Edward Scicluna was already a ‘granpa cat’ when Robert Plant played Madison Square Garden in 1973

Led Zeppelin’s Thank You is one of my all-time favourite tracks. I was four years old when it was released in 1969. When they played Madison Square Garden in 1973 (this video), I was eight.

This song is more than 42 years old. But when it was released, Edward Scicluna – the new candidate on whom the Labour Party is pinning its hopes – was already getting a bit long in the tooth by the standards of that time.

He was 23.

When this footage was recorded in 1973, he was 27 – over the hill, by the yardstick of those days. Already, in 1969, he was older than most of the members of Forum Zghazagh Laburisti today.

The timeframe should boggle their minds, but they’re so desperate that it doesn’t.

They’re selling themselves as young, fresh, modern and progressive, and then their star candidate is old enough to be is-Sahhara tal-Bidnija’s father.

Even I think Edward Scicluna is old, for heaven’s sake, and I’m in my late 40s.

I just can’t understand the Labour Party. They stick a shallow Super One sod in his 30s in the leadership position, then go out with bell, book and candle to round up men in their 60s like Karmenu Vella and Edward Scicluna to be the star candidates.

A 72-year-old minister of finance? A 68-year-old minister of industry?

THIS is the earthquake?

Search, Search Daphne….until now no argument about the Profs will suffice any floating voter not to vote him……ejja Daphne ghamel siegha ohra fittex ….qalleb fil history tieghu u x ghamel fil Parlament tal Ewropa forsi ma tafx kif ….tuzax wikipeida ehhhh ghax dak mhux reliable

[Daphne – I don’t really have to, BC. I’ve been doing this job since 1990. I didn’t start with this blog.]

There is one word which describes Professor Scicluna sufficiently, based on how he comes across. He is a pessimist. He is not someone who has any enthusiasm or confidence in the country. Which means that his budgets will make no social justice and he will be stingy. He will implement the MEAN part of Joseph’s lean and mean government.

Is this a guest post by Lou Bondi?

[Daphne – Lou and I share similar interests in music. It’s allowed for girls, you know.]

I guess I must be Daphne too, because Thank You is my favourite Led Zeppelin song by a long shot (followed by I Can’t Quit You Baby and Dazed and Confused, because I love me some heavy blues-influenced rock)

      Hmm, I think I smell a rat…

I posted this already but somehow was not uplaoded. But if Mario Draghi at 64 can be elected for an 11 year term to the ECB, then Ol’ Prof Scicluna can surely cope with tiny Malta. Have him anyday instead of our resident auditor Tonio Fenech. I cringe every time as seen him with Europe’s best financial minds at ECOFIN.

[Daphne – It was uploaded, and I even took the time and trouble to reply.]

If I were in the higher echelons of the Nationalist party I would avoid attacking Edward Scicluna now. Let a few days pass first. If you come out immediately like they did in the Mument this morning with the abortion story one looks desperate (and somewhat pathetic also).

[Daphne – No, actually one looks on the ball (nothing to do with Franco’s linfa). Nobody bothered with him before because he wasn’t a contender. Now that he is a contender, one bothers. Why delay your reaction? My reaction is immediate, now, for instance. And that’s the whole point of a blog. ‘What do you think about Edward Scicluna’s bid to become finance minister at 67, Daphne?’ ‘Oh, I’ll tell you in a few months’ time, so that DV doesn’t think I look desperate and somewhat pathetic also.’]

    • DV says:

I wasn’t referring to you, Daphne but to the Nationalist party and its newspaper. A blog is different, one can post any time of the day and night and reactions are instantaneous. On the other hand changing your front page at the eleventh hour has a different ring to it I think…

[Daphne – Er, how shall I put this kindly? Changing your front page at the 11th hour when need dictates it is what newspapers DO. Sometimes, they even have to print at somebody else’s press at 7am when their own press has been burned down by a mob. Now that’s really desperate.]

Here is one who understands well the position of comrade George, while the markets, the media, and all rational EU analysts were shocked.

Instead of insisting that the PIIGS take the measures necessary to re-balance their budgets and restore confidence in their economy, he suggests the typical socialist solution, that the nordic countries should ruin their budgets to subsidise the excesses of the PIIGS. Great vision from the Professor.

The first thing he has to do is to explain how to extend maternity leave without adding costs to employers AND taxpayers. Joseph said Edward had the system.

I’m still trying to work that out.

  7. Bellicoso says:

I am I big fan of the blog and all but weren’t the ‘bell book and candle’ used in excommunications by the Church? On second thoughts that is exactly what labour should have done with these dinosaurs.

This one has an excellent coda.

Rock stars can go on beyond 40 in a stylish way. But they must be English.

[Daphne – Goodness, I’ve just realised that Robert Plant is TWO YEARS YOUNGER THAN EDWARD SCICLUNA.]
