Jose Herrera’s hopes for a ministry dashed by his sister’s machinations – Herrera refuses to shake Prime Minister’s hand at swearing-in

Let me through. I'm mad as hell.

Let me through. I’m mad as hell.

I’ve always said that (Magistrate) Consuelo Herrera is so concerned with being too clever by half that she ends up losing sight of the main objective, a state of affairs that isn’t helped by her low cunning, a poor substitute, in the long run, for real intelligence.

It was she who hit on the scheme of drawing Manuel Mallia into the Labour net, and who worked things out so that it would happen.

Yes, it helped change the face of Labour (not for the better, but plenty seem to like that sort of thing).

Yes, it helped draw in loads of votes for Labour.

But it was obvious from the outset, Consuelo, that in a fight to the death for the Justice Ministry, this new arrival would win hands down over your brother.

And it should have been obvious to you, as it was to me, that a human boa constrictor like Manuel Mallia, who has spent his entire working life dealing with the worst criminals imaginable and the dregs of society, would have learned a thing or two off them.

There is no way he would have agreed to stand for election on the Labour ticket without securing the promise of the Justice Ministry beforehand.

Your brother was stitched up from the start, Consuelo – and you’re inadvertently to blame.

Now Jose Herrera, after half a lifetime sitting around and waiting on the Opposition benches, has been pipped to the post by somebody who started his political life when he joined Labour a year or so ago.

Poor, poor Jose. Never mind – you can always form a support group with your sister’s friends Jeffrey, Jesmond and Robert Arrigo. And if you are feeling particularly charitable, you can allow Franco Debono to join you. But don’t forget the straitjacket.

Muscat left looking up at nowhere in particular. Visibly embarrassed.

      It makes sense now.

On TX four weeks ago, Herrera gave Mallia his back, when Mallia tried some form of interaction, he wouldn’t even acknowledge and kept looking at someone offscreen.

On Jackie Mercieca’s programme, Herrera was invited alone and the discussion centred around justice, home affairs and constitutional reform.

By putting the justice portfolio back under the Interior ministry makes evident how Joseph couldn’t consider the two portfolios separately, it means the problems with Herrera don’t start today.

Herrera’s already had to make way for Cardona during the deputy leadership race and look where that got Joseph.

Making Cardona a minister and reducing him to PS is asking for it.

Now, if Joseph makes the same deputy leader, Anglu, speaker of the house, I don’t want to be anywhere near Jose’.

Bend over, Jose, you lost. However, as they say in the justice system, don’t drop the soap.

In a “Who can get the angriest contest” who would you bet on to win?

    Evarist or Jose ?

Just a smoke screen! Please look clearly at the portfolios!

I watched a repeat of the ceremony on Super One.

Joseph was left looking at the damask on the wall and Varist immediately noticed and talked to Leo about it. Varist’s facial expression said it all.

The quick conversation must have gone something like…jien rajt sew….ma hadlux b’idejh lill-prim? ajma hej x’bicca din….

To add insult to injury they gave him culture and the arts. Miskin, it’s like making Bob Geldof Pope.

So Mawel Mallia’s Ministry for Internal Security now oversees Justice AND the Police.

Only a short while back, the Opposition led by Joseph Muscat had voted unanimously alongside PN Franco Debono in his parliamentary attack on then Home Affairs minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, precisely for having responsibility for those same two portfolios on the grounds of possible conflict of interest.

More than a U turn by Joseph Muscat now, that illustratesy the politically opportunistic stance adopted by PL in Opposition.

The first week in government and the cracks are already beginning to show?

Too many people have been promised too many things. Now is the time to collect.

    The cracks are showing already.

I hope Muscat has many sleepless nights worrying about potential backstabbers. He deserves every one of them.

Therefore by elimination and using the same equation: this will also leave lover-boy Musumeci out of a top chairmanship.

  13. Jonathan says:

Are you saying that a magistrate colluded with a criminal lawyer? That would never happen. No way Jose’.

  14. sarah says:

His face said it all yesterday. He looked like he wanted to kill someone during the swearing-in ceremony. He didn’t smile or look at Joseph once when all the others did.

[Daphne – Yes, I know. And after all the help his sister and Musumeci gave Joseph! What a shame. Now maybe they’ll make her a judge, or send her to the European Court of Human Rights.]

Kenneth Zammit Tabona will have to grovel to Jose Herrrera as PS for culture.

Just picture the scene at the first “Hyacinth Bucket” candle-light supper, Indian house-boys in attendance…oh joy.
