Libya: Protesters Killed As Army Opens Fire
Alex Crawford in Zawiyah, and Adam Arnold
At least thirty people have been killed and dozens injured after the army opened fire on protesters in the Libyan city of Zawiyah, residents have reported.
Although the facts cannot be verified, it is thought pro-Gaddafi forces entered the city and fired at around 60 protesters, who then returned fire.
A number of people were shot, including a rebel commander who was killed. This then set off another march of thousands of people, many of whom were unarmed, who were subsequently shot at by the military.
Many of the demonstrators were shot in the head, neck and chest.
The western port city, which is about 30 miles from the capital Tripoli, has been surrounded by the dictator’s security forces.

Listen to the live news report from eyewitness Alex Crawford, here: she saw people die, and is right now in a hospital which she describes as “mayhem”, with even the doctors crying and asking her to get the news out.

Yes, I watched this and was horrified. Also watched BBC World Service and one of the protestors told John Simpson that they “are ready to take a bullet to the chest” for Libya.
Commissioner John Dalli, just shut up and resign if there is any decency left in you. You have become an embarrassment to all decent citizens.
I heard it all, especially the heartbroken appeal for help from the West, by the Libyan doctor, (who was next to Alex Crawford), to help the innocent, young and brave Libyans from being slaughtered. I must say that his words brought tears to my eyes as I tried to visualise the scene that was unfolding in front of them.
Nah! That’s just ketchup…
I guess mustard will be next
19:45 Human rights group Amnesty International has alleged that pro-government forces fired on medical staff in the town of Misrata on Thursday. Two Red Crescent workers were apparently injured in what Amnesty called “a deliberate attack on medical professionals”.” http://www.libyafeb17.com/
20:15 Al Jazeera Eyewitness states that Az Zawiya is in need of medical supplies and baby milk. There are also confirmed reports that the injured have been kidnapped from hospitals and streets. http://www.libyafeb17.com

I must say I do not understand E.U. Reasoning. Can anybody tell us why of all the places this meeting was held in Finland. This country the most northerly in europe is really the least interested about the refugees and illigal immigrants question. Why not held in Malta at least we are in the very heart of all that is happenning. No I suppose this would give us some importance. Poor us I feel we are only being used by the E.U. We have ourselves focused as the nearest land to this tragedy. In three months time we would be feeling the effect in tourism. If I saw what is happening in Malta I would’nt take my family for a holiday there; I want have peace of mind.
This is not an EU meeting. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is in Finland for an extraordinary meeting of heads of state and government of the European Peoples’ Parties.
The Gaddafi Regime Is Legitimate So Sned THem back OK!

Despite what seems to be morally right – Malta had no right whatsoever to hold those planes. they are the property of the Libyan Government and the Gaddafi Regime is still the legitimate Government whether we like it or not. I really beleive we have shot ourselves in the foot with this move. the scenario of Gaddafi somehow managing to survive is already not as laughable as it was a few days back. Just imagine what it would mean to us if he were to stay … bye to all the investment and the work our businessmen have been doing there all with one careless move from our PM .
And before signing that petition – just think about what that could mean – do we want to encourage more fighter planes landing in Malta do we ?
No, the government did the right thing. I don’t quite understand those who reason like you do. Malta is being slaughtered for allowing the transhipment (they never entered the country) of eight million euros worth of handguns but the same people who go on about this then harry the government to return the Mirage fighter jets to Gaddafi lest he take revenge on us.
That was sarcasm. The quote itself was from timesofmalta.com
John Dalli, I never thought very much of you in the first place, but today you stooped to new lows.
Shame on you for more or less sticking up for a dirt-bag like Gaddafi, but people like you don’t know what shame is, and anyway, they say that birds of a feather flock together. You never know, your buddy Muammar might be interested in buying some of the soap your brother brought in, but then didn’t it come from Libya in the first place?
Do not forget it is Carnival.
They love dressing up as corpses over in Libya.
Georg Sapiano posted this comment beneath the report about John Dalli on timesofmalta.com.
“No where in his speech, as reported, did Mr.Dalli condemn Gaddafi whilst major world leaders have condemned his acts of extermination directed at the Libyan people. Neither does Commissioner Dalli deny having business interests in Libya. As always, John Dalli confirms the perception in his regard: Profits not Principles. All his attempts at playing the suffering lamb, never credible, collapse when he makes this sort of speech.”
Something entirely unexpected – for me at least. I’ve just seen Joe Grima speaking out unequvocally against Gaddafi.
But my god, his dandruff. It was only in the last few minutes that somebody thought to take a brush to him.
You can always trust Joe Grima to swing where the wind blows. Last week Gaddafi was great because he made Malta’s social services possible by giving Mintoff millions to keep us enchained to his dictatorship.
But tonight Gaddafi was an ‘arukaza’ because he’s killing his own people.
He used to kill them even back in the days when he addressed Labour mass meetings, Joe. You just never bothered to look, ghax ma kienx jaqbillek. L-aqwa li taghkom il-flus ghal children’s allowance.
The one absolute truth I have learnt in my life is that you get absolutely nowhere being reasonable with shite.
Anything goes as long as his pockets are lined with cash, crawling over corpses to stuff them even more.
What a brave people!
Facing an enemy equally armed, one would stand a chance.
To face a fully armed enemy, practically unarmed is, to say the least, heroic.
Gaddafi has become the Hitler of the 21st century and the sooner he is eliminated the better for the whole world.
With apologies to John Dalli.
The west swore ‘never again’ after the genocide in World War II. Then we took too long to intervene in ex-Yugoslavia, and we watched on as genocide happened in Sudan and Rwanda. Now as we all discuss and chat, genocide is happening again, this time on our doorstep.
What the hell are our leaders waiting for to enforce the no-fly zone that the rebels are asking us to enforce? Again we are dragging our feet as people are being massacred.
Such a shame when our PM worked so hard under difficult circumstances to have a twerp wanabee PM like John Dalli coming out with his ridiculous comments.
Kemm kienet ghazla tajba li l-Prim ministru tal-lum huwa Dr. Gonzi. Immaginaw li kieku ghandna Prim lil John Dalli. Kieku x’kienet tkun il-pozizzjoni tieghu? X’kien jaghmel differenti minn Lawrence? Ta’ min jahseb fuqu dan li qed nghid.
While we bicker about John Dalli – people are being massacred in Libya. For heaven’s sake do not let bureaucracy delay the one and only remaining thing to do – go in with FORCE and get Gaddafi before he consolidates his position.
