Some super-sentimental nostalgia, best played at top volume:

Thank you for uploading these Daphne.

Especially Ahseb Fit-Tifel by Shazam. Undoubtedly, one of Malta’s best tracks, ever!

In my very humble opinion, of course :-)

    Hugz,

    Al, ic-chunky

[Daphne – I’m told that the singer is Michael Cohen, now Labour mayor of Birgu. Is this correct, does anyone know? And if so, WHAT HAPPENED? I love that song.]

  2. The other kev says:

Someone should really re-master / remix these tracks as they are not bad at all. These people were pioneers in those low tech days and probably never got their money’s worth for their efforts.

  3. Al B says:

Isn’t the mayor of Birgu is Mr. Boxall? Mr. Cohen is the Kalkara mayor. I know this because that’s where I live :-)

Great song though, all the same, without a hint of an ”innu”

    Hugz,

    Al, ic-chunky

Daphne, the singer’s name was Martin. He used to live in Gzira. He died five years ago.

  5. Rita Camilleri says:

I’m listening to Calypso Radio and they’re playing Ahseb fit-Tifel…

  6. P Shaw says:

Sammy Bartolo had a golden voice.

I don’t know why, but these songs bring back a lot of sad memories of my childhood. They were practically the soundtrack of the Xandir Malta and the Rediffusion radio services of the time.

I remember particularly clearly a programme called “L-għażla tas-semmiegħa” which used to air at 8 every morning. Most of these songs would feature in every edition.

They remind me of when the church school I used to attend was closed by KMB, of the tension there was everywhere you went, of when my mum used to send me to the general store across the street to buy expired tinned corned beef because of the bulk buying system adopted by the Socialist government. I was seven or eight years old at the time.

It’s ironic that listening to them again, decades later, I am able to appreciate them musically, but they still bring back those memories.

  8. Anna says:

Much as I’ve always hated living on this rock, I still love this patriotic song

  11. Dee says:

Sorry, but these songs bring up the worse in me. Reminds me of the Radio Malta of the Golden Socialist era.The only exception is L’ahhar bidwi ta’ Wied-il-Ghasel

  12. Kenneth Cassar says:

“Ahseb fit-tifel” and “L-ahhar bidwi f’Wied il-Ghasel” – my all time favourite Maltese songs. Thanks for the memories.

  13. David S says:

How true – L-ahhar bidwi f’Wied il-Ghasel. Wied il-Ghasel no longer exists today. It’s been turned into a quarry, and is now called Hardrocks.
Shame that this valley no longer there.
