Joseph Muscat on Libya: "We are thick-skinned and won't be pressured into taking sides."

Published: September 29, 2011 at 1:10am

How did we miss this? Go straight to the 8-minute point on this video and listen to Joseph Muscat mark Jum il-Helsien by saying that Labour won’t take sides “as Libyans fight each other”.

The man is a jerk.

    “Haddijhor”.

    Jaqq.

    • Not Tonight says:

Nohduwwa instead of niehduha. Another ‘Jaqq!’.

Didn’t the idiots who were applauding him realise that by doing nothing we were, in fact, taking sides.

What would he have wanted the rest of the world to do as Ghaddafi slaughtered, kidnapped and raped his own people? Offer his victims a band-aid when it was prudent enough to step in?

It’s bad enough we did so little (at least that we are aware of), we would have done even less with this clown at the helm.

Yes, let’s all watch the school-yard’s bully pummel weaker students and when he’s done, we’ll edge in to offer consolation and perhaps a snack or some sweets. Valuri sodi. Prosit.

In a few years time Muscat (TC 00:46) will look like Goldfinger (TC 00:12):

    Anke l-iljunfanti!

  4. A. Charles says:

    Pachyderms.

  5. Antoine Vella says:

Not thick-skinned, he should have said thick-headed.

  6. Anthony says:

He cut a much better figure during his encounter with Fr Gordon.

  7. Matt says:

Joseph Muscat should have stayed a TV personality.

Definitely, he is no statesman and has no idea where to he wants to take the nation once in office.

How does he plan to raise our standard of living? Or lower our taxes, and help create well-paid jobs in the private sector while simultaneously lowering the deficit?

  8. La Redoute says:

Well, he couldn’t have said we should take advantage of the fighting to divert Libya’s tourism traffic to Malta, could he?

His Egyptian adventure wasn’t too much of a success.

  9. Maltafan says:

How can you take him seriously when he wears that tie?

  10. Pecksniff says:

Is that a drums kit in bottom left hand corner? After the speech, did he do a set like Alfred Sant once did?

  11. MaltaRants says:

@ 10:02 “Ejjew inqdew bina, ma gara xejn … ha nghinukom, mhu ha nfitxu ma hadd”

@ 10:30 “kif ftahna idejna ghad-dinja kollha, hekk ukoll nippretendu, li haddiehor jghin lilna”

Isn’t that a bit contradictory? and to top it all:

“Ahna ghinikom, ahna nkomplu nghinukom, imma intom tridu tghinuna ukoll” @ 11:16

  12. marcus says:

Oh but he was meeting the rebels in the background! Or is it a blatant lie when things seemed clear that the rebels were having the upper hand?

  13. Reporter says:

    Isn’t this a Nationalist speech?

  14. TROY says:

Sorry, but I can’t stand this clown talking rubbish.

  15. Jozef says:

    Matt,

He plans to whine and moan about the difficulties facing the country blaming the Nationalists, EU regulations and the impossibility of reaching a pairing agreement in parliament.

    Wearing his amazing technicolor necktie.

  16. Michael Vassallo says:

In this video Muscat indirectly warns the government not to let foreign forces use Malta as a base, but then when Tripoli fell George Vella had the brass neck to say that as this was a UN-mandated operation Labour would have accepted Malta being used as a base “but was never asked to approve this move”.

We have two contradictory statements made by the same party in the span of a few months.

  17. Riya says:

Ahjar jispjegalna x’kien se jigri mill-pajjiz kieku kien hemm gvern Laburista waqt din il-bicca xoghol tal-Libja. Ghax ibqa cert li kienu johorgu ghonqom ghal Gaddafi u Alla biss jaf x’daqqa kera konna niehdu mad-dinja kollha.

  18. Ghoxrin Punt says:

If Labour wants to show that they are progressive and have moved with the times, I think the time has come for them to stop praising Mintoff but to instead start apologising for what he did to Malta in the latter part of his rule.

  19. Matt says:

Joseph Muscat knows fully well that overall Gonzi is running the country quite well and that his policies are correct for Malta.
Yet he just can’t admit this fact as there will be no reason for the people to change the government and hence he won’t be prime minister.

  20. 'Angus Black says:

Ghoxrin Punt, but you must thank Mintoff for the most generous act of mercy when he turned to ‘traitor’ from ‘saviour’ and booted out the Sant government in 1998.

As for his time in government, that is a piece of history which the LP and its naive followers are trying hard to rewrite or erase.

  21. Steve says:

Please someone tells Joseph that the 80s are over and multi-coloured ties are out of fashion.

  22. Riya says:

Jekk dan Dr. Joseph Muscat irid xi darba jkun kredibli mal-poplu Malti u Ghawdxi, irrid l-ewwel net jaghti canfira lil kapijiet Laburisti kollha ta’ qablu, ghal moghod ta’ kif mexxew il-pajjiz meta kollha kemm huma kienu fil-gvern, u jcafarhom ukoll tat-tahwid li dahlu lil Malta ma’ pajjizi bit-tmexxijiet ditatorjali bhal Libja il-Koea etc.

Imbaghad irid ukoll jiddikjara li jiddisassocja ruhu min ma kull tmexxija Laburista li kellna f’dan il-pajjiz inkluzi certi Ministri korrotti li kellna fi zmien il-gvernijiiet Laburisti u li uhud minnhim ghadhom fil-partit sal-llum. Anzi kien hemm minnhom li rega dahhalhom hu stess.

Irid ukoll jejdilna jekk kienx partecipi ma’ Alfred Sant meta kien qal li rebah ir-referendum dwar l-Ewropa. Irid ukoll jitlob skuza lil Dr. Laurence Gozi talli kien daqsekk pastas u irresponsabli meta ghajru giddieb fuq il-mezzi tax-xandir Nazzjonali.

Irid jammetti wkoll li Alfred Sant ma huwiex korrett, anzi qed jawweg il-fatti, meta jghid li l-PN ircieva flus min ghand Gaddafi biex jghin lill-PN fil-kampanja ghad-dhul ta’ Malta fl-Unjoni Ewropeja. U fl-ahhar nett irid jammetti wkoll li kien il-PL li rcieva flus kontinwament minghand ir-Regim ta’ Gaddafi biex jiffinanzja attivitajiet tal-PL.

Joseph Muscat ma dahalx fil-PL illum jew il-bierah u dan zgur li kollu huwa ghal konoxxenza tirghu. Jekk Joseph Muscat mhux lest li jaghmel dan allura huwa sinjal car li din il-persuna mhi xejn hlief pupazz tal-mexxeja korroti u nkompetenti ta’ qablu.
