Joe Sammut and the Gaddafi millions

Published: August 23, 2011 at 7:27pm

As I watch rebel fighters parade around wearing Gaddafi’s hats and personal ornaments, while posing for photographs on that infamous fist clutching an American fighter-jet, I wonder what former Labour Party treasurer – which is where and how he got the Gaddafi contacts (Muammar bankrolled Labour) -Smokin’ Joe Sammut is doing with the Gaddafi millions which he keeps in client accounts in banks in Malta.

I know that the (Maltese) outfit charged with tracking down Gaddafi assets in Malta had identified the Sammut stashes after I broke the story, on this website, that Mosta-based accountant Joe Sammut is the one who handles accounts and pays bills for at least two of the Gaddafi sons, including the fees of stars contracted to sing at their parties in St Barts and Sardinia.

I’m sure the banks are keeping a weather eye on any movement in those accounts, because the temptation Joe Sammut now faces would test a saint.

Like Gaddafi he is history, but like Gaddafi he is going to live off blood money for the rest of his life.

Whilst watching on TV the citizens of Libya getting used to savouring freedom for the first time in 42 years, I remembered the sense of exhilaration and jubilation the Maltese people felt the day after the general elections of May 1987.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Hope old Dom is still compos mentis enough to see the goings-on in the compound of his old comrade Muammar Ghaddafi.

I’m being serious when I ask this question: could Joe Sammut now say that the money is going to be used for legal defence when and if Gaddafi is captured or for his sons?

    • La Redoute says:

He can say whatever he likes or whatever suits him. Ill-gotten money does not belong to the Gaddafis. It belongs to the people they exploited for decades.

Daph, heard the last one Julia Farrugia on TVM news?

[Daphne – No, I was watching CNN, Sky, the BBC and Mad Men.]

‘The Resources Ministry has issued an international call for applications for oil exploration licences in areas south and west of Malta.’

Good timing. Gaddafi is probably not in the mood for a legal battle at the moment.

    I just hope they are

Maybe he can share some with his Labour brethren to buy some steak instead of the usual pizza. I’m tired of seeing all these malnourished Labour supporters yearning for meat.

This is the most insulting comment I have read this morning. Tanya, only Joe Sammut knows about the location of St. Bart’s, and wagyu sausages, you have gone overboard. How many people who read Illum, l-Orizzont, Torca or Kullhadd keep abreast of such culinary treats as wagyu beef from New Zealand.

  8. Jozef says:

I’ve been told that only eight months ago, one of the Gaddafi juniors was looking at property in Malta.

One feature on his essentials list was a helicopter pad.

    • A. Charles says:

I am not surprised; Toto` Rina, when he was on the run, had a villa in the northern part of Gozo and he used it to holiday there together with his family.

…. and the murders of Giovanni Falcone and General Dalla Chiesa…. All in malta.com

  9. kev says:

Why don’t you explain instead why the West has not released a single cent of the €150+ bln of Libyan frozen assets to the Benghazi regime?

Also, why haven’t the corporate media told us that CIA and MI6 ‘destablisation squads’ bombed several government buildings across Tripoli, including police stations, as the ragtag rebel army advanced into the city?

By the way, the Islamists are betting their ass their time has come… But that’s another story.

    • La Redoute says:

It’s a crowded marketplace, Kev. The corporate media can’t compete with bored husbands in Brussels suburbs.

    • La Redoute says:

Here’s a shorter question, Kev: why don’t you explain why Joe Sammut hasn’t handed over the Gaddafis’ ill-gotten cash to buy essentials for people in Libya?
