Probably. But, even more than that, it confirms that the huge complex built at Ta’ Qali will be the USA’s command centre for all its dealing with the African Continent.

Fabbrika tal-kappar would be more healthy.

  2. David S says:

Actually that factory site was for what Mintoff had termed “Fabrika ta l-elf” , as it was supposed to employ 1000 persons – which turned out to be just another Mintoffian pie in the sky

    Milk and nut.

Sejrin hziena, gbin. Fabbrika tat-twapet. Monument iehor Mintoffjan.

    • Pecksniff says:

Actually there was a cluster of factories at Ta’ Qali all with a Chinese connection; carpets, water taps, a poor imitation of Mdina Glass, and such like racacnc – this was about mid 70s.

The trouble was nobody bothered to do proper costings and feasability studies before they opened, so much so that cost of production of an ordinary water tap worked out higher than if it was gold plated.

“Il fabbrika ta l-elf” went with the grandiose name of “Malta Spinning and Weaving”. and last but not least we had Metalfond under the aegis of Alfred Sant who found out that economic theory and academia were poles apart from the real world out there – obviously Metalfond never got off the ground.

      • 'Angus Black says:

The sad thing about Sant’s failed ‘economic theory’, is that he still embraces it.

    • John Schembri says:

The factory in that area was Malta Spinning and Weaving, which produced poor quality denim that neither Levis nor Wrangler (Blue Bell) wanted to buy, but yet had to buy on being coerced to do so by Prime Minister Mintoff.

The result was that the privately owned Phoenix Textiles, which really did employ hundreds, closed down for lack of business. Malta Carpets was in a Nissen hut in Ta’ Qali.

Thanks for uploading this Daphne. It made my day :-)

Tat-twapet. U tapit minnhom qieghed id-dar ta’ Censu Moran.

[Daphne – Mhux ta’ Moran biss. I know of one particularly enormous Chinese carpet in the home of a civil servant, now deceased, who was much favoured by the Labour government. It was a gift.]

  8. Fabbrika tac-cikkulata!

  9. Marku says:

How would Laiviera know how large the embassy is? He spends all day cooped up in front of his computer commenting on timesofmalta.com.

[Daphne – He was at the 4th of July party, as consort to his wife, Rini Laiviera, a senior civil servant. Because you know, the Nationalist government only promotes blue-eyed boys and leaves Mrs Victor Laiviera in a dank closet, filing receipts. http://archive.maltatoday.com.mt/2001/0309/people.html ]

  10. mike says:

Ah, like Smart City, I expect that will soon be Mintoffian as well

  11. Dee says:

    Haha, lil elve Laiviera running riot here;

[Daphne – Victor Laiviera is not an elve. He is over 60 and he uses his own name.]
