Franco Debono, speaking on TVM’s Dissett last night:

“I don’t need any party forgiveness, because I didn’t do anything wrong… I was the sacrificial lamb”.

Daphne, totally off the point here – but my contribution to the RCC saga.

It seems to me that the only honourable person to come out of this whole affair is Richard Cachia Caruana.

His integrity, honesty and “patria” are beyond reproach.

I have criticised the PN on several occasions when this was due and I have also criticised the Labour Party.

I am speaking from afar, have no vote but a considerable interest in the future well being of the land of my birth.

This is not only a sad day for the PN but also a sad day for Malta. It shows that the body politic – especially in the opposition – has still not yet matured.

So it is even a sadder day for the Labour Party. The LP has denied itself the potential opportunity to have some continuance in its forthcoming and ongoing negotiations with Europe.

It has now totally proven its ineffectiveness, its political ineptitude and its “whatever it takes” approach to power.

They have stabbed themselves in the back even before being elected to Government. For this and many other reasons they do not deserve to govern. They have shown their true colours – i.e totally inexperienced, absolutely no clue, and decisions based on revenge and vindictive approaches to their opponents.

The language in the press seems to indicate that the next election is a foregone conclusion.

Is it really? For this the electorate will punish them I am sure. As for the next election – it’s not over till its over.

The best thing that could happen is for the PN to win the next election and not because the PN deserve it.

Another loss for the LP will ensure that they will finally learn the lesson and start again with a totally clean sweep – not a half hearted one with geriatric stains going back to pre 1987.

Then and only then will they deserve the power of incumbency.

As for JPO, Mugliett and Debono, although they have proven that democracy and freedom within a political party is alive and healthy within the Maltese body politic, something I heartily supported some time ago, they have used and abused this for all the wrong reasons. Can Gonzi pull a rabbit out of the hat?

    • Freda says:

What a very good picture you have depicted Mr Raphael! I agree with you 100%

    • kev says:

“His integrity, honesty and “patria” are beyond reproach.”

Never mind ‘integrity’ and ‘honesty’, but ‘patria’? If you think ‘patria’ ever crossed his mind, then hold on to your Cuckooland citizenship for it might come in use.

The man represented the Commission, not the government – and certainly not the ‘patria’. His replacement will likewise be the Commission’s man. Why? Because we’re the most lackey ‘nation’ in the EU and we just love being told what to do.

      • Raphael Dingli says:

Well, if I live in Cuckooland – how would you describe to use your words “the most lackey nation” to describe your land, Kev.

The man may may have represented the Commission but was appointed by The Maltese Government – either by the PM or the Foreign Minister in this case.

Who was he responsible to? The PM or the Foreign Minister – certainly not the Parliament as he had no seat.

Another thing – in most democracies the buck stops with either the PM (the top rung) or the Foreign Minister.

It seems that in this case the Labour Party has dropped the bar on the level of responsibility.

Could this be their strategy for when (if) they hold the reigns of power – protect themselves and blame the bureaucrats and or advisers?

On the matter of citizenship – I actually hold two passports – so in the event of any major catastrophy I am in the position to choose as I hold both.

  4. John Schembri says:

And I thought Franco was projecting himself as some Jean-Jacques Rousseau trying to pull down the oligarchy from the PN, stupid me.

  5. mandango70 says:

Yes, and what about Gonzi’s deafening silence to FD’s claim that the Lawrence Gonzi is in favour of FD contesting again on the PN ticket?

I tend to think Franco’s lying, yet Gonzi doesn’t have the guts to deny such a claim. He’d rather just let it pass unnoticed.

This is what you get when you have people wearing more than one hat.

BTW is this some sort of trend : call me Charlie or Charles?

    • A. Charles says:

Charlie or Charles in Malta is usually Karmenu on the ID card.

    • edward clemmer says:

It seems that the Times of Malta rejected my post to Charlie Azzopardi at about 18:30 on the 25th of June.

I won’t reconstruct my arguments one day later, except for two observations:

      (1) Dr. Azzopardi seems to construct his arguments on the basis of the conclusions he wishes to reach, rather than proceding from more objective facts and broader contexts.

Investment in human resources is required to address the sources of poverty and the societal requirements for wealth creation, with emphasis on education and jobs.

      (2) With the recent antics of the PL (aided by those censured by the PN because of their votes for the opposition), the loss of Richard Cachia Caruana as EU Ambassador potentially could cost Malta hundreds of billions of euros over the period 2013-2020.

For this reason, because of the PL’s actions, long-term poverty may be increased in Malta despite the PL’s contrary rhetoric regarding poverty abatement.

PN policies since 1987 have been the political engine to lead Malta away from or out of poverty. There is no rational basis to project a societal renaissance from a PL government.

      • John Schembri says:

Hint to Mr Clemmer: make a copy of what you write ,’censure’ anything which ‘might’ be offensive and re-post it later, it works.

      Lola,
Problema ta’ Franco hi li jisthajjel li kollox personali, bhallikieku haddiehor ma’ stenniex aktar minnu sakemm wasal, jew hu biss thabat.

Int tahseb li din l-ewwel darba li xi hadd hassu nieqes fil-partit? Hekk jonqos issa, kull min irid igerger jaqla’ frattarija.
      Il-partit irawwem, il-partit inaqqi.

Lanqas biss induna b’liema zarbun irid jimxi. Ninu, Louis u Helen ma’ kienux tal-ftit. Haga kellhom, li hu qas jaf x’inhi, voglia li jservu fid-distretti bl-akbar umilta’. Dan hlief jibla’ u jahtaf ta’ haddiehor ma jridx, ghidli int ghalfejn iggieled ma’ kulhadd. Kazin lanqas b’nemes ma’ tarah u n-nies ilha li ombratu.

U mela x-xoqqa f’moxta, ahjar jara kif nefaq vot n-nies, ghax mhux diga’ iebsa hemm isfel. Ghalfejn ghal dik l-hnizrija li jridu jaghmlu bil-faham ma’ jghid xejn? In-nies qed jigiha hsieb hazin.

  13. Ishmael Dalli says:

What a cheek! All three of them. They embarassed the party thanks to whom they owe their parliamentary seat.

Then they pretend that the same party cannot cirticise their actions. So much to their postering on demcracy.

  14. C Falzon says:

Imma veru miskin jahasra, his harsh condemnation by the PN is tantamount to being savaged by a dead sheep.

  15. ciccio says:

To me, Franco Debono is more like the lost sheep in the parable.

The Good Shepherd must leave the flock of other sheep unattended to seek to recover the lost one, which has strayed and behaved capriciously and sinfully.

He is also like the Prodigal Son in the other parable.

Repent, Franco, repent. For the elections are near.

  17. Taks Fors says:

    • Angus Black says:

Puluzija wara l-bieb ma jkollux, il-Lejber ikun fil-gvern u allura hadd min taghhom ma sa jazzarda jaghmillu xi vendikazjoni ghax paxxihom sa l-ahhar. Forsi jibza min xi Nazzjonalist?

Ahna mhux ‘ta qattani’ u l-akbar azzjoni li nistghu naghmlulu hi li ma nhalluhx johrog taht bandiera Nazzjonalista.

  18. ciccio says:

Daphne this merits a separate post with your impeccable analysis.

“Cyprus to ask for bailout from eurozone partners”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18586532

    “Cyprus’s main problems:
    – Banks: Cypriot banks’ exposure to Greece totals 29bn euros, or 160% of GDP, including both Greek government bonds and loans to Greek residents.
    – Recession: Economy expected to shrink 1.2% this year (IMF).
    – Deficit: 2011 deficit 6.3% of GDP – one of the highest in the eurozone.
    – Highest public sector wage bill in eurozone (as a percentage of GDP”

    – The BBC.

And now for Joseph Muscat’s foresight and ECONOMIC CREDENTIALS.

    http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/en/newsdetails/news/national/Budget-2011-Muscat-hits-out-at-Gonzi-s-financial-management-credentials

““This means that underneath Gonzi’s leadership, while the Maltese economy fell back, the Cypriot economy, irrespective of the international financial crisis, sped on ahead,” Joseph Muscat said.

Muscat augured that Gonzi would now claim that the international crisis did not hit Cyprus.

“Beyond the recession, there is something fundamentally wrong in how Gonzi leads the economy – and the signs where there from before the election,” Muscat maintained.”

    Come again, Dr. Muscat?

    • kev says:
