Yet another Freudian slip: calling Reno Bugeja “Silvio”
While speaking to the press a few days ago, John Dalli said that a great deal of damage is being done to his family’s “psycho”.
Last night on TVM, while he was Reno Bugeja’s guest on Dissett (with Reno Bugeja failing to reach his usually incisive standards and allowing Dalli to run riot instead), he let slip another.
While in full flood, and so convinced of his own correct behaviour that he almost managed to sound convincing to others, Dalli got completely carried away and ended up calling his interviewer “Silvio”, prompting Bugeja to respond:
“Jiena Reno u mhux Silvio.”
Dalli also gave away the extent of his closeness to Silvio Zammit by referring to him throughout the interview as “Silvio”, not as “Is-Sur Zammit”, or “Zammit” or even “Silvio Zammit”.
And more crucially, he didn’t have a single bad word to say about him, when this is the man who is purportedly the root cause of the problem.
John Dalli’s refusal to slam Zammit publicly is the single biggest indicator of his embroilment with him.

Definition of an innocuous meeting.
January 6
The Maltese lawyer representing Swedish Match in Malta reported she had met John Dalli and Silvio Zammit on this day.
She pitched the scientific, legal and tax benefit underpinning the company’s argument that the EU’s snus ban was unjustified and unfair. She said Mr Dalli mentioned he was willing to take unpopular decisions, as long as science supported them.
He was also receptive to receiving more information, especially, independent World Health Organisation science.
Mr Zammit was there too but the company says “it is not clear who invited him”. Neither the company nor ESTOC (European Smokeless Tobacco Council) paid him for the meeting
(The Sunday Times)
So she knew a thing or two about snus.
January 6 is a particular date. It is within that period of annual holidays, and, in the case of an EU Commissioner’s diary, it is likely that it will only be given up for important and urgent business, and not for a meeting with a “young female lawyer” who only had some questions to ask about the situation of snus in Europe, about 2 months before the EU Directive on tobacco was concluded.
Dalli said that he hadn’t informed the Prime Minister about the OALAF investigation because it was confidential.
At the begining of the interview he referred to Silvio Zammit as “dak’. When a person refers does not refer to another person by his name but uses words like she, he, that or in this case “dak” he is trying to distact himself from that person and the things they did together. a case in point to mention is bill clinton when he said infront of interviewers “i did not sleep with that women”
[Daphne – He referred to him as ‘dak’ just once, and then spent the rest of the interview calling him Silvio, and even doing the same with Reno Bugeja. The ‘dak’ was a ploy. That’s why it came at the beginning.]

I did have doubts on the OLAF report and previously commented of such. In these past few days, I had expected John Dalli to openly condemn and sue Silvio Zammit for tarnishing the ex commissioner’s reputation and embroiling him in this humiliation.
However it certainly now seems that Silvio Zammit is just an accomplice to the scandal.
I eat my humble pie.
Am I right to say that in August he had his lawyer write to Silvio Zammit threatening to hold him responsible for any damage to his (Dalli’s) reputation – and now that his reputation has been seriously damaged, and he himself claimed that this incident will damage him, his future, and that of his family (ignoring what it has done to the country) – he has failed to take any steps against ‘Silvio’?
Berlusconism on the rise in Malta;
Deny allegations, denigrate individuals and demonise institutions and accountability to law.
Blame others for political failures and use the media, indeed buy it, to spearhead your interests.
Create a system whence a scandal is countered every other week to distract from the real issues.
Buy votes in parliament, buy MP’s, to set your agenda, everytime.
Build a network unofficially represented in parliament, create a ‘party’ revolving esxclusively around the leader.
Minor problem with the Maltese version, it doesn’t look like we’re going to get any kinky stuff.
Eddy Privitera is right and has been right all the time. If Mr Privitera’s brilliant foresight has been followed, we would not have been in this mess; by now we would have developed into a fully-fledged Svizzera fil-Mediterran rather than having OLAF, Kessler, Schembri, etc meddling in our internal affairs.
Mr Privitera, please forgive our stupidity.
Il-bierah Dalli kien qisu Emilio Fede. ‘Silvio’ tiela u ‘Silvio’ niezel.
Tajba din Ciccio! Grazzi
He mentioned that human rights court in Luxembourg again. Reno Bugeja either didn’t notice or was just too kind to point it out.
The survey on Malta Today is similar to the survey that was carried out in The Sunday Times 2 weeks ago.
Things are looking bad for the PN.
However, there is one difference: the Trust Barometer results. In The Sunday Times the result was – Gonzi 30% and Muscat 31% and in the Malta Today Gonzi 30% and Muscat 45%.
It is too high a percentage for a survey.
