On Sky News right now, they’ve broken down the action plan for the coming days.
First the roll of honour: the flags of those countries who are participating in military action, everyone from Spain to Qatar.
And then the roll of shame: the flags of those countries that Libya felt comfortable inviting in to observe its ‘ceasefire’ – Malta, Germany, China and Turkey.
Our government has blown it: wrong side of history, il-qahba ta’ Gaddafi right up to his dying day. What are Lawrence Gonzi and Tonio Borg planning to do now – throw themselves onto Gaddafi’s pyre?
They’d better work on a plan B for dealing with the resentment of the National Council in Benghazi, when they resume travelling to Libya to further the national cause which they are currently busily engaged in scuppering.
“Sorry, ta, we didn’t help you because we wanted to stay out of it. I hope you don’t mind. We did our bit by helping non-Libyans to get out.”

Reminds me of the bad old days when people used to believe that Malta was official Gaddafi territory.
I don’t feel shame. I feel great anger and frustration. I hope Malta will rethink its position and offer assistance in the form of logistics at least.
Let’s burn our passports in protest. In front of Castile. I’m serious.
Too late. We’ve already dumped the Gaddafi-green ones.
No, I mean we should burn our passports as a political statement: I hate what my country is doing.
That sort of thing.
Symbolism? I note you’ve removed your petition to have Gaddafi stripped of his Maltese honours. Why?
No I didn’t remove it. It’s still where it always was:

Small man thinks big: Frans Sammut wants to position Malta next to communist China – comment on timesofmalta.com

Frans Sammut
One looks forward to seeing Malta take part in such a peace-making exercise. Not only would it confirm Malta’s disposition towards such laudable contributions to peace but it would notably affirm our deserved presence among much bigger nations harbouring similar laudable intent.
This is happening in our immediate neighbourhood. We cannot take the dishonourable and cowardly way out and hide behind that neutrality clause in order to shirk our duty. Once this crisis is over, we will be held in low regard. Mr Prime minister, please re-think your position.
Burn our passports in front of Castile? The government would love that contribution to its revenue.
Then what are we to do? Honestly, the number of times I’ve felt a deep shame and anger at my own country. Maltese citizenship is not something you can resign from. So what is left to us? I hate my country and I cannot do anything about it.
Exactly my thoughts.
Gallantry translates as “Nobility of spirit or action”. When exactly did we lose our moral compass?
Was it the day we allegedly waved goodbye to “foreign oppressors” or was it the day we refused to stand up for what is right and help defend our neighbour in a real time of need?
Maybe someone will explain to our PM that inaction today will only serve to negatively affect how others perceive the Maltese from this day forth.

Mohammed Nabous started up Al Hurra, an online channel, to show what is happening in Libya. He was killed this morning by a sniper in Benghazi. This is an appeal from his widow to keep the channel going.
Svizzera fil-Mediterran …. imma bil-kliem differenti
When Gaddafi is toppled and the anti-Gaddafi fighters move into Tripoli. The embassy of Malta will be one of the first to be stormed and destroyed in revenge. Malta will deserve it.
Gonzi take note, you betrayed the Maltese people.
The longer-lasting effect is that so many will live with the disgrace not of what Malta has done, but of what it has failed to do.
Madonna x misthija! Anyone heard the Sky News interview with Tonio Borg? We are being accused of showing solidarity with Gaddafi’s regime. Then he waffles in reply.
Run, rabbit run run run – il-vera kaz.
I personally do not feel that Malta should be engaged in any military assistance.
You must be neutered, not neutral.
Daphne have you just heard Tonio Borg interviewed on Sky News? I never felt so embarrassed to be Maltese. I just want to cry.
They just interviewed Tonio Borg live on Sky News. I have to say that I am very disappointed.
Not only are his communication skills poor, but he has not convinced anyone about Malta’s position in respect of Libya. Alas, it seems that the Maltese Government’s position is purely opportunistic.
From what I hear on Sky News, we have become the laughing stock of the region and the EU, and they ARE cheesed off at us in a big way.

Perhaps this is what the PM had in mind during yesterday’s press conference. But Lawrence Gonzi, aided and abetted by Tonio Borg, has missed the bus.
This is what opposition MPs shouted at Neville Chamberlain, another fervent supporter of appeasement, during a parliamentary debate in the Commons in May 1940 during the Nazi attack on Norway.
X’misthija ta’ vera. Bla bajd.
Thank you, Daphne. At least one sane voice in all this madness.
And you don’t even realise that this ‘roll of honour’ is as much a charade as the ones the Soviets used to dish out on Programma Bremya and Pravda.
Tal-biki! Qiskom dawk il-miljuni ta’ Germanizi li capcpu lil Hitler ghax qallhom li l-Amerikani u r-Russi riedu jahkmuhom.
Ok, Kev. Spell it out. If it were solely up to you, what would you do about Gaddafi?
First, La Redoute, you need to tell me why Gaddafi was propped up by the West for so long before hearts started to bleed so profusely.
Business pragmatism, you say? But is that how it works?
You know, so-called ‘conspiracy theorists’ were confused by what initially seemed like a procrastinating West: ‘this is the trigger, why are they not biting?’
But now it is all clear. Soon the focus will move to another hot-spot in the same region, for this is not just about Gaddafi. And if you think that democratisation is the intended endgame you ‘re going to be surprised.
I would have supported the ousting of dictators worldwide had it been a genuine exercise in democratisation and not a missionary quest to unfold the so-called ‘new world order’, unveiled by Bush Snr. in the early 90s, parroted by various heads of state thereafter, but never really explained to the public.
Illalla Kev, qisek Tristram Shandy kemm iggibha bit-tul.

And after the dust has settled, we’ll have the cheek to expect help from the same nations if we have a humanitarian crisis.
I’ve just about heard enough about Malta experiencing a humanitarian crisis. You’d imagine that hundreds of thousands of people had turned up at our door, like they did in Tunisia and in Egypt, countries that have massive problems of their own right now.
Kurragg nies! Ahna dejjem ma’ min qed jirbah.
A change of tide dictates a change of policy … shameless!

At least the PM can console himself with the knowledge that he has Joseph Muscat’s approval, so that’s all right then.
And that of KMB and the Gaddafi brood.
Daphne, you have to admit it. The PM must have a soft spot for Merkel.
He was very keen to tell us that the only EU countries to perform well during the financial crises were Malta and Germany.
He is making sure our name will be mentioned with that of Germany on all occasions.
Lawrence Gonzi will go down in Maltese history as the Prime Minister who failed to act when required to do so.
Just like KMB, who failed to act in the Egypt Air hijack. With the leaders of the respective Oppositions literally “sitting on the fence”.
Malta has always had the leaders it deserves.
Yes, and it is indeed a real shame, even for Gonzi himself, who had done pretty well so far.
I used to be more than happy to seek out this net-site.I wanted to thanks for your time for this excellent read!! I definitely having fun with every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you blog post.
