This was posted by David S in response to my bit about Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando Smith’s Facebook aside that George Borg Olivier lacked charisma.
I absolutely loved the last line.

“What (Borg Olivier) may have lacked in charisma…. ”
Aaarrrgh.
Perhaps JPO thinks Mintoff had charisma – dak il-pastazun bil-hdura kontra s-sinjur.
From one of Mintoff’s famous budget speeches:
“Ghaliex ix-xita tinzel mis-sema u mhux titla mill-art? Ghax inkellha tixxarrablek il-linfa “, ‘linfa’ being his word for what the British call ‘family jewels’.
George Borg Olivier was a unwavering in his beliefs, a true visionary, elegant and with impeccable manners. He was a true statesman, like whom Malta has had no other.
And he NEVER sat next to his driver.

Mela biex wasal biex qal hekk JPO – mela zgur li qatt ma kien Nazzjonalist ghax bhali li konna nafu lil Borg Olivier u n-nies anke avversarji tieghu kienu jqiesuh karizmatiku per eccelenza u li kien jistma lil kullhadd indaqs u dejjem kont tarah bi’ tbissima.
Jiddispjaccini Jeffrey li qed twegga sentimenti tan-Nazzjonalisti genwini li dejjem hdiemna ghal pajjiz u ghal partit u qatt ghal interessi personali.
Actually Eddie Fenech Adami was more or less of the same calibre as Borg Olivier, even though he came close to being dragged down to the same level as the rest of the country. As for Gonzi…
Dr Gonzi has up to now outshone both leaders mentioned – since none of the previous leaders had to deal with the sort of world economic collapse and it seems that the worst is still to come. So indeed Dr Gonzi is by far a true visionary, a statesman and a very safe pair of hands.
No he isn’t. He is uninspiring, not particularly quick-witted, limited in culture, populist, obstinate on trivialities but willing to retreat on strategy, and given to cronyism. A good administrator at best, but certainly not a statesman.
The trouble is he was the best choice for PM at the time, which says a lot about the quality of our politicians. That’s democracy, where moronic yobs elect moronic yobs.
well said
Baxxter, I understand you don’t have access to the man.
‘Not particularly quick-witted’ is a totally inaccurate description of Dr Gonzi.
On the contrary, his wit can sometimes be perceived as caustic, rather in the tradition of George Borg Olivier, and maybe a reminder of their Valletta roots.
All three had their achievements. Gonzi has had more of a CEO role, mirroring the changes in Western democracies over the last 20 years.
As a campaigner, he was brilliant last time round. This time round, we need to see the outcome before we judge.
Finally I find myself in agreement with Baxxter. One wonders why Baxxter hasn’t yet realised that times have changed to such an extent that it makes little difference who leads this minuscule EU province.
It DOES make a difference at some localised level, but that’s not where the most deterministic political, monetary, even economic, decisions are made. In the scheme of things that matter, the tribal red-blue contest is no more a determinant of our future than a feud between two parochial band clubs.
Does JPO know what charisma is?
He must think that it is something to be found at the bottom of an Earl Grey tea mug.
The term charisma has two senses: 1) compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others, and 2) a divinely conferred power or talent.
JPO lacks both sorts.
And he is beginning to show the strong influence of his family’s Labour roots.
…because sitting next to one’s driver is an insult to statesmanship.
It is not an insult. Let’s just say it is just not done.
What, for Christ’s sake, does JPO know about Gorg Borg Olivier.
Next to nothing. Just hearsay, maybe.
After all he is only a Johnny-come-lately.
JPO – an even more dangerous version of Franco Debono.
Great man.
