The progressive Moviment Gdid tal-Labour begins to speak about Libya

Published: February 23, 2011 at 10:29am

And the first to do so, natch, is one of the brontosauruses who have taken over: Joe Grima, with a spectacularly racist comment.

“Il-poplu Libjan m’ghandux il-kultura li ghandu il-poplu Ewropew…. Dawn huma nies differenti.”

– Joe Grima, PBS news bulletin, yesterday night

Presumably he meant that Libyan people are happy to be blasted to bits or cower in their homes because they’re ruled by a madman.

0933: More on that resignation in Libya. “I resigned from the Gaddafi Foundation on Sunday to expressdismay against violence,” Reuters quoted Youssef Sawani as saying in a text message to one of its correspondents. Mr Sawani was executive director of the foundation, which had been Saif al-Islam’s – Col Gaddafi’s son – chief means of wielding influence.

0929: Support for Libya’s Col Gaddafi seems to be haemorrhaging further. Reuters news agency says that a senior aide to the Colonel’s son, Saif, resigned today.

Joe Grima – really very thick skinned. He likes to see himself on the screen – but how old he really looks. Good for the next “Tas-Serh Labour Cabinet”.

Damage on nearby buildings shows they were widely used.” There were reports several days ago that Libyan security forces had used anti-aircraft artillery against protesters there.

Ah! That’s why the Labour government of the 70s forced a whole generation of Maltese students to study Arabic language and culture. It was Labour’s way of creating a multi-cultural Maltese society. Now I get it.

On a silghtly different note: Malta has a history of decorating the ‘right kind’ of people. Let’s not forget our glorious university conferred an honoris causa to … Nicolae Ceauşescu.

Another two Libyan embassy guards quit: protesters
Another two security guards of the Libyan embassy quit their posts this morning and walked out of the embassy.

Their departure was greeted by applause and cheers by a small group of anti-Gaddafi protesters who had gathered outside the embassy.

Another three security officials left the embassy on Monday.

The latest defectors came out carrying bags and according to the protesters, they are going straight to Libya to be with their families.

Joe Grima – very stupid comment. It’s not il-poplu Libyan’s fault that they haven’t got ‘il-kultura li ghandu il-poplu Ewropew’. They were never given the chance to have it in the first place because of who they are protesting against.

1134: More on those reports that mercenaries are being used in Libya against protesters. Libya analyst George Joffe, from the Centre for International Studies at Cambridge University, says the origins of the force go back to the 1980s, when Col Gaddafi argued that Libya should be open to anyone who was Muslim. “What are now described as foreign mercenaries are, in fact, people brought into Libya as part of the regime’s ideological awareness of its wider Muslim dimension and they’re now being used against the Libyan people themselves,” Mr Joffe told the BBC.

Report exposes Italy and Malta as top EU arms exporters to Libya

Brussels – Libya has received hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of arms from the European Union, with Italy and Malta emerging as the bloc’s top exporters, according to a report doing the rounds in Brussels on Wednesday.

The report, which was first published by the EU in January but had gone largely unnoticed, came to the fore as Moamer Gaddafi’s regime was attracting worldwide condemnation for quashing anti-government protests by killing hundreds of civilians.

According to the EU’s latest annual report on arms exports, which refers to 2009, the bloc’s member states granted 343 million euros’ (470 million dollars’) worth of export licences to Libya.

The document noted that actual arms exports to Libya amounted to 174 million euros, but warned that figures were incomplete.

Malta emerged as the second-largest exporter, having authorized the sale of an 80-million-euro consignment of small arms.

I travelled to Libya many times during the time of the Lockerbie-related sanctions.

The hardest-hit people were the least privileged and the foreign workers. The regime used the sanctions as a cover-up for its incompetencies and inefficiencies. This article by Simon Jenkins captures the gist of what sanctions are really all about.
