What did I tell you about Franco being 100% Mintoffian?

Like his recently deceased spirit guide, he’s gunning to ruin Christmas.

Mintoff hated Christmas – a fact not mentioned in any of the soft-soaping bios published over the last few weeks – and chose November and December to pick some of his nastiest battles.

Bad Santa, one of my favourite films.

During Mintoff’s era the budget used to be discussed around Christmas time and the Valletta Labour Club used to put up loudspeakers for the budget discussion to be heard by all entering Valletta to do the limited shopping on offer.

I can still hear the echo of Mintoff calling a member of the opposition ‘ahdar, ahdar’ as if it is being said today. That was the Christmas spirit during Mintoff’s time.

True, at the time, Christmas was ever so boring. I started celebrating Christmas after 1991.

Back in the 80s, Mum and Dad always worried themselves sick about our future.

Now I worry about my kids.
