Is there a place for Pulis and Scerri in Muscat's skip?

Published: August 3, 2011 at 3:24pm

Any minute now and Joseph Muscat will emerge from beneath a heap of Michelle’s teddy-bears to tell us that there’s a place for Charles Pulis and Godwin Scerri in LGBT Labour and on his tink-tenk IDEAT.

Oh, and that we should not assess them on ‘this single act alone’ but should judge them by their track record, while not discussing the single act because it involves sex and their private life.

And I think that now we know the charges all related to boys aged 13 to 16, we can stop talking nonsense about paedophiles. Paedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescent children – it is the very absence of sexuality that makes them keen to violate – and are not in the least bit interested in adolescents.

These two men strike me as having been born homosexual and having ended up totally twisted by a repressive tar-rahal upbringing that bred in them a hatred and fear of homosexuality so deep that they didn’t even dare recognise it in themselves. They forced themselves on adolescents because those adolescents weren’t technically men and so that didn’t make the priests homosexual (they thought).

And rather than entering the priesthood to gain access to children – in whom they weren’t interested anyway – they joined the priesthood because celibacy would give them a reason not to confront their sexuality.

There are heterosexual men whose sexuality is perverted in a similar manner by fear and repression and the association of sex and women with ‘bad’ and ‘disgusting’, as a result of which they cannot form relationships with adult women and prey on adolescent girls instead, or hide behind a bush at the beach and do you-know-what.

The reason why there seems to be a disproportionate number of these sorts of sexually warped people in traditional Catholic societies shouldn’t have to be spelled out. The opening up of society over recent years will have changed this.

    Pederasts, not paedophiles.

I guess any sexual act was preceded by an explanation to the boy that it was Mintoff who decriminalised sodomy in the Golden Years and thank God for that, Amen.

  2. ciccio2011 says:

I am also expecting Joseph Muscat to call an urgent press conference in which he will call for the resignation of the Pope because, he will allege, Benedict XVI signed the defrocking of Charles Pulis under pressure from the ‘Maltese church’ with possible interference from Castille. He will be flanked by Jose A. Herrera on the left, and by Giannella Caruana Curran on the right.

  3. Fenech Nick says:

These cases has nothing to do with homosexuals and pedophiles but these are cases of Hebephilia ages 11-14 and Ephebophilia ages 15-19

[Daphne – Homosexuals are people attracted to others of the same gender, Nick. It’s irrelevant whether they’re 13 or 30. And let’s not get too technical. In my neck of the woods, men who have sex with adolescent boys are pederasts, no fancy names.]

    • Steve Forster says:

I would call them something else but you wouldn’t print it.

Plus it would be pretty clear and definitely not technical. I also would propose the chemical castration route for them except I would prefer the blunt scissor approach.

    • johnUSA says:

It is not irrelevant whether the person a homosexual is attracted to is 13 or 30. It is very relevant. A adult gay man is attracted to another adult gay man. Let’s not try and confuse people by linking pedophiles to homosexuals! A clear cut distinction has to be made. Period.

    • Interested Bystander says:

      We call them NONCES.

    • Carmel Scicluna says:

Nick, you are damn right. But mind you, there are decent homosexuals, lesbians, paedophiles, hebephiles, ephebophiles and teleiophiles. Some of these guys marry and have children. They will never get into trouble with the law and live their sexual fantasies with full responsibility, adult maturity and mature adulthood i.e. they do not indulge.

Really, there is no trouble with any sexual orientation. People get into trouble when they have low I.Q., psychiatric disorders, severe depression etc.

It’s not true that all paedophiles abuse children. It is also true that not all heterosexuals are of the decent sort. Unfortunately, people don’t know much about the non-heterosexual decent guys who are different from the straight guys because they are rarely mentioned in the newspapers. • A. Charles says:

I have always classified the Sliema Local Council as one of the worst in Malta. All the projects done in that locality were done by the central government. It is dangerous to walk on the pavements and it is not very people-friendly. I am from the deep south of the island.

  5. Edward Caruana Galizia says:

Celibacy does not lead to pedophilia. Suppressing your sexuality, although harmful in many ways, does not twist your mind to such an extent that you start to abuse children.

Pedophilia does not exist in nature and is therefore a psychological illness and a threat to society.

    • Grezz says:

I agree. There are a few reasons why they could have entered the priesthood in the first place:

      1) they weren’t attracted to women and didn’t know why, so thought it was because they were destined for holy life;

      2) they were attracted to children or adolescents and didn’t quite understand the nature of this attraction, so thought that it was a sign they should work with them;

      3) they understood the nature of the beginnings of their attraction to men and also that it was considered the worst thing in the society/family in which they lived.

Remember that boys became novices in their teens. We’re not talking here of a situation in which men woke up one day and said ‘Oh I’ll become a priest to have access to children’.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

        @ Antoine Vella:

“Actually there are a few cases of sex between adults and juveniles in some animals”.

I know, but I define pedophilia as a sexual preference. Some apes are known to have sex with all females of their “clan”, irrespective of age, but I don’t define those as pedophiles.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

“Pedophilia does not exist in nature”.

Careful…it takes only one documented case for someone to argue that pedophilia is natural because there are non-human animal pedophiles.

In any case, humans are part of nature too.

Of course, “natural=good, unnatural=bad” is faulty reasoning – there’s a name for it: the naturalistic fallacy, but you’d be surprised how many people fall for it.

The case against pedophilia (and any other form of sexual abuse) should be argued in terms of rights.

      • Antoine Vella says:

Actually there are a few cases of sex between adults and juveniles in some animals (weasel, ferret, stoat . . can’t remember which) but it’s too hot to put on my anorak so let’s not go into it.

    • vaux says:

There is one reality that comes out from all this, that directly or indirectly the accused are victims themselves! I just wonder if this vicious circle will ever be broken.

‘Pedophilia does not exist in nature’, (though copulation amongst same sex even if rare has been noted by ethnologists) that is because animals (mammals) unlike their human counterpart are dominated by seasonal cycles and sexual activity starts, crudely said, with ‘rape’.

In humans, culture and religion take an important place in the development of sexuality, not only, but play an important part even in Politics. Michel Foucault ‘History of Sexuality’ is very interesting though I found, not easy reading.

On the contrary I found Eva Basch-Kahre, (Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst) ‘The Existential Choice’ of great help in trying to understand problems related to sexuality and character formation. She has the advantage of bridging the distance (trying at least) between Theology and Science.

“The reason why there seems to be a disproportionate number of these sorts of sexually warped people in tradtional Catholic societies shouldn’t have to be spelled out. The opening up of society over recent years will have changed this.”

Why do these ‘sexually warped people’ have to come from a ‘Catholic society’?

    According to CNN report:
“Dr. Gene Abel estimates that between 1% and 5% of our population molest children.”
    – CNN Specials Transcript #454-Thieves of Childhood.

This statistic is from America – not a closed society.

[Daphne – I wasn’t talking about paedophiles, but homosexuals raised to think that homosexuality is an abomination, can’t face it in themselves, enter the priesthood, and end up seeking solace with adolescent boys. That is definitely warping caused by a narrow-minded, oppressive upbringing, and that kind of upbringing is generally misguided religiosity.]

    • johnUSA says:

I’m sorry to disagree. An oppressed gay man would go on and marry a woman and try to hide his true nature .. but certainly not taking it out young kids! You are confusing the two things.

[Daphne – That’s right. But Charles Pulis, at least, appears to be somebody whose proper homosexual development (and mental and emotional development too, apparently) was arrested around the age of 14 or 15 when he became a novice. Hence he continued to be attracted to ‘boys his age’. Godwin Scerri – there are no words.]

  9. dery says:

I am glad that you made the distinction between paedophiles and others who are attracted to young adults.

[Daphne – Dery, adulthood begins at 18. Boys aged 13 – 16 are boys, adolescents. A young adult would be, say, 19 ot 20 and obviously over the age of consent – hence ‘adult’.]

I say that I am glad because it may come as a surprise to you, Daphne, and other women, that MOST straight men are attracted to 15 year old girls who exhibit attractive sexual characteristics such as being shapely etc. The clear skin etc is an added attraction.

[Daphne – Most men are NOT attracted to 15-year-old girls, dery. They blank them, briefly pausing to take note of the fact that they’re pretty, and register the 20-year-olds instead. Not even men in their 20s are attracted to 15-year-old girls, and there’s a word for men over the age of 30 who are. If you find you are routinely attracted to 15-year-old girls, seek help. It’s called the Lolita complex.]

It is just that 99.9 % of men do not talk about it, especially to adult women.

[Daphne – You have some strange friends, dery. Take care.]

There are even very convincing scientific explanations as to why men tend to prefer younger women and women tend to go for older men. (This is a very general rule of thumb).

[Daphne – You are making the classic pervy excuse of confusing women and girls. Men are attracted to younger women, yes – younger WOMEN. Not schoolgirls – that’s a whole different fetish area.]

The other day I was having this conversation with this group of other men in their 30s (who had had a few drinks) and one of them said: “Did you see that really sexy girl over there?”. I told him “Yes I did and she is 14 though she looks 24. You can end up in prison if you do anything with her.” His reply. “A male judge would understand and would be lenient.” My reply, “What if it is a female judge?” Everybody nodded in sad understanding.

[Daphne – Clue: she looked 24. If she looked 14, dery, they wouldn’t think li kien fiha daqqa. And if they did, get yourself some new friends.]

    • il-Ginger says:

Daphne and Dery, the issue about age is not what they look like, but whether they’re mentally capable of handling a sexual relationship. Age is used, because you cannot accurately measure mental capabilities.

It would be really weird if women weren’t allowed to have sex, because ‘they look too young’.

    • dery says:

I think that in fact we agree but the message got lost in cyberspace.

Notice that I refer to shapely 15 year olds and not some flat chested girl in a school uniform. I mean that many 15 year old girls especially when they are all dolled up look very womanly. There is nothing pervy in lusting after a person who happens to be by legal definition a girl but has all the attributes of an adult woman. For example I find nothing pervy in Berlusconi having done whatever he did with that 17 year old. My God, have you seen what she looks like? She is like a greek godess. I see no sense in the argument (usually put forward by women) “But he is 70!”. He is still a man with the same urges of a 17 year old man but perhaps he should be wiser.

I’m glad that you mentioned Vladimir Nabakov’s creation – Lolita, which is considered by many as one of the best novels of the 20th Century. In that novel Nabakov’s lolita is a nymphette – she is definitely not a woman. Even if you watch the two films (I prefer the Stanley Kubrick one) you will see that she is depicted as almost flat chested and with no hips. This is NOT the type of young woman (or girl) most men lust after. Lust does not take into acount chronological age or legality. There are certain cues that will make a man look twice … and more.

As regards boys I think that we tend to start looking like men a liitle later so you you will never find a 15 year old boy who looks like he is 25.

      • John H says:

Sue Lyon was not flat chested! Stanley Kubrick had tried to cast a flat chested girl but got into trouble with the censors. He also tried to cast a younger girl, but got into similar problems.

Sue Lyon, for reference to anyone who hasn’t seen the Stanley Kubrick movie –

        http://www.google.com.mt/search?q=sue+lyon&hl=mt&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=cQU7TrGtNoTKswbx4vUY&ved=0CCQQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=709

I’m sorry, slight tangent. But she definitely did not look like a girl. As hard as he tried (with the pulled up hair and the gum-chewing), he could not reconcile the fact that he did not get what he want.

      • dery says:

@ John H. Kubrick did all his best to make her look as young as possible. There is a lot of Kubrick in the film that is not Nabakov. For example the lolly pop scene I can’t seem to remember in the book and it was one of the scenes where I found that Kubrick went overboard. At the time the film shocked the world…. like a lot of great art has done before. Any art that leaves you cold is not really art is it?

  10. yor/malta says:

Has the Roman Catholic Church ever carried out an in-depth study on the effects of enforced celibacy?

[Daphne – Celibacy is not enforced. If you don’t want to be celibate, you leave the priesthood. Many priests have done so for that reason, also in Malta. Normal men who can’t stick with the celibacy just leave the priesthood, they don’t fiddle with kiddies or force themselves on boys. Celibacy doesn’t make you a pervert.]

  14. Dee says:

I have enormous sympathy and admiration for His Holiness Pope Benedict as well as for His Excellency Archbishop Cremona.

They ended up having to humilate themselves by apologising over and over again for what was swept under the carpet by their immediate predecessors.

His holiness was quite handy with a broom, I’m told.

    • Chris Ripard says:

You’re right there, Dee – prosit. John Paul II had a lot to answer for, but never did. I think Benedict is way way better.

      Ditto with Cremona.

    • dudu says:

I think that from the church’s side the mover and shaker in this story was Mgr. Scicluna, the Promoter of Justice in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (Vatican).

Archbishop Cremena is very generous with smiling but if he weren’t pressured by the media perhaps he would have swept everything under the carpet.

  15. Grezz says:

    Spot on, Daphne!

The school I attended was replete with nuns who could not be defined as “womanly”.

To be fair, as far as I know, they never sexually abused any of the girls there, but at least one or two of them definitely vented their frustration on the children in other ways. Now that wearing a veil is apparently no longer obligatory for them, I can easily pinpoint the frustrated lesbians.

I can only come to the conclusion that – since most of them would now be in their 60s / 70s – they come from a generation where they would have been “encouraged” into the nunnery to cover up their obvious sexuality.

The cases of Pulis and Scerri are not isolated ones. There are probably several others who have been perpetrating the same crimes for years. Shame on those – the Curia included – who encourage keeping the identity of such perpetrators secret.

    • Chris Ripard says:

You ain’t kidding, Grezz. No one in Malta seems to have picked up the story about how the Jesuits in USA accepted to pay (I forget exactly) a huge settlement for institutionalised sexual abuse of children – xi 70 million bucks.

There was also a Jesuit called McGuire who Pulis and Scerri seem to have modelled their careers on. The Jesuit order lied and deceived investigations by parents/authorities for 30 years.

It is a great pity that the universal Church has these rotten apples, because they make very bad adverts for it. Nevertheless, I still believe in the Catholic Faith.

  16. Al Buhagiar says:

    Daphne,

I am not, and will probably never be, convinced of the whole LGBT Labour thing and it’s functions. However, to suggest, or even joke about the fact, that these 2 paedophiles who are not even worthy of names will be taken on by JM into LGBT Labour’s ”tink-tenk” is really low.

To my, and everyone else’s, understandnig LGBT Labour is made up of lesbians, gay, bisexual and trangendered people. Thers is no place, and I am sure that there will never be a place for paedophiles within this organisation. I’m surprised you would stoop so low and make this remark, joke, assumption or whatever you wanna call it!

I will not go into the merits of how one becomes a paedophile, even if I think your argument is corrupt and wrong. All I know is that I, an openely gay man, have never been attracted to boys even when confronted by the world telling me I am living in sin and will eventuall rot in hell. My attraction has always been to other men. When my attraction was to other boys, it was at the time I was also a boy myself. Pretty much the same way boys are attracted to girls, around adolescence.

I’m seriously offended by this post.

    Al, ka chunky

[Daphne – It was a joke, Al.]

  17. l-ispettore derrick says:

It’s over and done with and justice has prevailed; let us all start discussing pressing matters which should be our real agenda in this turbulent world we are living in.

  18. dery says:

Now that I think about it I remember all sort of things from my childhood that today would be considered abuse but it is only because society has become so neurotic about children – we have moved fron one extreme to another. Up till the late 19th century children, even in Europe, were considered little more than slaves, ewpecially if they were working class.

I had this one teacher who would total up the number of mistakes in my maths homework and they would be translated into slaps on the palm of my hand with a wooden stick. Today’s psychologists (like Mariella – wife of tele evangelist Manche) would scream ABUSE.

No but really, his method is what made me pass my maths exam as otherwise my laziness when t came to things mathematical would have been a major stumbling block to further my education.

    • M. says:

My religion teacher – a nun from a different order brought in specifically to teach children at the nuns’ school I attended – made me sit through a whole lesson with a carrier-bag full of horse shit on my feet.

She had said that it was the work of the devil, trying to disrupt our religion lesson. (In realitiy, it was some St. Aloysius’ boys who chucked it through the classroom window at the start of the lesson.)

That nun absolutely disliked me – for reasons unknown, but possibly because I was left-handed (“tax-xitan”). To prove it all the more, she let the girl sitting next to me get up and change her place, while I was not allowed to move my feet from underneath the bag.

I hate that woman to this very day.

Had it happened today, I would have reacted differently – probably by emptying the contents of the bag over her. Hopefully, my children will choose the latter option in the unlikely chance of finding themselves in the same situation.

[Daphne – She wouldn’t have done it to you today. Bullies don’t pick on people who can and will fight back.]

      • dery says:

I believe you completely because I witnessed what nuns did to us boys and girls and Daphne must have wintessed some unpleasant things herself.

In an earler comment I said that most children get over this sort of thing. We remember it but I don’t think it warped us in any significant way. That is why I cannot forgive the St. Joseph home boys – they were warped not by the priests but by things that happened before they entered the institute.

[Daphne – You can’t forgive the boys for what, exactly?]

Don’t get me wrong, sex between a 50 year old priest and a 15 year old boy is very but very odd but many boys have gone through some sort of abuse situation. It is only those who haev previous histories who make a big deal out of it (asking for moey does not help their cause).

[Daphne – Your attitude is most unwise: it happens all the time to lots of boys in many schools etc, so why make a fuss. Let’s carry on raping women, then shall we? After all, it’s been happening since the dawn of time and only a few hysterical neurotics decided to make a fuss about it.]

I of course condemn what the priests did but for heaven’s sake you and I all had to deal with perverts when we were young and it was no big issue for us.

[Daphne – If you had to deal with perverts, dery, talk to somebody. You clearly have a problem here. Most children and adolescents do not have to deal with perverts. I certainly did not, except for the occasional flasher on Tower Road or on a beach, which is absolutely not comparable. I don’t think you grasp the fact that you think this way precisely because you have been groomed and corrupted into thinking that it is nothing, by the people who coached you into thinking that it isn’t. Normal people with secure egos and self-repect react with disgust and fully understand the implications.]
