murdered Raymond Caruana so that Labour would get the blame. Isn’t it obvious? They burned down their own kazini for the same reason – a small price to pay for electoral victory.

Then they went and provoked Labour supporters at tal-Barrani, put on a disguise and sacked the Curia and the Law Courts. They even burned down The Times so that Mintoff would get the blame. They went for the Malta Union of Teachers and even ripped the earrings out of Mrs Fenech Adami’s ears when they ransacked her home.

There is no end to the sly cunning of those Nationalists.

  13. g says:

Not sure who is “nuts” – 50% of the population do believe these crazy claims, even though they saw the same thing we did 20 years ago.

    Weep …….in despair and shame.

  14. geek says:

Did this “grupp ta’ nies maghrufa bhala Area 51” hack the top-ranking site Malta Today?

[Daphne – No, it was Mubarak’s supporters who did that.]

  15. Alfred Bugeja says:

    Here goes Thaddeus…

Karmenu Vella is wearing a brown suit.

    • R Camilleri says:

To whom was Eddie Fenech Adami shouting “Barra”?

[Daphne – Colonel John Cachia, head of the armed forces at the time, who entered parliament to challenge Fenech Adami at that point.]

      • EJGATT says:

When the head of the armed forces of a country enters parliament, it is considered a coup d’etat and that was why Eddie Fenech Adami was shouting for him to get out of there.

I have the video of Eddie Fenech Adami’s whole speech that evening (downloaded from YouTube). It was a historic speech in the sense that it changed the course of history in Malta.

      • willywonka says:

It is not considered to be a coup d’etat…but a breach of parliamentary privilege.

  16. Pepe` says:

Rewriting history is one thing. These guys want to re-film it.

  17. willywonka says:

You’re all acting horrified at the explanations given by Kullhadd and everything, and you’re probably not realising that young people would actually believe what they’re saying.

And it doesn’t make any difference that these would be idiots to believe something like that….they’re votes all the same.

  18. R Camilleri says:

    ‘fuq is-sit tal-You Tube tal-Partit Nazzjonalista’

By any chance, did the PN buy You tube?

  19. mario lanza says:

  20. liberal says:

    Can we have non-political posts?

  21. Cannot-Resist-Anymore says:

Is it just me or have others noticed as well that Wenzu Mintoff seems to have dug himself into a political grave?

I have not heard of him or from him for a long time. Let’s hope Joseph Muscat does not resurrect him as yet another ghoul from their past if he is gone.

I wonder what is going on.

    • TROY says:

Maybe he’s caring for his ailing father at St.Vincent .

      • Josephine says:

You’re not up to date. Mintoff is to-ing and fro-ing between his home (not San Vincenz de Paule) and Mater Dei.

Maybe it’s something to do with the funds he’d have to hand over should he opt to live at San Vincenz.

      • red nose says:

Duminku Mintoff is NOT Wenzu Mintoff’s father but his uncle

  22. Hot Mama says:

I guess all the memories I have of the 80s are all manufactured. All righty then!

  23. d.farrugia says:

Wenzu Mintoff is on One Radio with a programme similar to the one that Manuel Cuschieri had, Tajjeb Li Tkun Taf.

  24. anthony says:

This is the first time I have known the PL publicly admitting that it is ashamed of its murky past. What a relief to see they have some insight left.

A few seconds of video footage and off they go into panic mode with the resultant puerile spin that the video is faked. Yes, the film is original and untouched. I was around with wide-open eyes then and still am. I still have my wits about me.

Violence, then, started in parliament perpetrated by Labour MPs. It was they who set the example for the marmalja to emulate. How demeaning.

No wonder they are so ashamed.

A new beginning really. Same Old Labour. Same old lies.

  25. VR says:

…… and in good time they are going to get in, on the strength of votes from those whose lives were made hell by them in the 1980s, and also from those who don’t seem to mind that they worked so hard to keep them out of the EU.

  26. John F. says:

How about the Leader’s closing speech at the general conference?

“Il-prodott.” I like this word. He’s so limited even in his vocabulary that he couldn’t find a better one.

He said that Maltese families today will do all they can to buy their children their PRODOTT, see how they dig hard in their pockets to take them out once a week (didn’t specify whether for pizza or steak) and do the acrobatics to take them on an annual trip abroad.

Ah, at least it is not such doom and gloom, after all, Dr.Muscat. Oh by the way, he told all and sundry that to achieve this the FAMILJA MALTIJA qieghdin jieklu minn gewwa and hence their standard of living is going down.

    Bollocks!

So how is it that bank deposits keep soaring year after year and all the bonds are taken up with hours?

Not to mention the new cars, laptops, mobiles and what have you. Give us a break, Joseph Muscat.

  27. P Shaw says:

Area 51? They are still stuck in 1981- 1987 mindset when the number 51 represented the majority of votes obtained in the 1981 election. Thirty years have passed since then.

At the time the MLP came out with the story of ‘Tal-Gakketta Blu”, claiming that this group tried to carry out a coup d’etat. Evarist was right, the more they change the more they remain the same – the same old idiotic stories are recycled over and over again.

  28. dudu says:

    Minjaf Marisa Micallef x’tibghat C.V.s mad-dinja kollha bil-mod kif sejrin l-affarijiet fil-PL.

  29. Cannot-Resist-Anymore says:

Listen to Bondiplus now and you will know why Labour cannot be trusted.

They may have trimmed the moustache of the Deputy Leader for Parliamentary affairs but his hdura is still there….

    • Jelly Bean says:

According to Anglu Farrugia, Lawrence Gonzi is another David Copperfield who can make the EMPIRE STATION disappear.

Or maybe he’s too obsessed with power stations.

  30. Herbie says:

This is what the famous ‘reconciliazzioni’ has got us to.

Proceedings against that awful officer, who for his political allegiance was promoted to colonel and put in charge of the combined police and army, for barging into the House of Representatives to attack the then leader of the opposition, Dr Fenech Adami, were dropped by the Fenech Adami government.

His action was tantamount to a coup d’etat. Lorry Sant too was pardoned and he had the nerve to boast that he had not asked for any pardon.

Police officers responsible for torture and other atrocities were retained in the force and even promoted.

So why should we be surprised that these cockroaches are coming out of the woodwork and trying to rewrite history to hide away their dark past?

It is also no wonder that a lot of the younger generation are not aware of what went on in those dreadful years.
This coupled with the PN’s autogoals is what will probably get us Muscat as prime minister in two years’ time.

  31. drewsome says:

Growing up in the 70s and 80s was an interesting experience, to say the least.

I remember when power and water were erratic at best. “Waiting lists” abounded, for services and items we take for granted today, with the resultant rampant favouritism, corruption and bribery.

I remember a command economy limiting our choice of products to mostly crap local monopolies – “kutrabandu” boomed accordingly as we all salivated at the thought of a mere Mars bar, thoughtfully and profitably supplied by the you-know-who’s at the you-know-where’s of the day.

But most of all I remember the fear, the intimidation, the sense of helplessness, the beatings, the violence, the filthy fundamental rottenness of that regime in denying us the most basic rights and freedoms. And it was a regime in every sense. State-controlled broadcasting, wide ministerial powers, beatings, arbitrary arrests, requisitioning,……….

“Manufactured footage”, my ass. It was a shameful, undignified, disgusting exhibition by the same clingers paraded by the Moviment Gdid. It epitomises all that these persons represent to me.

  32. ciccio2011 says:

While Karmenu Vella busily writes the electoral programme, Joseph and his party are busily re-writing history.

    • maryanne says:

He will not be writing the programme. It will be in atlas form and titled: Roadmap for Malta – Back to the Future. The latest buzzword is roadmap.

Ara veru t-tifel ta’ Alfred Sant (politikament). A lot of empty words and promises and cliches.

      • ciccio2011 says:

Back to the Future indeed, Maryanne. They will give their back to the future and will look straight back to the 1970s.
As for the roadmap, haven’t they heard about GPS and satellite navigation systems?

Dawn kienu affarijiert ta’ kulljum. Jien naf ghax kont inkun fejn il-parlament kuljum.

Dak iz-zmien il-hajja hekk kienet, fost il-gimgha fejn il-parlament jew il-kazin tal-PN, u nhar ta’ Hadd imorru ghall-meetings ghax billi kienu jsawtuna qatt ma bzajna.

Anke meta qallbu l-karrozzi tad-deputati Nazzjonalisti manufactured ukoll. Isthu!

Dan hu l-partit il-gdid ta’ Joseph Muscat.

U meta sparaw fuqna il-pulizija gewwa ir-Rabat u bdew jidhlu warajna god-djar tan-nies manufactured ukoll?

U meta Lorry Sant qasam il-kamra u mar ghal Dr. Fenech Adami wara l-istragi ta’ tal-Barrani. Dan ghax kien qabdu jghid fuq ir-radio tal-pulizija, waqt li ahna konna fi triq Tal-Barrani u bdew jisparaw fuqna, jaghti struzzjonijiet lil tal-helicopter illi jekk in-nies feruti kienu BLUE il-helicopter ma kellux jinzel u u jassisti anzi kellu jhallihom fl-ghelieqi jsofru hemm.

Din manufactured ukoll? Halluna ja qatta giddibien. Intkom toboghduna.

    • Naf persuna li niesha kellhom jitilqu minn Malta dak iz-zmien. Kienu marru l-Awstralja bhala immigranti illegali, biex tghaxxaq.

Kienet pjuttost komuni l-bicca. Kienu taparsi jitilghu holiday u mbaghad joghsfru. Illum din il-persuna regghet qieghda Malta (ilha hawn min-1991). Jekk issemmilha dawn l-affarijiet tghidlek li dan kollu ghadda u mar u ma nistghux nibqghu nghixu fl-imghoddi.

Il-punt tieghi hu li thambaq kemm thambaq jekk ma tkunx ghixt dawk iz-zminijiet ta’ genna fuq l-art *ahem* qatt ma tista’ tifhem il-biza’ u dwejjaq li kien hakimna bhala pajjiz. Ghal nies li ma jiftakru xejn minn dan qishom qed jaraw l-irvelli tal-Egittu u t-Tunizija fuq it-television.

Min qatt jista’ jinsa dak il-Hadd fil-ghodu fl-ewwel faccata ta’ Il-Mument tqum u tara ritratt ta’ ragel – Raymond Caruana – minxur ma l-art mahsul bid-demm? Jew, l-ghada tal-Barrani, dak ir-ritratt ta’ dik il-mara li kienu gidmulha mnehirha? (GIDMULHA MNEHIRHA ta. Lanqas l-annimali).

Jew ghax tkun tmur skola tal-Knisja, malli tinzel mill-karozza tal-linja, girja wahda sad-dar ghax jekk jaqbduk iqattghulek l-uniformi u jisirqulek il-basket?

Sa ftit zmien ilu dawn kienu affarijiet li tiftakar fihom, ixxengel tnejn rasek u tghid “Kif konna nghixu dak iz-zmien, hux?”

Illum ma baqghetx hekk. Meta tara n-nies li regghu qed jitfaccaw fuq quddiem tal-Labour jaqbdek il-bard u terga tiftkar minn xiex kienu ghaddewna.

Dan l-ahhar ghaddieli hsieb. Min jaf jekk l-ghazla ta’ Joseph Muscat (li, incidentalment, niftakru l-iskola waqt dak iz-zmien glorjuz) kinitx orkestrata biex jirnexxilhom jitfghu sieqhom gol-bieb?

Nghjiduha kif inhi dawn grieden xjuh, lil Joseph Muscat idahhluh u johorguh mill-but minghajr lanqas biss ikun jaf x’laqtu.

Mela haseb li l-pulizija ghada bhal fiz-zmienu fejn jekk ma tkunx Laborist ma tidholx fil-korp?

Int taf sew, Anglu, x’kien jigri fi zmienek. Ghax avolja tkun Laborist jekk ma ssawatx lin-Nazzjonalisti ma tihux promozzjonijiet, jew taqla xi xeba minghand shabek il-pulizija stess.

Ghax ma tghidx li fi zmienek il-Laboristi kriminali anqas biss kienu jigu arrestati. U int dan tafu sew.

Lil Daphne mort tarresta? Ghax ma mortx tarresta lil Piu Camilleri? Le hux? Ja korrot ghax minn dejjem kien habib tieghek.

Ara x’pulizija kellna. Int tiftakar, Anglu, li ahna in-Nazzjonalisti konna nidhlu id-depot bic-certifikat tat-tabib biex it-tabib ikun jaf li dhalna id-depot qawwijin u shah biex forsi ma jsawtuniex.

Int trid titkellem fuq x’kien jigri fil-korp tal-pulizija? Ara veru int bniedem oxxen. Ghidilna x’ghamiltulu lin-Nardu Debono meta sawwatuh sa kemm qtiltuh gewwa id-Depot.

Bdejtu tidhlu tnax, tnax issawtuh gewwa l-ufficju ta’ Nestu Spiteri ‘Room 7′. Anke dawk il-pulizija li kienu fuq ghal xi lectures dakinhar bdew jidhlu u jsawtuh u fl-ahhar spicca mejjet u armejtuh fil-wied tac-cawsli.

Ikteb il-history tal-pulizija fiz-zmien il-Labour, Anglu. Int tafha sew. Issa meta jigi ic-cans niktiblek l-istorja taz-Zebbugin li kienu iddefendew ruhhom gewwa l-kazin ta’ Haz-Zebbug. Ghax dik int tafa sew. Kemm kontu tafu tinvestigaw, Alla jbierek.

‘To whom was Eddie Fenech Adami shouting “Barra”?’

Colonel John Cachia, the head of the armed forces, went to parliament to threaten the leader of the Opposition who had been speaking about him. Fenech Adami said that when Colonel Cachia went to Tal-Barrani in the evening, to see what was happening (a mass demonstration of anti-government protestors was under attack by thugs and the police), the thugs had begun to shoot at the colonel from behind their makeshift barricades but the colonel behaved as though nothing was happening.

Instead of reacting to being shot at, Colonel Cachia reacted to Fenech Adami talking about it in parliament.
