Why hadn’t the press picked this up?

The sight of the President of the Republic’s son gassing away on the Labour stage, above the giant words JOSEPHMUSCAT.COM (repeated at least three times across the bottom) reminded me of something I noticed during the time over the festivities when I wasn’t writing this blog.

The Community Chest Fund (run by the President) used the Labour Party’s billboards to carry a message of thanks to those who donated to and helped with the fund-raising marathon L-Istrina.

Did they pay for them – Community Chest Fund charity money going to the Labour Party – or were they loaned for free by Labour?

The first is shocking; the second terribly inappropriate.

    Firstly, where’s the substance?

Secondly, loaned is a term being used out of context.

  2. cintura says:

Daphne asked a simple and valid question. The people expect a simple answer.

  3. Ringo says:

Both the PN and the PL agreed together that 2 weeks before christmas they will freely give some of their billboards to L istrina campaign.

  4. Tumas-Muscat says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if any of the two were the case.

The President or prominent members of his office have already demonstrated their unfortunate knack for corruptive practices in the case involving the President’s former head of secretariat. To top things off, he was protected by his position, as, despite the head of secretariat being cleared of charges brought against him, the President could not have his image tarnished or impeached.

So I’m really not surprised by this, if any of it were confirmed.

what press ? is there any press ?

Thought you were going to enlighten us on the kickbacks, the deep rooted corruption in this country and stuff of the sort. You know, with your international network of spies and all, would have thought you’d let us have a glimpse into this.

Or do you need to confer to get the official party line and drive that home by repeating it ad nauseam till you start believing it yourself too?

[Daphne – I lived and worked under the most corrupt government in the history of Malta, Mandango, in one of the most corrupt countries in Europe – oh sorry, not actually in Europe, but part of Libya. My definition of corruption and bribery might therefore be a little different to yours, but you can always confer with Karmenu Vella. I believe he’s still in the running, incipient dementia and all.]

    • Albert Farrugia says:

Something like 10,000 euros a day? What does the international network of spies have to say about that? Or is this network only engaged in Primark stores?

[Daphne – What 10,000 euros a day, Albert?]

Corruption is always corrupition, be it under P.N. or PL.
unless of course you agree with what an Italian lawyer once told me.
“”When bribery or something similar, is done by somebody else, that’s corruption, when you do it, that’s business”
If as you assume that some Labour ministers were corrupt, than there is nothing wrong for P.N.to be so,I think you are very wrong and you don’t really mean it.
I suggest we adopt the Chinese way and put all ministers guilty of corruption UP AGAINST THE WALL.

  7. Vincent says:

A note on the billboard at Portes des Bombes indicated that the advertising space was “donated” to the CCF by the LP.

    • mandango70 says:

There you have it Daphne. And no, I don’t think its terribly inappropriate, as much as I don’t think the donations to l’Istrina by the political parties were at all inappropriate.

    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130120/local/Would-a-Muscat-Cabinet-be-the-biggest-one-ever-.454048

This article is quite interesting. If Muscat is in power, this is the only way his Government will survive to keep the new and old guard happy. Otherwise it will be a Franco the whole term.

  9. Stephen Borg Fiteni says:

This reminds me of the Yana Mintoff scandal where she had MEPA approve her land for development when it clearly shouldn’t have been developed.

I do not recall this being reported in the media. The media is either extremely incompetent, or something else is going on.

  10. billy goat says:

I had noticed the billboards even before l-iStrina. They were advertising the President’s charity run, with a sign saying that the space was given by the Labour Party.

I thought it was a tacky move by the office of the President, but while reading this post I started getting mixed thoughts.

  11. TROY says:

MALTA TAGHNA LKOLL, sur tifel tal-president.

  12. George says:

The President is in duty bound to explain. I donated my money to help the sick and the poor but absolutely not the PL.

The President is in duty bound also to apologise for his son’s unacceptable behaviour at yesterday’s Labour Party mass meeting and for the BIG LIE he said namely that the PN government ‘huwa partiggjan.”

The President himself knows that this is a false accusation and therefore should publicly denounce it. Were the PN government ‘partigjan’ he wouldn’t be holding the prestigious post of the President of the Republic of Malta.

  13. Riya says:
