In The Times today (from a report quoting a piece in The Lancet):
When asked about the safeguards that are in place to prevent any weakening of the Directive now that progress has stalled, Mr Dalli told The Lancet News podcast that “The safeguard was me.”

Dalli was wrong to say “The safeguard was me”, He should have said “The safeguard was I” – otherwise he was correct.
Barroso removed that safeguard and, as a direct result, the smooth progress of the Tobacco Directive has been most severely and most adversely “affected” when it was put on indefinite hold.
Those who have eyes to see, let them see that Swedish Match must be jumping for joy and passing round the champagne! The European Parliament and the medical profession are not so ecstasic. They are alarmed and asking questions.
