“You did it by telling the truth”

When Joseph Daul, chairman of the European People’s Party Group in the European Parliament (this is the group of which the Nationalist Party forms part; Labour is in the Socialist Group), presented the Schuman Award to Eddie Fenech Adami a couple of days ago, he said:

“You did it by telling the truth. We haven’t forgotten the Labour party’s opposition to EU membership.”

I can tell you, I haven’t forgotten either. I sometimes still have nightmares about the yawning hell of Labour’s alternative – no EU membership – trumping the Yes vote to lock us out for another two generations or more.

What made it even more distressing at the time was that men with their future behind them, of whom Labour’s hierarchy is mainly made up, thought nothing of ruining the future of young people, while young men as Joseph Muscat then was treated it all like a game, not the life-or-death scenario with fatal consequences that it really was.

We won’t forget the burning of the EU flag by the PL that quickly too.

Eddie Fenech Adami receives the Schuman Award. Dom Mintoff receives the Gaddafi Human Rights prize.

That just about sums it up.

On many major political issues, Joseph Muscat has shown that his vision has at least two problems: he is short sighted, and he sees things with hindsight.
