  1. Kenneth Cassar says:

    At least he said “pleas”.

  2. Antoine Vella says:

Well, he did say ‘pleas’ (I feel the note was written by a man)

  3. dery says:

Daph, you don’t need to publish this but why do u put up such posts? Things like this are all over the place and even I with my limited Maltese spelling can see atrocities in Maltese and not just English. Take a look at a website called engrish.com and compare what is there to what you have posted.

[Daphne – It’s not about the spelling, dery.]

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

It’s about the attitude. The ABZ gene.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

Dery, if you don’t find it either funny or sad, you’ve got a problem.

    • johnUSA says:

She posted it to subtly imply that it was probably a laburist, particularly a Mintoffjan, that put up that note. Which is of course, utter bullshit.

      [Daphne – Did she now?]

    • dery says:

Sorry I am feeling particularly slow, must be the heat. If it is not about the sign, what is it about?

Isn’t ‘ostja’ blasphemy? Keeps me wondeing about the way our linguistic roots got intertwined with our religion.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

Dery, it IS about the sign (in fact it isn’t about anything but the sign). And again, if you don’t find it either funny or sad, you’ve got a problem.

I won’t waste any time explaining. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. Move on.

    • Yanika says:

The spelling is in fact correct (apart from ‘please’) – and I’m not counting the red word because it’s a swear word.

  4. A. Charles says:

    Pulit!

  5. Alex says:

The genius covered the name tag…

  6. Rita Camilleri says:

I love it ……. good start to the weekend

  7. Dee says:

Maybe the author of that polite plea is a non-Christian (as are plenty in Malta are) and did not see anything untoward in writing what he did.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

You’ll be surprised to learn that Maltese Christians swear the most. As an atheist, I actually find swearing silly.

  8. cat says:

I have my doubts whether these people were mentally fine and if they could be a danger to the society they live in.

    (postman/woman at least ghandu/a s-sens tal-ugwaljanza)

  9. Anthony Ellul says:

PUrRfect Post Box – keep them coming or .. keep us posted :-) – I guess he/she is from Sliema. :-)…started off politely in English missing one CAPITAL E and ended off aggressively ( the unique way) in Maltese . I enjoyed this dear note..

  10. Paul Bonnici says:

It looks like it has been written by a child with the underlining of every word.

At least his/her English spelling is correct except for ‘pleas’.

And the definitive article of ‘ostja’ is correct, he/she did not omit the apostrophe or use a hyphen instead!

The postman will probably bin the letters seeing this offensive notice.

Correct me if I am wrong!

  11. Psaila says:

    Couldn’t he fix the bell?

  12. P Borg says:

Once you’re commenting on spelling (though it’s still out of subject!)… I’ve got this nice one for you… fresh from Malta Today…

  13. Carmel Scicluna says:

My children, I want you to show deep respect for the Eucharist. (Our Lady of Borg in-Nadur – 03/08/11)

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

I would rather respect people than food.

      • Carmel Scicluna says:

I would rather respect God’s silence rather than people’s bla bla bla.

      • Anton Zammit says:

Whilst respecting your atheism, I would never consider posting comments in the full knowledge that I would be insulting you by what is written within. Is that how you propose to respect people Mr. Cassar?

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

I thought this Carmel Scicluna was just taking the piss.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

        @ Anton Zammit:

I would be disrespectful if I refrained from being honest just so that I would not offend anyone who chooses to be offended.

What I also find disrespectful is people persistently posting claims on what “our lady” supposedly said to charlatans and frauds on blog pages that have nothing to do with it.

In internet language, we call such people trolls, and they are usually treated with the contempt they deserve, particularly if they are mouthpieces of charlatans and frauds.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

[Carmel Scicluna – I would rather respect God’s silence rather than people’s bla bla bla].

How about putting it into practice then. Enough with the bla bla bla about what some fraud claims “our lady” told him.

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

        @ Anton Zammit:

By the way, you don’t respect people by lying to them. Christians cannot honestly respect atheism, even though they might honestly respect atheists.

      • chavsRus says:

        …. and this

“What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist,” (Salman Rushdie)

[Daphne – Bit of a hypocrite, aren’t you, Chavs, given that you read what I have to say so as to become irritated, aggravated and provoked into writing comments asking me to cease, desist or change my views.]

      • chavsRus says:

Not at all. If you think that, you haven’t understood anything.

Though I disagree, often strongly with most of what you say, I would defend your right to say it with my life (metaphorically, of course)

What I despise is the fact that you invariably choose the most spiteful and hurtful way of saying it.

[Daphne – I’m sharp, Chavs, something alien to Maltese culture, which is why it is often confused with spite. People who know me will tell you that I couldn’t possibly be less spiteful while having to contend with all manner of spite directed towards me on a daily basis, in public and private, to which I almost never retaliate. As for hurtful – well, tough. Those who can’t stand the heat should get out of the proverbial, grow a thick skin and just stop whining. If you want the niceness of hypocrisy, look elsewhere.]

I think you have single-handedly raised the “hate factor” in Maltese politics by a factor of 10.

[Daphne – Hardly, Chavs. You should have been around in the 1980s. It was hell. Things are lovely now. If you mean I’ve raised the hate factor because people who vote for your party hate me, blame them not me. They’re the ones with screwed-up emotions (hence the choice of party).]

Superstitious bull by people who like to believe that they have found a way to jump the queue to their particular heaven .

    • A. Charles says:

Did you hear it directly from the horse’s mouth or from the mouth of that trickster Angelik?

I know this person; he is persona non grata in my surgery as he has a knack of not settling bills and I am not the only one to suffer.

Just ask around in Zejtun and Birzebbuga. I saw him only yesterday in Zejtun and he has gone from merely fat to obese. It must be the good life.

  14. The other Kev says:

What a good laugh, thanks for the post.

  21. GiovDeMartino says:

Paul Bonnici is wrong. We write l-arlogg and not l’arlogg. He should have used the hyphen.

  22. Steve says:

Everything starts for a reason. It’s how much you know about the story, like why did that person write that.

Was it because he was frustrated about something or just because he is a Hamallu. This picture tells us only a segment of reality, it excludes the beginning and most importantly it does not reveal what the postman will do if he has to deliver registered mail.

Daphne in the spirit of good reporting the facts please keep us informed.

  23. John Zammit-Spiteri says:

    Dear Daphne,

I can’t help it but I am jealous at the way you write. Your last article was tops. I didn’t know that most articles are still accessible on http://www.independent.com.mt.

You have a brilliant way of describing sometimes horrifying facts with a large dose of humour. The way you master the language is wonderful. I don’t know if I am saying something which has already been decided, I suggest that you compile all your articles and publish them.

I would want to be the first to get a copy. Sadly a lot of things you relate are not funny at all, considering the way they can seriously affect our lives.

But on the whole I look forward to reading your articles because they are not only entertaining but alive with facts and I believe it has a great impact on those who seek reality.

    Thanks for the good work.

  24. Carmel Scicluna says:

Daphne – I’m sharp, Chavs, something alien to Maltese culture, which is why it is often confused with spite.

Not only that. You are the best journalist in Malta. Nobody surpasses you. Maybe that’s why I am addicted to your blog. By the way, I can’t understand why Maltese people find it disturbing that a God-fearing man like me really enjoys atheist and lapsed Catholic authors, artists and journalists.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

[Carmel Scicluna – By the way, I can’t understand why Maltese people find it disturbing that a God-fearing man like me really enjoys atheist and lapsed Catholic authors, artists and journalists].

I can’t speak for all Maltese people, but atheists usually don’t find that disturbing at all. On the opposite end, atheists are known (through surveys) to be the most knowledged on the Bible. So what you say is hardly surprising, let alone disturbing.

  25. chavsRus says:

I see you are back to deleting the messages that upset your self-image.

[Daphne – I delete brazen insults, Chavs, on the same principle that I will not allow people to insult me in my own home. There’s a Maltese saying involving crapping in hands and wiping on faces. If you wish to insult me, go elsewhere. There are plenty who will be more than happy to take you and to join in. I am not responsible for your appalling manners and I do not have to contend with them. I am not your mother, who is almost certainly the one to blame for your poor behaviour and your chips. And I am not concerned with image, self or otherwise. If you had the merest bit of intelligence you would have picked that up long ago. The people who are concerned with image are those who need to put up a false front, even to themselves, or reinvent themselves.]

  26. Ginga says:

Maybe the real issue is being missed here. It is not the spelling which is atrocious but the fact that the postman does not seem to use enough of his common sense to knock – this is the hilarious bit.
