"If they kill us all, the west will have blood on its hands. They do not believe in freedom. They are cowards."

In The Guardian’s online edition, this evening:

The revolutionary leadership promised a fight to the death but some Benghazi residents were fleeing to the Egyptian border last night amid considerable bitterness at the failure of western countries to back up vocal support for the rebels with practical help, including a no-fly zone and military equipment to fight Gaddafi’s better armed forces, some of them trained by the British army.

“They have betrayed us,” Ahmed Malen, one of the revolutionary volunteers pasting anti-Gaddafi posters on walls in Benghazi. “If they kill us all, the west will have blood on its hands. They do not believe in freedom. They are cowards.”

Meanwhile, in The New York Times today:

“Military intervention is not the solution,” said the German foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle . “We do not want to get sucked into a war in North Africa and we would not like to step on a slippery slope where we all are, at the end, in a war.”

(…)
Meanwhile, in an interview with the German television station RTL on Tuesday, Colonel Qaddafi praised the position of Germany and said Libya would trade with it in the future for oil, but that otherwise, “the West is to be forgotten.” He said Libyan oil contracts would go “to Russian, Chinese and Indian firms.

Seems like the Gaddafis had bank rolled Sarkozy’s election and they’re threatening to publish all the receipts

Heads should roll on this grandstanding.

[Daphne – 1. You have Saif Al Islam’s word, and you take it. 2. What would be worse – take Gaddafi’s money and keep silent about Gaddafi, or not to let that money stop you doing the right thing? Grandstanding, my eye.]

I’m just forwarding a new piece of information. I don’t believe Saif Al Islam and I don’t take Sarkozy’s word for anything. After all he was embroiled in another election funding scandal with Madame l’Oreal…
