Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando sums up his attitude and that of the Labour Party

Published: August 17, 2011 at 10:35am

Mr and Mrs Calvin Coolidge

Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Ronnie Pellegrini and Robert Musumeci appear to spend much of their time raiding Google for ‘lessons in life’ quotes to paste on their Facebook walls.

If Cathedral Library were still open, they would be raiding that for Hallmark posters.

Few things irritate me more than grown men quoting other people’s pearls of wisdom because they haven’t any of their own. Do it once in a while to illustrate a point with something pertinent, by all means, but don’t make a Facebook career out of it because at that age you’re supposed to be able to express your own opinions in your own words.

I suppose it’s only a matter of time before they begin quoting Kahlil Gibran at us. Please don’t tell me they’ve done so already.

Here’s Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, justifying his attitude and offering words of encouragement to Labour by quoting the 30th president of the United States of America:

“Press on – nothing can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Perseverance and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge

Jeffrey seems to believe that Coolidge is saying here that persistence is a substitute for talent, genius and education. But he is not.

He says here that it is a necessary attribute for success in addition to at least one of those other things.

    Brilliant!

This will go in my Facebook favourite quotes.

There was a time when you didn’t even have a Facebook account. Things do change.

[Daphne – In fact, I don’t have a Facebook account. The world is full of people who do, so I needn’t bother.]

    • Angus says:

      Dear Daphne
I follow your blog and I truly believe that we need a few more journalists like you who really speak their mind!
About facebook, I understand your logic (and in fact I’m not a facebook fan myself), but on the other hand, it is a great tool which you can use to drastically expand your audience.

  3. Desiree' Attard says:

Why do you say JPO sums up the attitude of the Labour party? Last time I checked, he was a member of the Nationalist Party.

  4. Dee says:

Cyrus and Deborah Schembri are also into Googled daily quotes, that is when they are not complimentling some Labour Party club for the saucy hot dogs served at its BBQ or cheering each other on to ” keep it up”.

The best one was the famous Pastor Neumoller one which predictably made the rounds on Facebook a few weeks back.

    • Joe Micallef says:

On the 26th of June Deborah even started a page on twitter with profile saying.

“Dr. Schembri is a Maltese lawyer in general practice. Also a new politician and a candidate for the Maltese General Elections with the Labour Party”

However she didn’t really get going and only tweeted the following two tweets

Nirringrazzja lil kull min sa jibda jsegwini ukoll fuq Twitter. :)
      27 Jun

This is my first tweet, getting used to all this new technology
      26 Jun

Related to her first tweet I am not sure if she

      1. Gave up on the new technology
      2. Gave up on the PL
      3. Or was let down by the little following

Christian Peregin, one of the 26 that follow her page, yesterday tweeted the following

@edma Thanks Ed. Some comments make me want to start a riot. Ideally a riot of minds though: survival of the smartest. That would be bliss.

      “Wise” words

      • Joe Micallef says:

        “errata corridge” plus

Peregrin’s tweet was a few days back and DS does not follow or is not followed by the Leader, that is, on Twitter!

      • Dee says:

Going by what she told an interviewer some weeks ago, she has an irritating habit of taking decisions on impulse and not continuing with projects she starts.
Political mavericks come in all shapes and sizes by the sound of it.

Some of the comments posted on Jeffrey’s Facebook wall verge on the criminal.

‘jissussidjaw l-skratac u jaghmlu open season fuq il-bahar……’

[Daphne – You can report them as hate speech (click the box ‘racist’) very easily. Drag your cursor over the Wall comment and you’ll see a little ‘x’ on the right. Click on that and follow the ‘report abuse’ instructions.]

He is excused for quoting Albert Einstein. After all, he is ” in charge” of the Malta Council for Science and Technology.

  9. Bob says:

His comments also attract people like Vladmir Cutajar Forte who think that Norman Lowell is the solution to all imigrants problems.

    • Vladmir Cutajar Forte says:

..and I will insist again with you Bob that yes, Norman Lowell is the ONLY solution for Illegal Immigration. You know why ? ? Because 6 years ago in Safi, he predicted this problem and gave the solution. He was sentenced for racial hatred and today..2011, the EU is recognizing that the ONLY best solution is by stopping them offshore, giving them supplies and turning them back to were they came from….and if you are threatened……just shoot like the Australians do, oh and like they do, in their respective country.

How many of them are “victims” and how many are “sleepercells” how would you know ? ? 15 policemen injured in a small riot 2 days ago, imagine the worse what could happen. So please, when you mention my name next time explain yourself properly. JPO attracts my attention because i am sick and tired of this lie of having two political parties. We only have one….PNPL whether you like it or not and they are both comfortable were they stand. I have one questions for you. Do you honestly believe that the ideology of any of the two parties is maintained/respected ? My answer is NO and we had a referendum to prove it. We have become convenient to belong to a particular group because our backbone has been shattered. Norman remained constant with his views….always. And if you tell me that Illegal Immigration is not a problem….then I do not know what else to tell you.

      • You watch this movie and judge for yourself

      • La Redoute says:

“Norman Lowell is the ONLY solution for Illegal Immigration.”

I agree. Put him in a boat and tow him to Libya.

Seriously, though, how do you imagine that electing Norman Lowell will solve your problems? Exactly what sort of resources are at his disposal, besides the ragbag of rubbish that gather under the cover of darkness?

      • La Redoute says:

Hmmm. Interesting. Didn’t Joseph Muscat, Great Leader of the Labour Party hotly deny any association with Norman Lowell?

The message hasn’t filtered down to St Paul’s Bay.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

        @ Vladmir Cutajar Forte:

Trust me to think that it’s actually members of parliament who make laws.

At least you have spared us from a Lowell video clip.

“…because at that age you’re supposed to be able to express your own opinions in your own words…”

Some time in the future, the following will be a wisdom quote from JPO:

    ” ” – JPO

  11. Interested Bystander says:

PS best of luck keeping the ginger magician out of castille

  12. ST says:

Confucius – I think, because I must have heard this third or fourth hand – said that determination without wisdom is oppression. The truth and simplicity of this statement highlights the superficiality of Coolidge’s thoughts.

  13. Joseph A Borg says:

Let’s battle quotes with counter quotes. I’m sure Baxxter knows this one:

“I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.”

    — Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Never seen it. But Clausewitz says something very much along the same lines. About how a brilliant general has something else beyond intelligence, perseverance, and all the rest. He calls it the “coup d’œil”. It’s more or less the ability to see the big picture in a split second + seize the initiative at the right moment.

Needless to say, it’s a rare quality among decision-makers in this blessed country of ours.

      • Joseph A Borg says:

Your Clausewitz reference smells like hubris to me baxxter. It served Napoleon until it didn’t serve him any more and betrayed him. Is it faith that betrayed him or his megalomania or was it the fact that finally the British had trained to be better than the French? When leaders take on the crown of a god and think they’re humanity’s gift to whatever I tend to get a bit cynical. Hubris…

Hammerstein comes across as being an aloof old-stock Prussian. If anything he was removing the patently incompetent and the dangerously stupid from positions of command and preferred the idle few who have the mental baggage of exploring ideas and take their time to consider things before committing to anything.

Was it Sun Tsu who said ‘only fight the battles you can win’?

But I agree with you about this blessed country, we idolise those who busy themselves too much to the detriment of their learning life’s lessons and having the patience to wait things out instead of running onto where only fools dare thread…

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

Then you didn’t understand Clausewitz at all. He wasn’t talking about dictators, but generals on the battlefield. It could equally apply to business leaders, or politicians, or scientists.

Hell, Daphne has shown some pretty remarkable coups d’œil.

She has a nose for important news stories, and can tell you how it all plays out in a few lines, while other journalists are still busy scratching at their notebooks reporting the fekts es dej hepind.

      • Joseph A Borg says:

I get it, Baxxter, and agree with you.

  14. Kenneth Cassar says:

I have just been to Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s Facebook page. He must be really proud of all the racist and xenophobic comments that are filling his page. What a despicable man.

  15. ray says:

At least he did not try to make us believe that the quote is his.

  16. Insolja says:

JPO and his table companion Karl seem to find a lot to talk about. It’s not the first time that they have been seen in each other’s company.

  17. Marku says:

If by “persistence” JPO means the Maltese word “fitt” than he certainly has that talent in abundance.

  18. Bob says:

I love how Facebook tells you everything about a person, such as: Aaron Farrugia is at Larnaca beach.

[Daphne – Unbelievable. Even their holiday destinations are British chav.]

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

He’s at Larnaca beach. Lovely. Let’s go burgle him. This won’t get me into trouble, will it, Daphne?

[Daphne – I have a better idea: get Cyrus to do it.]

    • Grezz says:

First it was Tander Saliba tal-Labour bragging about his fantastic new bedroom on Facebook. Now it’s Anglu Farrugia’s daughter with her bedroom in Sqalljia http://www.pozzocassero.it/camere%20ok.htm

I’d rather stay home, than spend my holidays in such a crappy place.

Imma forsi ahjar minn karavan l-Armier.

This is hilarious – I just scrolled down on the link, and the “kitchen” is right there – slap, bang next to the “bedroom”.

  20. What worries me is that the timesofmalta.com message boards are swiftly becoming a portal for xenophobic and racist bigotry. Now they are even trying to ridicule the UNHCR. I tried to write in a message describing certain comments as xenophobic but it seems that the moderator took exception.
