The Concordia captain is ordered back on board his sinking ship, and refuses – recorded conversation with coast guard

If Italian mammoni had a terrible reputation already, the catastrophic case of the captain who ordered his cruise liner to be steered close to dangerous rocks so that his head-waiter could see his home island, and who then deserted the sinking ship and refused orders to go back on board, is going to do them no favours at all.
In this recorded conversation, the captain whimpers about how dark it is and makes excuses to stay where he is, while the commander of the Livorno coast guard yells at him to climb back on board and says with angry sarcasm “Do you want to go home, Schettino? It’s dark, and you want to go home?”

Telefonata tal-misthija! Ghandhom biex jiftahru li jingaggaw kaptan ta’ dan it-tip. Veru bahri tal-bahar bnazzi.
In Malta its the other way round. The ship is definitely sinking but the captain keeps refusing to leave the ship.
The more he clings to the ship and its creature comforts, the deeper the ship sinks under the weight of the captain and his crew!
[Daphne – Madonna, how tedious this Labour propensity towards parable and metaphor is. You’re not talking to 818 Labour delegates like Toni Abela was.]
Coraggio fuggiamo
Tell that to the civil protection personnel who bravely and selflessly worked through the night and the days after to save as many people as possible…
Are you watching this interview?

Pathetic, self-inflated egocentric twats – the two of them.
Watch the whole interview and you will see how Saver is putting the answers to the same questions he is asking the Honourable Twat before letting him speak, so the Honourable Twat can answer likewise.
And Franco, if you read this, please don’t go and cry in front of some Super One camera, or ask the prime minister to condemn anyone.
I was a on a Costa Cruise a couple of years ago and I didn’t get the best impression of this company.
Once aboard the ship everything ran smoothly but when the passengers had to disembark to go on excursions, it was a total disaster. There was such a big confusion and the waiting time to leave the ship was so long.
The passengers who booked the excursions with Costa were given the first preference to leave the ship but the rest which was a very big number of passengers were left waiting till someone decided to let us go. This happened in those harbours were there isn’t a berthing place for the cruise liners so passengers has to catch a launch to be transported to land.
I complained even in writing about this situation, but no one bothered to contact me back.
If they were not able to handle this particular situation, what would happen in case of a disaster aboard the ship?
Hi Daphne, no column on TMI today?
……it’s only Wednesday
He steers the ship into a reef at over 16 knots.
His version related how It took him half an hour to realise he was taking in water, managed to turn her around and reach draft depth. Disaster struck when she keeled over.
There’s reports of mutiny by all his officers, except his second, who raised the alarm a full fifteen minutes before he sounded the abandon ship. He could have been drinking.
Could have? I’d say it’s pretty evident that he was, given the way he spoke in that recorded call.
If all this weren’t so sad and tragic, that conversation would make a fine Fantozzi sketch.
Daphne, can you send Franco’s details to Capitano Schettino, please.
decor….decor my friend.
Apologies, on second thoughts I would rather send Franco’s contact details to Capitano Schettino’s mother to inform her that ‘abbiamo un avvocato con le palle’.
As an attachment I would include his Form IIC report card.
Oooops sorry, thought it was Thursday.
It’s wonderful how time flies when you’re having fun, Brian.
Its like GonziPN. They are trying to run away to Tunesia, etc and people are calling them back to face reality.
Postponing the vote of confidence is just another sign how they are trying to run away and escape.
[Daphne – Escape from what, Frank.]
What does GonziPN have to do with the Costa Concordia tragedy, Frank?
How is the negligence by the captain that caused the death of people (not to mention the trauma to the survivors) related to the political events in Malta?
I’m sure the victims’ people would appreciate you being disrespectful enough to twist this article into yet another PL campaign if they saw this Frank.
WIth people like you no wonder PL was kept at bay for 25 years.
Jeez.
Maybe from losing power? Or maybe from losing contracts? Or just maybe trying to avoid that someone else inaugurates the oil rig in Valletta?
[Daphne – Has ‘a sense of responsibility’ occurred to you? Because it has occurred to me. After all, look what’s waiting in the wings. It’s like giving up, walking out on a project while saying f**k this, I don’t need this sh*t, and letting the cowboys take over.]
I think a response to Maltatoday’s allegations is in order?
[Daphne – Yes, they’ll see me in court.]

Do you reckon Karmenu Vella is spending more time working on the electoral programme or on rebooking his Orange Travel clients on another ship?
Someone should ring him up to find out.
