They’re going to be charged with murder, after all
timesofmalta.com reports this afternoon that prosecutors have decided to charge two soldiers with murder after all, rather than manslaughter. No Detention Service officers will be charged, as reported yesterday, but only three soldiers.
Three in court this evening over migrant’s killing
Three AFM soldiers are due to be taken to court this evening to face charges in connection with the killing of Malian immigrant Manade Kamara in a Detention Service van early yesterday.
Informed sources said a sergeant and a bombardier are expected to face murder charges while the third soldier will face charges of perverting the course of justice.
Prosecutors debated for most of the day today whether the two should be accused of murder (which signifies intent) or the lesser charge of manslaughter.
The migrant died while being taken to Paola health centre at around midnight on Saturday morning.
A post mortem confirmed that Mr Kamara had sustained multiple blows to the groin and lower back.

why charge them with murder they should be given the gieh ir republica medel for serving malta and the maltese they were attacked and they defended themselves
Isthi……
The one characteristic all racists have in common – including those who wear suits and pretend-blue ties – is limited intellectual ability. The other is their inability to spell or use proper syntax.
Surely you cannot be serious? Serving Malta? And one man, handcuffed, vs five – probably armed, well-fed and physically fit men?
It is true that Malta cannot sustain the continuous influx of immigrants, but I would rather have that “inconvenience” than have their death (whether it is due to such a horrific incident or because of their drowning on their way to the unknown) on my conscience.
Unfortunately, there are far too many people who think the way you do.
Defended themselves from a handcuffed person locked inside a van? What a bloody racist idiot.
Innocent until proven guilty. Let’s not create media witch hunts and take sides before a sentence is handed.
So now it’s the media who will be judging these soilders.
Shouldn’t we first hear what everyone of them has to say?
Perhaps they were just defending themselves, who knows.
Will we be turning this in a political issue as well?
Both the P.M. and Joseph Muscat should have kept out of it, if we don’t want this to turn into a Kangaroo trial.
If we don’t want these things to happen we should stop accepting these people in Malta.
[Daphne – Silvio, you’re still supporting the Nationalist Party of the 1930s.]
No Daphne, as a matter of fact I am an ex-Nationalist.
The party ceased to exist when it was taken over by Gonzi and his clique.
[Daphne – Gonzi’s policies are no different to Fenech Adami’s, Silvio. Political parties are not pop-bands. You don’t choose them on the basis of whether you fancy the leader singer.]
Defending themselves against a hancuffed man? Come off it.
Guess who the defence lawyer for one of the accused is:
“In submissions for bail, Dr Franco Debono representing Cuschieri said the charge of murder was excessive. He said one had to keep in mind the character of all involved. The accused were soldiers who had gone out to work. They were family men while the accused had escaped for three years and had clashes with other people in detention.”
