Imagine that: told to resign by Barroso, he responded ‘No, I don’t think so’

Published: October 21, 2012 at 3:11pm

Just look at the spectacle of Malta Today editor, Matthew Vella, completely castrated:

John Dalli: “Barroso showed me the OLAF report and read out the covering letter, then said ‘On this basis you have to resign.’ I told him that in my opinion, these are not grounds for resignation.”

UNBELIEVABLE.

John Dalli: “Barroso made an appointment with me.”

No, you crass person: your president summoned you or asked to see you. There’s a big difference. I’ll put it down to insufficient knowledge of English idiom, and give you the benefit of the doubt. But honestly.

John Dalli: “I expected Barroso to support me in the collegial nature of the Commission….I asked for 24 hours to adjust and seek legal advice, and Barroso told me, No, I’ll give you 30 minutes.”

Where did Dalli think he was – Malta or Tripoli?

I almost despair.

Yes, Vella’s quintessentially metrosexual gone bad.

    ‘Slijma distrrikt’, enough said.

  2. canon says:

No wonder Barroso effectively kicked John Dalli out.

    • La Redoute says:

Dalli is so ignorant of correct procedure that he thinks his being asked to resign disgraces Barroso rather than Dalli himself.

      • La Redoute: ust keep in mind that the person you describe as ” ignorant of correct procedure ” was the star minister of PN governments for around 15 years !

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

That’s right. He was star minister because the alternative government was even worse. If MLP were up to scratch everyone would happily vote this sleazy lot out of power.

Issa qieghed jitkaza b’John Dalli, Eddy Privitera!

Nesa’ dan meta fit-tellieqa ghal-kap tal-PN kemm kienu imbuttawh biex isir hu kap tal-PN, halli kif jiehu ir-ridni tal-Partit jibdew jirrigettaw il-hdura kontra l-PN!.

Ma jafx dan li Muscat Labour Party kien diga’ kellu hemel filmati bil-kritika kontra Dalli ghal fuq Super One?

“Commission President Barroso attacked by Bout of Debonitis. Swiftly reacts by sending the offending Parasite to Hell.”

  4. Natalie Mallett says:

I like the bit where he admits that it is normal practice where “people meet people on a one to one basis” (6:15-6:30 appx.).

I am sure, and at a price too, by the looks of it. But although this may be acceptable in Malta, it is not acceptable in the EU. Il-garra gejja u sejra u fl-ahhar inkisret.

    Dear ex Commissioner Dalli,

Thank you for selling my reputation for Euro 150 (60M/400K).

I hope you get what you deserve – political harakiri. And now, begone!

You see Daphne, that’s how are things done in Malta… Anything goes in everything, whether in our parliament or in the streets of Ghaxaq.

    Foolishly, he never adjusted.

  7. Angus Black says:

Johnny doesn’t seem to be a very fast thinker.

Having been grilled twice by OLAF and Barroso asking for an ‘appointment’ should have raised a zillion red flags.

Being so congenial himself and a ‘colleague’ of Barroso, he should have told him, “Well Barro, I just happen to be a tad busy, but make it the next day or so at a more convenient time for me”.

That would have gained some more time for Dalli and, who knows, Barroso could have even changed his mind about letting him go.

In the meantime the last of the ‘snus’ at the Peppi’s Kiosk has just been snapped up by the local Swedes.

Is ‘snus’ legal in Malta and if not, is Mr Zammit under investigation?

The OLAF report deals with other issues but not illegal exportation and importation of a substance only authorized to be consumed in Sweden.

Another one in Maltese …. fl-aħħar sab kappell jiġih. Prosit Barroso.

  9. sasha says:

The one thing I’m not too convinced of and in no way am I accusing or siding with Dalli, but Olaf and EU Commission should publish both the Olaf report as well as the tobacco directive that was being pushed, all in the name of transparancy. There is much more than what meets the eye, lets not forget this is the tobacco industry which is very dirty.

  10. Kenneth Cassar says:

John Dalli’s reply to the question at 13:38 is the reply of a guilty man. Basically he’s saying he can’t say whether he wishes the Attorney General to prosecute until he knows what they know about him.
