Ah, so it wasn’t about principles and the state of play in home affairs, after all, was it?

Published: June 1, 2012 at 12:09pm

Franco Debono has spent the last few months trying to convince us that his problem with Carm Mifsud Bonnici is the state of play in the home affairs ministry.

That would make it a matter of principle.

Then, after he voted, he turned to Mifsud Bonnici and said to him clearly and in front of other MPs: “Hekk, biex tkun taf x’jigifieri taghmilli hsara mal-Prim Mhallef.”

That makes it vengeance, not principle.

Then I revealed on this website that, far from this being about principle and the operations of the home affairs ministry, he was actually using his vote as leverage to get himself positions of what he thinks is importance (because he’s from Hal Ghaxaq and his world view is constricted).

He ASKED, through the good offices of a mediator, to be appointed deputy chairman of AZAD and to accompany the prime minister and Simon Busuttil, the actual chairman, to meetings with organisations.

He also ASKED, through a mediator, to be made Leader of the House instead of Carm Mifsud Bonnici.

He DEMANDED that the prime minister condemn me publicly for what I wrote (imagine that).

So it is obvious that this is not about principle at all – not that most of us ever thought it was, but some people did. When you’re acting on a matter of principle, you don’t use your decision as a threat for leverage to get something for yourself.

This is, in effect, what Franco has communicated:

I am voting against Carm Mifsud Bonnici because I don’t like the way he’s running the home affairs ministry, but if you pay me, I’ll change my mind.

And then he’s surprised that, as he told The Times, he “lost access to the prime minister”.

He’s such a whore, isn’t he. Well, this is cock-fighting culture for you.

In The Times today, he makes out that all these things were “proposed” to him. Like hell they were.

Perhaps the prime minister has come round to understanding something very important: that every time he tries to mollify or appease this jerk, he loses public respect, it erodes his dignity, and gives him a Beta Male image in the eyes of the electorate.

At this point, what non-Labour supporters would really like to see the prime minister do is publicly wipe the floor with Franco Debono, because they are sick to the back teeth of seeing Franco Debono wipe the floor with him by holding out the threat of bringing down the government.

There is a new party in parliament – DebonoPL – and the sooner Franco is treated like the Trojan horse he is, the better.

That’s exactly what I thought when I read The Times this morning. It has always been about him. His principles are just a convenient excuse. That Malta Independent article was certainly an eye opener.

One hopes that the political parties will be more careful about whom they choose to contest the election in the future.

  2. Matt says:

Franco is a loser to the end. Thank goodness the PM did not give in an inch.

Muscat and his team are increasingly vindictive. People don’t trust Labour so they are trying to do everything to bring the government down. For the last four years they have been trying these malicious gimmicks.

They are not progressive, they are just old evil Labour.

    • FP says:

But that’s the point: the PM HAS been giving inches, and more than that, even yards.

It’s time for the PM to BE the PM and pull the rope back and get rid of this self-centred primadonna once and for all.

    You know what ?

When the dust has finally settled and the next election is called and is over with, whenever that comes and irrespective of the outcome, one thing is certain: Franco Debono will have disappeared into oblivion while Carm Mifsud Bonnici will be vindicated by the voters.

Trojan horse? Trojan ass you mean.

  5. Pat says:

The Prime Minister comes across as putting the good of the island above everything else, including I am sure above his own personal feelings.

You really have to admire that.

I consider myself to be extremely patient, but by now I’m sure I would have called his bluff and dared him to do his worst.

So this is what it is all about?

Nitqahhab biex noqghod indur mal-big boys – attaparsi ara kemm jien importanti.

Wara nipprova inkisser karriera ta’ Ministru ghax “I lost access to the PM’.

He should never have been given access in the first place.

I am certain that when the dust settles, Carm Mifsud Bonnici will return to political business and Fucking Dick will return to being a country bumpkin type of lawyer.

I’m starting a Stop Daphne From Writing About Franco petition.

Forms can be collected from any mental institution or go to http://www.iamfuckencrazy.com for more info.

  8. ray says:

Dr. Gonzi should come out and tell us what really happened. No use beating about the bush and treating this **** with kid gloves. If Franco blows his top and votes against the government, triggering an election, than so be it. Win or lose, we’ll be rid of this bastard.

  9. Francis Saliba MD says:

It should be obvious to all that it is the height of folly to try to appease someone with the mind-set being exhibited by Dr Franco Debono.

To people of my age that is reminscent of Britain and France trying to appease an insatiable Adolf Hitler annexing one neighbouring after another, on each occasion promising that it was his “last” demand.

That serial appeasment did not prevent World War II.

  10. Mrs M says:

I like your newly coined word ‘DebonoPL’.

[Daphne – It’s not mine. Lou Bondi used it on his show last night, and I filched it.]

  11. P Shaw says:

Unfortunately the PM’s image is already tarnished.

He has appeased Franco Debono (and Jeffrey) for far too long. He is now perceived as weak. I fear it is too late to change that perception.

    • pat says:

Why is it that in Malta, if you don’t yell, stamp your feet and generally behave like Attila the Hun you’re considered weak? It takes far greater strength of character to behave in a gentlemanly manner.

  12. Manuel Camilleri says:

Dr. Gonzi should have taken the bull by the horns long time ago. This guy will keep the PM guessing even come this Monday.

  13. Karmenu says:

Fuck off you and your damn family dead and alive and future relatives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Foxx il-hdura l-ghandek – fittex xxx ja qahba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Daphne – Careful, because you’re going to give yourself a haemmorrhage.]

  14. Jozef says:

It seems Franco wants his own Labour Party. Now that Joseph got his.
