Malta Today – so VERY transparent

Published: July 23, 2012 at 9:14am

Malta Today reports just now, in its top item, that the Nationalist Party has been “cautioned” by the Data Protection Commission:

PN cautioned for breaching privacy rules

Political parties cannot send emails containing a political message unless they have prior consent.

Curiously, it fails to report that the Partit Bla Isem has been reprimanded more severely and threatened with fines. There is no way on earth that Malta Today cannot have known about this, or found out.

I have a private email address which I only use with a couple of friends, and I still got added to the PL mailing list.

It’s not put online, it’s not on any other mailing list, it’s only registered with GO to receive notifications about their services.

I did not receive a ‘notification’ when being added to their list and I tried unsubscribing multiple times, but it did not work either.

My work email also gets spammed by the PL…. and Maltatoday comes crying wolf.

[Daphne – Malta Today is an abuser itself. It spams me with unsolicited messages and I can’t unsubscribe.]

    • FP says:

Not only is spamming illegal, but also failing to provide an “easy and simple” facility to unsubscribe “on the occasion of each message where the customer has not initially refused such use” of their electronic contact details.

      ( Legal Notice 16/2003, clause 9 (2) )

I get worse. My work email address gets constant emails from PN and Simon Busuttil.

I have no interest in reading these of course, I never consented to this, and its an abuse to inundate my work email station with rubbish.

  2. La Redoute says:

Anyone receiving unsolicited email should report the sender to the Data Protection Commission:

    Background information: http://idpc.gov.mt/article.aspx?art=154

    Complaint form:
    http://idpc.gov.mt/public/complaint_frm.aspx?mode=new

    • Angus Black says:

Yes, complete the form and flood the Commissioner for Data Protection targeting the offenders including Malta Today.

  3. Pink says:

I receive SMSs from Chris Cardona. Go told me that they did not give him my number so I had to contact him to remove me from his list. He said he did, but I still receive these SMSs.

I don’t want to know where Joseph will be next Sunday and I definitely don’t want to go to any coffee mornings organised by them.

This is a breach of privacy. How did he find out that I am in his district?

This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black!

    • el bandido guapo says:

Same here, bloody spammer. Sent in the name of a “Mario” but with no sender’s phone number showing.

My ID card was until very very recently showing an address within Chris Cardona’s constituency.

Used to get these from Joe Mizzi. Curiously, when my billing address was then in HIS constituency, since updated.

There is little doubt that either at Vodafone or Go someone is leaking subscriber details.

Write to the MCA about this. Protest to your mobile phone provider that you do not want to receive bulk sms, when the sender’s mobile number is not accessible, ie the service of bulk sending is organised by one or other service provider.

  4. Crockett says:

    Daphne,

You may unsubscribe from Maltatoday by phoning them. A waste of time perhaps, but that’s what I was forced to do since the online unsubscribing service on their website failed to work and remove my phone number.

  5. Uncertain Werner says:

Even if Malta Today didn’t know – they should have had the journalistic nous to check whether the PL was also an offender.

  6. Rob79 says:

Everyone is apparently tired of PN! Apart for a few who benefit in one way or another from them; a circle becoming smaller and smaller…
