Two of the funniest comments I’ve received tonight

Published: January 11, 2012 at 2:13am

For God's sake, mother, will you get that phone? I'm hardly in a position to respond here.

He has a brother? Then he can’t be Jesus. God must resign.

to be clear i dont agree with franco debono act and he should resign, i think a person can tell his superior / boss / manager to resign, if the employe / mp or whoever is, is not feeling comfortable within his club / party, and dosent want to follow the rules, the employe should resign from his post, not the boss. but im making it clear the way you speak full of hatred towards those who dosent agree with you, is shameful ! get your topics out without insulting those who dosent agree with you, jekk taf kif !

    • Rover says:

You read this blog for the same reason I do – because you get an insight into people’s character that you get nowhere else.

Franco is clearly a ridiculous twat who made a huge mistake only to go on TV on a daily basis and dig himself an even bigger hole.

Ask yourself whether you would engage such a self-obsessed man in court or anywhere else for that matter.

    Is all the blasphemy necessary?

[Daphne – Blasphemy? What, so we’re Muslim fundamentalists now?]

    • Patrik says:

Perhaps not necessary, but absolutely funny.

Although, didn’t Jesus have brothers mentioned in the bible (at most half brothers, but still).

    • Rachel says:

      No, we’re not, but it’s still offending…

    • yeled shovav says:

How is showing respect for the earnest beliefs of others a sign of “Muslim fundamentalism”?

It all just seems quite rude, and tacky.

[Daphne – That’s not how you show respect for other people’s beliefs.]

      • yeled shovav says:

Not mocking their god (for no better reason than making fun of some delusional politician) would a step in the right direction.

[Daphne – Oh, I see! You didn’t get the joke then. The man on the cross is Franco Debono, not Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ figures nowhere. Crucifixion was a very common form of execution. Now if their god is Franco Debono, then…]

      • yeled shovav says:

        would be* a

    • yeled shovav says:

You’re being willful and contrary, but it’s your blog and I’m sure that’s all part of the fun.

[Daphne – No, really. The man on the cross is supposed to be Franco. All this (pseudo) offence is the result of ignorance. People simply do not know that crucifixion was a routine form of execution. Let’s say Christ had been hanged instead of crucified. Would it then be offensive to make jokes about hanging? Surely not, Similarly, it is not offensive to make jokes about crucifixion.]

      • yeled shovav says:

When was the last time you saw a crucifixion being carried out? They’re not a routine method of execution – countries which still go in for that kind of thing content themselves with electric chairs and lethal injections.

[Daphne – When was the last time you saw a hanging? But noose jokes are the norm. The fact is that in European culture, ‘crucified’ is now a synonym for suffering. Hanging is not a synonym for suffering. Nor is lethal injection or the electric chair.]

The Western world (and I’m including Malta here) has one crucifixion in mind when the image of a man borne on a cross is displayed, and that’s the figure of Jesus Christ.

[Daphne – Not at all. There were another two men at his side, for a start. And as I said, ‘crucified’ has entered the language and is divorced from Christ.]

I don’t think it’s comparable in any way to other images because it has obsessed the cultural imagination of Christendom (again, Malta’s being included here) for over two thousand years.

[Daphne – Not for the last several hundred years. Crucifixes are part of Roman Catholic culture only. The rest of Christianity uses the cross.]

While it’s nowhere near as central today as it once was, that’s a lot of baggage to dismiss by claiming it’s a joke – one that might be funny but is, I think, in poor taste.

[Daphne – Your comment about poor taste is interesting. Not that long ago, I wrote an article about how I think crucifixes to be in appalling taste – or rather, their display in humdrum situations like classrooms and kitchens. There is no getting away from the fact that what we have here is a realistic representation of a tortured man who has been savagely nailed to a piece of wood. This is no sort of thing to enjoy in a bedroom or kitchen unless you are a sadist or utterly insensitive to the suffering and horror it represents, and it is entirely inappropriate to have around children, because it will either train them to be indifferent to gross torture or give them nightmares. Mostly, they become indifferent to over-exposure, and that’s bad. I have a passionate dislike of crucifixes because I think they are in appalling taste. But crosses are something else, and I have plenty of those. The cross is the symbol of Christianity. The crucifix is a representation of torture and death. It should never be used as a decorative item.]

      • Roland Wadge says:

Too close for comfort really Daphne! The association with using a picture of the hanged Christ to make this joke (in bad taste) was probably an error of judgement on your part. However from what you have been writing I feel that you never intended to offend, but please appreciate that other people can get hurt. An apology would be in order.

    • yeled shovav says:

Although I don’t agree with some of your replies to my post (“the rest of Christianity uses the cross” as though it doesn’t point to the same event of crucifixion etc), I was very interested by the last thing you wrote.

I don’t think crucifixes should be “decorative”, they seem highly mystical objects. Contemplation of that suffering and horror appears necessary, to a Catholic world-view, because the Son of God underwent a horrific Passion in order to fulfill his mission as the suffering servant. It is perfectly contextualised within that belief system, where suffering itself can become the substance of redemption.

And while I also agree that the cross, without a bleeding and broken corpus, is altogether more appealing I can’t help but wonder whether it loses some important truth along with the body it’s supposed to bear.

    • Franco says:

Please tell us more about the ‘declaration’ you are expecting. Is this ‘declaration’ about Daphne or about this blog or about the picture here or maybe a long awaited one regarding sexual abuse of minors?

If it were a picture of Buddha it would be funny to you, or a picture of Krishna or something Islam-related. But when it comes to your own belief it’s a whole different story, isn’t it.

Are you ashamed of yourselves when you giggle or laugh at other people’s beliefs?

You should understand that not all people share them, and even some of those who do still manage to have a sense of humour.

  23. mattie says:

This site must be the most popular in Malta at the moment. Congratulations!

  24. Teresa Pace says:

Dear Ms Galizia…the comment may look funny to you…but you Ms high and mighty, who thinks that you have reached the stars, you will forgotten immediately by the time you are buried. Him (not ashamed to say that He is my beloved Jesus because He has taken my place, your place and everybody’s including those who mock Him) hasn’t been forgotten after 2000 years…He has billions of followers! You will be reduced to dust but He is in His glorified body in Heaven. Do you think that everyone will find these comments funny? Far from it. You have offended me and you have offended a good number. You ought to be sued and fired! You time of glory will soon be over but His glory never!!

[Daphne – Ma, xi dwejjaq. I arranged my life to get away from this kind of thing, live for years oblivious to it, then suddenly get a nasty reminder that the peasants are still out there with their crucifixes and pitchforks. Isn’t it possible to believe in God and Christianity without sounding like the member of some weird sect, Teresa? Think about it.]

    • Life of Brian says:

My name is God. I don’t do libel suits.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

Here’s something that has yet to be explained to me. Is it at all necessary for a God to kill his son, in order to forgive someone else? Couldn’t God simply forgive?

Please explain this, Teresa, since you take the liberty in writing that Jesus has taken my place too.

[Daphne – It’s rooted in the Canaanite/Punic tradition of fathers sacrificing their first-born son. The tradition carried on in the Punic/Phoenician settlements in North Africa. There are cemeteries of sacrificed children and contemporaneous accounts of it, including how the mothers had to be drugged or physically restrained. I suppose you knew that, though Teresa almost certainly does not. I wouldn’t bother getting into a religious best-fest, though. Why challenge people whose belief is simplistic? You are never going to have a proper or fair debate, so just let it go.]

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

Yes, Daphne, I knew that, and yes, you are right about the futility of going into long discussions about this.

The irony is that they don’t get it that you’re mocking Franco, not Jesus. And the picture is perfect for the purpose, for the following reasons:

        1. Franco Debono seems to think he’s a Godsend to humanity – hence the picture.

        2. Franco Debono thinks he’s being “sacrificed” (crucified) for the good of others – hence the picture.

        3. A crucified person can’t answer the phone (and Franco’s keeps ringing) – sheer brilliance…whoever came up with this deserves a prize.

Of course, one does need to have a good sense of humour to appreciate this, and not to take offence.

[Daphne – Yes, and because of my own distaste for depictions of men being tortured to death, I also searched hard to find a picture that is as oblique as possible. I’m telling you that it wasn’t easy; short of resorting to 16th-century paintings’ the rest were in seriously poor taste, to quote a crucifix fan commenting here.]

      • Teresa Pace says:

I prefer that my beliefs are too ‘simplistic’ dear Ms Galizia. Remember to Old Testament…that part of the bible written WAY back before Jesus came here on Earth…well the prophecy of Jesus as the saviour is mentioned numbers of times…can’t tell you the exact number…His place of birth, what will happen to Him everything is prophesised in the OT.
Why God wanted Jesus to die for us? First of all Jesus willed it, willed to say yes for all our no’s, He did it freely…He freely gave up His life. Second God wanted to experience us human beings, how we lived, how we felt…He wanted to experience our joy, our sufferings, our death…because He wanted communion with us….such a close relationship. But then I’m simplistic…I rather be simplistic Ms Galizia and believe in the Truth :-) Was I too over simplistic? Good!!

[Daphne – Watch the video under the heading Eerie, Teresa. It features a man called Charles Manson, who led a sect of women just like you.]

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

And Teresa proves you right, Daphne. Best to let it go. To each his own.

      • emz says:

“well the prophecy of Jesus as the saviour is mentioned numbers of times…can’t tell you the exact number…His place of birth, what will happen to Him everything is prophesised in the OT.”
I can very easily write a story today which meets all the ‘requirements’ which you call prophecies enlisted in the OT. Doesn’t prove anything. You’re wrong about this btw..but anyway..

“He did it freely…He freely gave up His life”
I taught he asked god/his father if it was necessary just before he died??? “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

“Second God wanted to experience us human beings, how we lived, how we felt…He wanted to experience our joy, our sufferings, our death…”
God wanted to experience??What? really?? you think an all powerful god wants something? you really think that he needs to be sacrificed in order to understand what we feel? I taught you believed in an omnipotent god!

do I really deserve to be punished for something I did not commit? Does the death of another human being undo the wrongs I have done?

      • Teresa Pace says:

@ emz not with the precision of the prophecies however. This was not like any other prophecies…adapting what was said to Jesus, these well actual prophecies of events which actually took place…and found their fullfillment in Jesus Christ.

Yes as a human person He was afraid…so much so that He sweated blood. But He still FREELY said yes to the will of the Father. No one took His life away…He freely opened His arms to be crucifed. At any point during His torture or on the cross He could have called the angels to take Him away from that pain…but He freely said a complete yes…to make up for our no’s.

God is omnipotent…but He still wanted to experience what we felt HIMSELF. He loves us so much that He became one of us and died for us. He wants such communion with us, such a close relationship that He became one of us. There is no greater love than to give up your life for your friend…and Jesus went way further than that…He gave up His life for everyone including His enemies, including when we were against Him…that is what is so great about His love.

Jesus was a human being…and He is God…while He walked amongst us it was God walking amongst us in Jerusalem. He was not just a human being. To show His love for us He gave up His life for us…it was Him who gave up His life for us.

    • Teresa Pace says:

I just stated facts my dear Daphne..how come I got the honour of getting a reply from you…clock is ticking…towards your end and my end come to think of it. Afraid of what comes after? No my dear I’m not part of any weird sect…I just follow Him :-) xx

[Daphne – Strange how religous mania and political hdura share the same linguistic traits.]

    • Charles Darwin says:

      Teresa, are you for real?

Daphne, you must be making these up! Please tell me you are, please!

[Daphne – No. They’re Jeffrey PO’s Facebook friends and coming in here via link to this post, which he put on his wall with the command ISTHI!!!!! (miskin).]

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s Facebook friends, are they. Sweet irony. A few months ago, religious fanatics would have directed “ISTHI” to him because of his support for divorce. Some people never learn.

      • Teresa Pace says:

Are you paranoid or something Ms Daphne? Sorry to burst your bubble…I have the same political beliefs that you do believe me…however you did insult me with the picture of Jesus and the comments. The picture is of Jesus…you meant it to be of Jesus although now you are saying otherwise. And yes Charles Darwin I’m for real…for one thing I did’t use a fake name like you because I’m proud of my beliefs and not afraid of expressing them in public…even if there is alot of name calling….keep those names coming no problem :-)

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

        @ Teresa Pace:

“I have the same political beliefs that you do believe me”.

Trust me, you almost certainly don’t, even though you might vote for the same party.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Can we have Dr Francis Saliba MD’s review of this exquisite missive?

      • Kenneth Cassar says:

Please, no. He’d say his piece and then tell us we’re pretending not to understand, or spinning and weaving, or something of the sort.

  25. Chris says:

    Seriously… bad taste!

  26. mattie says:

Teresa, you got the stick from the wrong end. Think before you write.

  27. Yazzy says:

I actually found that quite funny. Daphne, you might offend a few uptight people but you entertain many others. And they might insult you and your work, yet they find/make the time to read it.

  28. zoids says:

[Daphne – Clearly, there is another kind of person out there, who is now migrating here from Facebook in response to links posted on walls. Aaron and Nakita should take note that their new elves seem to be a rather inferior sort, though with an equally limited vocabulary.]

  30. carm tal buzz politiku says:

However i find it highly unprofessional this picture you brought up. Well, i guess it reflects the type of audience you wont to attract.. after all its your blog not mine!

[Daphne – That’s right. Oh, and I have an audience already. Also, ‘highly unprofessional’ is not an insult that can be randomly used. The context here is not appropriate.]

  32. ciculina says:

  33. Franco says:

This post is funny but the re-action by some so-called Catholics is even more hilarious.

  34. Bored says:

its funny how some do all their best and build up a career to have the reputation of being intelligent and sarcastic but only us the stupid bored people are appreciating it

  35. Just Me says:

Some comments here are really evil.

I cannot believe that most of the people here who claim to be Christians and Catholics have written down some of the most venomous, hurtful and offensive things like ‘zibla’, ‘mara hazina’, ‘hamalla’ etc.

[Daphne – That’s because they’re not ‘Christians and Catholics’ but Laburisti hodor. That’s why the writing style is so familiar.]

These are the people that make me ashamed to say that I believe in the same religion. If the comments and the picture bothered you so much you should have politely asked for it not to be repeated again because it has offended you or even better, not read the blog in the first place if you are finding it continuously offensive.

Instead, many have chosen to stoop to the low level of offending people and calling them names.

I think we need to be more tolerant of the people who don’t share the same beliefs. Live and let live.

After all, being tolerant and accepting everyone IS in the religion many claim to follow, unlike being mean and offensive and judgmental.

    • ciccio says:

  37. jes says:

Daphne, you went a little bit too far with this one, don’t get me wrong cause I admire you because you’ve got balls, but seeing that the Maltese people are still a little bit close minded, you could have addressed this matter in a different way , but still keep up the good work :)

[Daphne – ‘The Maltese people’ posting these subliterate responses are Laburisti hodor coming in through Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s Facebook wall. Their motivation is not religious but political. I am a Maltese person and I think the jokes are hilarious. They are not regular readers of this website and they are so poorly educated that they are unable to work out that the joke and the picture are about Franco (and his mother) and not about Christ (and his).]

  38. Daniel says:

  47. Teresa Pace says:

To everyone….can you please stop with this name calling? If you are purely disgusted at the picture of Jesus because you are true catholics/christians you shouldn’t be calling any her any offensive names. Politics as such I don’t care about…I did not even read what she wrote about…but the picture and the comments on the picture….that is a totally different story. Please STOP this offensive language like hamalla and the many curses you mentioned! Not christian at all!

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

“I did not even read what she wrote about…but the picture and the comments on the picture…”

Context is everything, dear Teresa. So if you took the time to read what she wrote about in the past few days, you might feel less offended, or not offended at all. Then again, you might not.

  48. Teresa Pace says:

She shouldn’t have used the picture of Jesus…He deserves our worship and honour and not being mocked at with those kind of comments.

  49. raymond says:

I think Franco Debono is reflecting the majority of the Maltese people as it is today. Maltese people are fed up with the arrogance of this government. In Malta after an election there is five years of dictator ship. There should be people like Franco Debono who have balls and if they think they are right they should not hide behind the partit like many did in this legislation. Today is Franco maybe next time it should be one of the laborite. Daphne I do not read your blogs or whatever, but a lot of people do hate you. I should ask you if you have a mirror of your own (on the wall) and if so go look through it. It might help you.

[Daphne – One of the most trying aspects of this blog is having to deal with people who have never read anything I’ve written but who think they know what I think all the same, because they heard the gossip on Facebook. Or Super One. Whether people hate me or not is irrelevant to me because I am not after their vote, but more pertinently because I don’t care. If I did, I would have stopped doing this job 20 years ago. Also, do not presume to speak for ‘the Maltese people’ when what you mean is you and your friends. The opinion of ‘the Maltese people’ can be sought only through surveys and elections, or referendums.]
