Look what’s just happened in Hungary. And then our own constitutional reform has been entrusted by the prime minister to a psycho.
The ruling party in Hungary has two-thirds of the seats in parliament, allowing it to change the Constitution without the consent of the Opposition.
And that is precisely what it has done, changing the Constitution in a way that has led to street protests and caused the EU to voice its concern.
This was the act of a democratically elected government, serving as a timely reminder to us here in Malta that democratically elected governments can act in undemocratic ways and that a sizeable majority in the House is not a free licence to trample on basic freedoms or to do as it pleases.
And what has our own prime minister gone and done? He has cynically, amorally, entrusted the review of the Maltese Constitution to a psycho – and what’s more, an incompetent psycho – using this important position as part of his reward system for those who damaged his political rivals in what he called ‘Labour’s positive campaign’.
Sick. THAT, my dear readers, is real corruption. THAT is true evil. And there you have your really evil clique. Evil is not immoral, but amoral.

I can almost hear Joseph Muscat utter the words “Jien nitnejjek mil-Kostituzzjoni.”
In every decision search for the intent.
I believe, Daphne, that what you are doing by illustrating with examples will help people understand better and faster.
Sometimes it is difficult to understand that a person to whom one has given one’s vote has always had the intention of doing something other than what he promised.
It is not a strange coincidence.
It is no longer a one-off.
It is not a case of: wait and see let him prove himself.
It is a case of: the stripping of our democracy is happening before our eyes.
How tolerant are we going to be about it?
All of you who switched and regret it, don’t bother feeling ashamed.
There’s no time for remorse. Go to the next step.
Just go back in your heads and hearts to what you know is morally right.
At this point already, there’s no time and place for dithering in standing up to wrong-doing.
Do it for yourself first, even if you’re not ready to discuss it.
Other like-minded people will soon become more evident.
Does that unsustainable 10% gas price reduction remind me of something?
Frankie Tabone has taken a very risky role as Law Commissioner and as coordinator of the Constitutional review.
Labour will first adopt a number of undemocratic changes to laws and the constitution that it desires and which it probably has planned already, and which will undermine our civil liberties, and then it will be able to blame Frankie Tabone for those changes.
Frankie Tabone will then be remembered in the history books as the person in charge when those undemocratic reforms took place.

I like Debono …James Debono!

I think the criticism of the new Hungarian constitution is ridiculous. It is a democratic constitution. It proclaims the freedom of religion, and lowers the retirement age of judges to that of the rest of the population among others. It protects the life of the foetus. It condemns eugenics and human cloning. What is wrong with this constitution? Rather Hungary should be praised for having a pro-life constitution.
A study on the new constitution can be found here http://eclj.org/pdf/eclj_memorendum-hungarian-constitution_20110519.pdf
Besides democracy means government by the majority. If any government wants to change a constitution and has a two-thirds majority, it has the right and duty to do so.
One must recall that Malta and Hungary are members of the European Convention on Human Rights and subject to its court.
Hungary is looking more like Belarus rather than an EU state. If we are not careful enough that is what will happen to Malta
