This man is shameless, isn’t he: he didn’t even tell the prime minister that he was under investigation

Published: October 21, 2012 at 3:22pm

Listen to this video carefully. Dalli says that on 11 July the men from OLAF went to his office and put him on formal notice that he was under investigation.

On 16 July he was formally interviewed by OLAF for the first time (assisted by, as OLAF put it, “a person of his choice”, for which read lawyer).

On 18 July, by means of a video-conferencing link from Brussels, he was his friend Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s only witness in his case for the expulsion of Richard Cachia Caruana from the Nationalist Party.

On 20 July, he was in Malta on an official visit to the abattoir in his role as EU Commissioner. Still in that role, he made a scene with the press about how his emails were hacked and how he would go to the police and the prime minister. Later, he told the press that he had in fact gone to the police with that complaint (a lie, as it turned out) and that he had also informed the prime minister.

In this interview with his friends at Malta Today, he is asked specifically whether he told the prime minister that he was under investigation, which he should obviously have done. It was a grave dereliction not to do so, hence the prime minister’s shock when faced with his resignation, which seemed to come of the blue.

Now, once more, the devil is in the detail. I’m going to spell it out in capital letters. ON 20 JULY, JOHN DALLI TOLD THE PRIME MINISTER THAT HE THOUGHT HIS EMAIL ACCOUNT HAD BEEN HACKED, BUT HE CONVENIENTLY OMITTED TO TELL THE PRIME MINISTER THAT HE WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY OLAF AND THAT ONLY FOUR DAYS EARLIER HE HAD BEEN INTERROGATED WHILE ASSISTED BY A PERSON OF HIS CHOICE.

This man should have been spat out and stamped upon a long, long time ago. And the Labour Party should understand that untrustworthy person is an untrustworthy person wherever and in whichever context he might happen to operate.

And that is quite apart from his utter and absolute shamelessness in colluding with that other disgraceful man, Jeffrey Pullicino, to try to secure the expulsion of Richard Cachia Caruana from the Nationalist Party, when he himself was facing expulsion from the European Commission but conveniently keeping this secret even from the very person who made the daft and irresponsible decision to nominate him in the first place.

Can one confirm this with Prime Minister. Who can ring him?

    [Daphne – Confirm what?]

    • X’kien HADD mill-apologisti ta’ GonziPN ma semma l-fatt li s’issa silvio Zammit ghadu ma tkecciex mill partit ? Dan wara kollox kien ghad kellu kariga ta’ vici-sindku ta’ GonziPN. John Dalli ma kellu ebda kariga fil-partit.

  2. canon says:

Confirm that Dalli didn’t have the decency to inform him and how he feels about it.

[Daphne – We don’t need to do that. John Dalli himself says that he didn’t inform him, in this video interview here. Why would he lie about that? Just for the heck of it? Yes, though, I think somebody should ask the prime minister how he feels about it.]

    • Jozef says:

Pretty much in Franco’s style if that were the case.

    • Macduff says:

The Prime Minister must have known about it. It’s impossible that he met Barroso on so many summits and not getting wind of it.

Either that, or else the Prime Minister is in cloud cuckoo-land.

  3. Thaddeus says:

The disgrace he has brought upon Malta is unbelievable! Someone has even added a section called John Dalli on the Snus Wikipedia page.

  4. dudu says:

And, as you rightly said in your column in The Malta Independent on Sunday, today, he should have resigned as soon as he was notified that he was under investigation and not upon its completion.

  5. George Grech says:

“And by the way dear Prime Minister, it’s only 60 million euros we asked for.”

Issa qed jerga’ jghid ukoll li ma jeskludix li jerga’ jikkontesta l-elezzjoni. Nispera li jigi mkecci mil-PN illejla qabel ghada jekk il-partit ma jridx ikompli jitlef il-voti.

Ghall-hafna partitarji tal-PN John Dalli huwa persona non grata bhal shabu l-ohra li jqerru ghandu.

August 2010 – Meeting with Silvio Zammit a and person from tobacco Lobby

January 6 2012 – Meeting with Silvio Zammit and lawyer re snus

August 2012 – Dalli writes to Silvio Zammit warning him in a judicial letter that he would hold him responsible if he harmed his (Dalli’s) reputation.

John Dalli speaking to TVHemm on Tuesday: (October 2012)

    • “I categorically deny I knew what was happening. I absolutely deny I in any way knew of negotiations going on between a Maltese person and tobacco people…

So once Dalli knew nothing, what did he warn Silvio Zammit about on August 2012? I’m losing the plot.

I do hope he gets NONE of the ex-Commissioner benefits (pension…) afforded by Brussels.

    Daphne,

Ever asked yourself how Barroso spent his Sunday afternoons?

    Well, reading Franco’s blog, ovvja.

http://www.francodebono.com: 15 separate posts about Tonio Borg so far, all of them numbered for easy reference.

Tonio Borg (15) : Is it true he had to ask RCC to become Foreign Affairs Minister?

At least two Nationalist members of parliament have told me in the past years that Tonio Borg had to ask Richard Cachia Caruana to become Foreign Minister.

Richard Cacdiua Caruana has been and am not sure wheter he still is an advisor to Lawrence Gonzi.

I do not know wheter this information is true or not, but a denial or confirmation would be very appropriate since President Barroso might be following.

This blog has a number of followers from Belgium.

    • natalie mallett says:

Why bother to read Franco Debono’ s blog. I gave up on him and the fewer people give him attention the sooner he shuts up.

      • Gahan says:

Why bother about Franco? If he votes for the budget he will survive till the election, if he votes against the budget he will be forgotten earlier and Gonzi will gain more sympathy than he’s already gained because of Dalli.

To say the truth I prefer that the country will have a budget to work on.

Pity that we have some spoilt brats for MPs.

Right, now that we’ve established that John Dalli is a complete rogue and sleazeball, here’s some musical entertainment on the subject of shamelessness and the quest for pleasure. Straight from Sweden.

If my deductions are right, this should be right up Ciccio’s alley:

  11. RJC says:

So Dalli sends a judicial letter to Silvio but doesn’t mention anything to the prime minister.

    What a comedian.

    • Grezz says:

And that when Silvio tal-imqaret is a PN member of the Sliema Local Council. If it was true that this Silvio was doing something that could tarnish Dalli’s reputation (ahem)’ then it would have been in Dalli’s interest to report him to the party they both represented.

    • Ken il malti says:

Why air your dirty laundry with the boss that gave you that plum job in the first place.

Johnny Chewbaca was arrogant enough to think this whole affair will blow over and few people will be wise to it.

The guy is in Brussels hobnobbing with the high and mighty but his mentality is that of a petty wheeler- dealer from Hal Qormi.

  12. Max says:

That is why John Dalli made all that scene at the abattoir – email hacking….police reports….it seems that it was all bla bla bla bla.

    Very sad.

  13. anthony says:

I would be very surprised if Barroso did not inform the PM that his nominee was under investigation.

He would have done this straightaway.

Even RCC would have been made privy to this information. His subsequent line of action can explain Dalli’s support for JPO.

I do not expect Gonzi to elaborate on this either.

There is an ethic even in the dirty world of international politics.

  14. Adrian says:

Have to write it in Maltese …. bla żejt f’wiċċu allavolja jagħmilha ma’ tal-imqaret li jkunu mimlija żejt.

  15. Claude Sciberras says:

Apart from it being Dalli’s duty to inform the Prime Minister, shouldn’t Barroso and Gonzi have been informed by OLAF that one of their own is being investigated? No wonder PM was surprised.

But we do not want to hear these answers because these answers have nothing to do with the ALLEGED bribe.
